Queen Nzinga - The Double Queen - Part 2 - Extra History

📜 Queen Nzinga: The Double Queen - Nzinga was briefly, temporarily supplanted by Ngola Hari who had been installed by the Portuguese, but she was determined to let nothing get in the way of keeping West Africa safe from colonial powers. To achieve this end, she would go on to form--and break, as she pleased--alliances with the Dutch, the Imbangala, and even the Catholic Church!

Queen Nzinga is a woman who, despite being one of the best- documented rulers in early modern Africa, still presents a puzzle. Her record, from ambitious noble, to guerrilla fighter, to consummate diplomat and religious reformer is still haunted by myths conjured up by her enemies--and a few constructed by Nzinga herself. Catch our Lies episode next week for behind-the-scenes on our research for the Siege of Vienna and Queen Nzinga series! bit.ly/EHPatreon

If I could venture a guess, I would say she realized the only thing stronger than a powerful nation at the time, was the Catholic church. So she worked really hard to get on their good side and make them the ultimate allies for her people. It's really sad she had to sacrifice her beliefs and traditions for the safety of her people. But whatever it takes seemed like her motto.

The only fair assumption to do is that the only thing that could stop european influence was the adoption of christianism. Just see Ethiopia. You converted, the catholic priests would do everything to spare you. Changing the state's religion aren't always a bad thing. She knew Ndongo never would had military ways to face-off Portugal, but she knew that pleasing the Holy See would make all their guns ineffective. Also reminder that since a tender age she already converted herself, which means that she just made the interesting thing be useful. They became equal, not a vassal state. European powers started to deal with them, instead of going into war. This put Ndongo into a privileged position who ensured their freedom for years more.

Hmm, this is a very important and interesting individual presented by you in a very peculiar way. You chose to underline her wits, sneakiness and ability to undermine her enemies even when faced with defeat but the same arguments could be made that she just gave up and fully aligned herself with colonial interests. I mean, taken at face value her actions after the peace with Portugal are not very flattering or suggestive of hidden desires for continued resistance: she adopted European fashion and standards, she converted to Catholicism and seemed an earnest believer (more so than most European monarchs during her time) as well as spreading these things to her people. Not to mention that she used the conflict resolution with Portugal to undermine her political enemies switching from anti-colonial fighter to monarch fighting for continued control of the throne surprisingly fast. All I'm saying is that your version has some rose-colored glasses that should not be there
