Who is Buried in the Royal Vault?

Please consider supporting me at / lindsayholiday
On September 19th, 2022 over 4 billion people watched as the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II was lowered into the royal vault at St. George’s chapel, Windsor Castle. The monarch who had reigned for 70 years thus became part of history. And she was in astonishing historic company. She joined 10 monarchs, 8 consorts and over 30 other members of the royal family dating as far back as the 1400s, who are also interred below St. George’s chapel, in the royal vault and in other crypts around the ancient building. Let’s explore the numerous burial vaults of Windsor, dig up the past and find out who else is spending eternity with the Queen.
Monarchs and Consorts:
King Henry VI
King Edward IV & Queen Elizabeth Woodville
King Henry VIII & Queen Jane Seymour
King George III
King George IV
King William IV & Queen Adelaide
King George V of Hanover
King Edward VII & Queen Alexandra of Denmark
King George V & Queen Mary of Teck
King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, The Queen Mother
Queen Elizabeth II & Prince Philip

Honestly Henry VIII being left forgotten and abandoned in Windsor while his unwanted daughters got the grand tombs was probably the best dose of karma that ever could have happened.

Margaret knew it was the only way to be placed with her dad, there was no room for her to have a proper coffin. Strangely, she remains in the vault, and has not been transfered to King George VI Memorial Chapel, despite KGVI, QE The Queen Mother, QEII and now Philip all lying there. They transferd Philip, why not Margaret?

I have to admit that I found the moment the Queen's coffin began its slow descent into the vault quite jarring. Just like that, she disappeared, never to be seen again by the public she served for longer than most of us have even been alive. The Hanoverians certainly suffered a lot of devastating losses of children in infancy and childhood. I can't help but feel for King William IV and his wife, who lost all of their children - his only legitimate ones - in their infancy, including Princess Elizabeth, whose effigy is on display in the halls of Windsor Castle. His younger brothers also lost several children in infancy. Horrible...

I'm going to give my vote to George V and Queen Mary for the nicest memorial tombs. They are tastefully done, the likenesses are good, and visitors hundreds of years from now can have no doubt about who they are or what they looked like during their reign. I do hope King Charles sees to it that a flattering but accurate statue of his mother's likeness is erected in some appropriate place to honor her memory.

The Tudor dynasty did not last long. It died when Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603. The Stuart's took over but they too also had problems with heirs for succession despite Queen Anne having 17 pregnancies and no living children to succeed. Then her sister Mary took the Throne together with her Dutch husband William of Orange. They too were childless and so ended the Stuart's. What to do now? Look for the nearest blood relative. The Elector of Hanover William was second cousin of Queen Anne and the one in invited to take the throne of Great Britain and Ireland. So began the Hanoverian dynasty. During the first World war King George V wanted to distance the royal family from its German roots and changed the name to Windsor.

Henry took the black marble sarcophagus from Cardinal Wolsey for himself. He never got to be interned in it. Admiral Lord Nelson is in it in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral in London. I would love to see a video about princess Charlotte. There's so much about her that we barely know and it's sad that she never got to see her mother when she got pregnant. I wonder if she was screaming for her mother when she was going through the grueling labor. I can't even imagine the terrible pain she went through only to lose this child that she'd so desperately wanted. And on top of that, she ended up bleeding out. I thought it was sweet that her husband, after he remarried, named one of his daughters after her.

Wow, wasn't aware of this Ethiopian prince. Shouldn't he be returned home to rest with his relatives? Or should he be left where he is, for history's sake? Also, the vaults could potentially be a good tourist attraction. Why don't they allow public viewing, at least periodically?

  • @TheMeloettaful

    @TheMeloettaful

    Жыл бұрын

I didn't know that as well 😮! It irks me he was buried outside 😤. Let alone was taken far away from his homeland. I wonder besides his parents if he had any other family left. But I guess not 😢. As for the vaults being tourist attractions I think that's an awesome idea 💡😀! It doesn't even have to be every day just periodically like you said. Probably the likely reason they don't do this is because it is supposed to be a final, peaceful, resting place. And it probably feels very disrespectful to them to open the vaults up as attractions 😅. No matter if doing so would no doubt bring in a lot of extra money 💰💰💰. But it doesn't hurt to dream though ☺.

So, I'm fairly certain I have ancestors/relatives buried in St. George's cathedral. My great aunt has been working on the family genealogy for over 30 years, and I remember her telling my earlier this year that he was someone who worked (maybe took care of?) the church, and lived there with his wife and child. They were found buried near Henry VI, I believe, during a renovation in the 19th century. I'll have to ask her about it again, she has all these documents.

It would make a wonderful movie for all British people, for our beloved queen to meet all of her descendents from her dad, grandfather, great grand mother to the time of King Alfred the great!!! I'm hoping they make a mini-series for all. It would be wonderful to see what all of the spirits would say to queen elizabeth; which all spirits would greet each other as in their life; aged at the time of when they ascending as kings and queens.

I've often wondered about the one child of Queen Anne's. All those children, all buried at the same place, except this one. It wasn't that they ran out of room, as this was not the last buried. Nor was it the first buried, the eldest, or the youngest. It did not die of plague or under unusual circumstances. I can find nothing out of the ordinary about this child that separates it from the others. Does anyone have any idea why this one child was singled out for a different burial place? I've queried several history groups but no one seems to know...

There’s no precedent for it, as it wasn’t a “proper” royal dukedom, like York, Cambridge, Sussex, etc. It was created *for* the former Edward VIII and Wallis. Technically, it could be bestowed again, but given how much the family have tried to distance themselves from the scandal around his abdication? It’s *very* unlikely.
