Queen Elizabeth II's Final Resting Place - The Memorial Chapel of King George VI

#queenfuneral #royaltomb #kinggeorgevi #memorialchapel #windsor #windsorcastle #stgeorgeschapel #royalvault #royalfuneral #queenelizabethcoffin #queenelizabethiifuneral #queenelizabethfuneral
In this video, I explore with you the last resting place of Queen Elizabeth II, the chapel she built in memory of her father king George VI. The Queen lies with Prince Philip and her parents in a vault beneath the chapel, which is a striking piece of 1960s modernist architecture with more than a nod to history and continuity and designed by architect George Pace of York. The process of designing and constructing this chapel took seven years, the work being completed in 1969. King George was buried there that year, with Queen Elizabeth his wife and Princess Margaret his daughter joining him in 2002 and Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 2022.

I personally like the coffin shape rather than the casket we use in America. I cried when Elizabeth II passed, like I did when my mum passed. I loved her not as my sovereign but as a mum, granny and great grandmother. Rest In Peace ma’am with your Prince, you deserve the rest.

As an American with ancestry in the countries in the UK …. I have always loved the Royal Family … it was heartbreaking when Prince Phillip passed away and the funeral, seeing the Wonderful Queen sitting alone looking totally lost . Then when Queen Elizabeth started fading in health and those two misfits caused so much pain ……It crushed my heart , I still miss seeing her smile , she became Queen the year I was born

Thank you for a very interesting podcast. I remember standing at the grave of King George VI, who was my King from 1946 to 1952. Sadly, we left home in 1961, and as a young lad, I never got the opportunity to visit the King's resting place. In 1998, I visited for the first time 37 years, and paid my respects to my King at that time. Now the grave contains Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, Prince Phillip and her late Great Majesty; Queen Elizabeth II. R.I.P. from your Loyal Subject!

Such a thorough and respectful presentation, Allan. I particularly love the elegance and simplicity of the black stone with gold inlay/engraving. Thank you for a well-researched and presented video. As a funeral director I have a great interest in this topic and have visited St. Georges and Windsor as well as having spent time with people involved in previous Royal funerals. Unfortunately, there is a lot of other badly researched and incorrect content online since the Queens death. Well done, Allan.

@@allanbarton You are welcome. Further to a question below about sealing of the vault and coffin, embalming would be undertaken to sanitise the Queens body prior to the lead lining of the coffin being hermetically sealed thus eliminating any odour. I am from Australia and have carried lead lined coffins many times (albeit when I was younger) and I can assure you and your readers that they are extremely heavy!

Very beautifully done, both your video and the chapel itself - what a fitting place for our beloved monarch to rest. Prince Phillip was such a good patron to mid- to late-twentieth century designers of all sorts, so I can easily imagine how he played a big part in the process of designing this building.

We visited Windsor just this past May and I remember looking down into the King George memorial chapel area and walking all around the Church. Rest in Peace.

What a blessing it was to grow old with Queen Elizabeth. What it was to see the loving looks that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip gave each other for 70+ years. I see those same loving looks between William and Kate. Be faithful and be kind to each other. I have just realized something and that is that William and Kate are living a normal life with their children. I also saw those same qualities in Diana and her sons.

Thank you for the history of the previous kings--I have done my research too, because I thought it was really strange that some people wrote that the body of Prince Philip was added to the coffin/casket of EIIR! I found out the EIIR hired someone in the 1960's to design and build the grave. She used her own money to have it built. Princess Margaret knew about it, and that there was no room for her, that was why she asked to be cremated because she wanted to be buried with her father and there was no place for an additional coffin/casket. Her funeral was on the same date as her fathers, but of course 50 years later, 15 February 1952 and 15 February 2002. Her mother, the Queen Mother passed away on March 30th, 2002. It was a difficult time for Queen Elizabeth II, because it was also the Golden Jubilee of her reign. And she lost both her sister and her mother. There are 2 'racks' build there, one for King George VI and the Queen Mother, coffins, and another "rack" for Prince Philip and EIIR. So the coffins are stacked but not touching each other and then I think a place for Princess Margaret Rose Ashes. But her name was not inscribed on the black marble that covers the underground room. So the US Four plus Philip are together again.--I did not save all informations that I found, but they are all there online.

Thank you for your thoughtful and thorough explanation. Having visited St George's, I'd wondered how ledger stones related to vaults below, especially the one in the George VI chapel. Fascinating how beautifully the chapel was designed, contrasted with the (understandable) lack of tribute paid to Henry VIII by *his* heirs.

The moment when the Crown Jeweller removed the Crown, orb and sceptre from the Queen’s coffin, with the help of the Queen's Bargemaster and Serjeants-at-Arms, was sad and final. Thank you so much for this exemplary description of the King George VI Memorial Chapel. I was fascinated by the background you provided on the design process and the alternatives considered. I'd also like to thank you for correcting the many so-called 'expert' commentators, who repeatedly reported that the ledger stone was a replacement to that bearing only the names of King George VI and his queen consort; why on earth would a new stone be used when there was clearly space deliberately left on the original stone for the names of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip?

Very informative, thanks. It took me a while to figure out from other sources which is the north side. I find the small KG VI Memorial Chapel rather cramped visually in relation to the ledger stone (presumably it has to be big enough to allow the coffin to be lowered) and the ledger stone not being aligned with the table and candles causing asymmetry visually unsatisfactory. We don't know what the Queen wears and if there are items of jewellery buried alongside. I'd like to know more about the embalming process.

Thank you so much Allan. I came to Windsor once in May of 2001 before the passing of the beautiful Queen Mother, but sadly rushed by as I was on a tour and you know they never give you enough time. I had wondered if King Edward VII, Queen Alexandra and King George V & Queen Mary were buried within their marble cases (sorry don't remember what it's called) with their beautiful effigies on them or underneath somewhere. I am hoping you can tell us more about Prince Albert Victor and is he buried within his marble case as well? Can you also do a video on the Duchess of Kent's mausoleum and Princess Charlotte's beautiful marble effigy. So many questions. Thank you for all your videos, going through all of them.

I understand that in this case all of those people are buried within their tomb chests, but in general in Britain that is most unusual and they are buried below. I will keep going with the videos, such appreciation makes all the difference.

An excellent commentary. I was under the impression there was an entrance off the main royal vaullt where coffins could be moved to the memorial chapel. Given the weight and size of the triple coffins of both Philip and Elizabeth transfering the coffins via the ledger stone would seem very difficult/impossible .
