One piece is what got me into reading but I haven’t read a regular book in awhile, and now I discovered this channel through one piece and it’s revitalized my interest in reading more books, just thought that was pretty cool

100% agree about Piranesi, it sucked me into the world so fast that only after a few pages I knew it was gonna be something special. Also yes One Piece! I'm glad you're enjoying it, it really needs to be read paying close attention to detail and you're doing your experience justice by doing just that! The more you focus on it the more rewarding it gets.

As I read Piranesi, I would often imagine being in the enormous halls with the huge statues, even smelling the slightly fishy scent left over from flood events of earlier months. I really liked the book.

I never was able to finish Theft of Swords. OP came up sooner than I imagined. Haha, I'm here for it. Yes, you love One Piece. Understandable. Thank you. Have a great day. *softly* One of us. One of us.

As someone who is dyslexic and has adhd it's really hard to imagine being able to read all that much. Also thank you for reading One Piece it is one of the greatest stories ever made and as a fan I'm always happy for more people to talk to and hear their opinions on the wonderful story and world that Oda created.

I know Merphy has a video about reading with dyslexia, maybe check that out if you haven’t! I’m not dyslexic, but I do have ADD. For me audiobooks work, but ONLY if I have something to do while listening that’s the right balance of mindless but still reeling in my focus. For me that’s simple puzzle game apps.

i’ve been reading the lord of the rings since july and it’s definitely become a favourite of all time. i loved the films growing up, so reading the book has been an awesome and wholesome experience!

Oshi no ko, and fullmetal alchemist, but oshi no ko is still running but, its about kids(reincarnated ones but still) and the dark side off the idol and movi indiustrie with gripping thriller drama. Granted its weir but so good. And fun. And its an anime but seki no yori, based on a novel and its about kids growing up with all the shocking things they discover, but the characters and world are fascinating regardless. Also weird.

I was thinking about reading a natural history of dragons but hearing in the last vid that it doesn't have much dragons maybe not lol I was really hoping it was single person on a long journey and we'd follow her trying to examine dragons and the various dangers and strategies she took to try and get more info kind of like a behind the scenes of a nature documentary if anyone knows a book like that I'd love to hear about it

Natural History of the Dragons ive heard mixed reviews so far so this is definitely a refresher. Gonna check it out.

I really want to read Project Hail Mary now! That sounds so interesting. I like the amnesia trope a lot. My least favorite I've read recently is The Parting or In Places Hidden and my favorite is Last of the Breed

Hey, Merph, I don’t know if you’ve already read it (I thought so, but I couldn’t find any videos about it searching your channel), but from what you said about Piranesi, I think you’ll enjoy The Star-Touched Queen quite a bit. It’s very environmental, and there’s the same idea of being in a place with doors that you don’t know what’s inside and the feeling that anything can happen… idk, I think you’ll like it for that.

I kinda agree. Mistborn Era One's Ending was rough for me.

I loooooooved Bone Shard Daughter, too--can't wait for the next one! And Piranesi shot immediately to the top tier of my all-time favorite books.

You don't have to feel bad about not liking the pirate book, the author clearly didn't like it yet or else he would have published it. Honestly I think publishing an author's unfinished work after they die isn't a good thing to do unless they specify they want it done.

I agree, but I think it's very contextual. For example, we wouldn't have gotten to read Kafka if he had gotten his wish to burn his books after death. Edit: ignore this, I missed you specifying "unfinished."

Merphy it is nice to hear that you will continue with Sullivan’s books. I‘m not going to spoil it for you, but the books get better and better, there is actual meaningful development. It also needs to be said that Sullivan finished writing the hole series before even publishing the first one, there is a lot of well planned story in this. I would also agree that the very first book is the weakest, not bad but not amazing either. Looking forward to find out in a few years if Royce and Hadrian can find a similar spot in your heart as Locke and Jean.

I have been watching your channel to get some suggestions for books to read, but I haven't read very much thus far, and your shirt in this episode looks interesting and warm (compliments about the shirt)

i been reading mainly historicals, fiction and non-fiction. Fictional, just read the new release, Sharpe's Assassin by Bernard Cornwell, set in Paris immediately after Waterloo. Louis L'Amour's The Haunted Mesa, one of L'Amour's few forays into science fiction, a quest to find a friend in a parallel word, set in the then-actual day (published in 1987 but i suspect post 1970, man has landed on the moon, but an enemy agent from the parallel world doesn't believe it). On the Irrawaddy by G.A. Henty, 1896, set during the First Anglo-Burma War. The non-fiction, the Osprey Campaign 240: St. Clair's Defeat, the largely forgotten or ignored story of the Battle of Wabash, 1791, the greatest ever Native Indian victory over an American Army, three times the casualties than at the Little Big Horn. Currently reading Britain's War against the Slave Trade: The Operations of the Royal Navy's West Africa Squadron 1807 - 1867 by Anthony Sullivan (published 2020). I bet few of the black slavery apologists have ever read this, or ever heard of it.

So glad you're enjoying Malazan. I completely understand the whole 'not in the right headspace' situation.They are some heavy books. I think i took a... two month? break between 8 and 9 because I was feeling burnt out and now I'm reading 9 and tbh, it's not as bad as everyone says. Anyways, looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts on Malazan.

I gotta tell you, I haven't been a reader since high school and I wanted to pick it up again, a decade later. I wasn't finding anything I liked and was DNFing everything. Then I picked up Pet Sematary because of you and this is the first book I've picked up that I actually want to continue after the first day. I actually chose to read over going on my phone while I was waiting for my car to get an oil change and in my downtime at work. And I've been having a lot of fun jotting down little notes as I read, which I've never done before but I thought it'd be nice to write them down. So thanks Merphy, I've been getting discouraged lately because I haven't been liking anything that I've been reading, but I think this might've changed that :)

That dragon book sounded so cool... i'll probably still check it out but hearing that there aren't many dragons disappoints me :(

I know you said you don't watch a lot of tv...but because you love pirates so much, I can really recommend the show "Black Sails". I think you would enjoy it so much. It's just an incredible pirate story with brilliant and complex characters.

Since you like Marie Brennan's writing, you have GOT to read A Mask of Mirrors by Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms writing as M. A. Carrick. Very complex and very amazing!

My top favorite book this season was In The Wild Light by Jeff Zentner, just all the fall vibes!🍂 Least favorite was The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix, just not what I expected at all 😔

I'm actually somewhat interested in this since I enjoy writing female protags more. The hardest part for me starting out was thinking about what differences in dialect there might be. That and how girls treat other girls versus how guys treat other guys. Like I've heard that girls like to compliment each other more compared to guys who like to insult (in a teasing manner) more often. Things like that.

I absolutely enjoyed deadhouse gates so far it's my favorite book in the series 💝💖👍

Totally agree with you on The Maidens. Such a disappointment. And YES to Piranesi. Such a fantastic book. It's one of my new all time faves!

Regarding Michael Crichton, he is my second favorite author and I would say that after the novel 'Next', most of his work was either unfinished and co-written so it is not Crichton's usual style. I would recommend Congo and Sphere as other great techno-thrillers.

It's disappointing that The Maidens is maybe not so good, cause I loved The Silent Patient. Maybe I'll still check it out just in the interest of keeping up with the author.

My favorites: Wrath by John Gwynne and Beartown by Fredrick Bachman.

How beginner-friendly would fans say One Piece is? I have never read any manga (if that's even what One Piece is) before, and I wouldn't know how to get started. However, as Merphy is my favourite BookTuber and as she has begun producing so much One Piece content, I'm sort of tempted to get into it. As I live in Canada, I wouldn't even know where to start looking for copies of it, but it sounds pretty interesting, and I really think I would enjoy it if it is beginner-friendly

You can find One Piece in Indigo usually in the children's/Young Adult section. But given how huge the series is, online may be the best bet. Technically speaking, there is a page to explain how to read (back to front, right to left etc.) It's a pretty easy read.

It is amazing. Just read the first chapter and you'd understood if its worth your time or not lol. It definitely is one of best stories ever written doesn't matter manga or wht. Give it a shot its worth it. Its very emotional tho lol Im not able to share futher information as YT is blocking or some bug idk. @Jodie Hey Jodie! One piece is fantastic. As Merph said on the outside it may seem fun simple adventure but as you read more and more, It covers some of the best themes, Amazing commentary on the rl issues, Ridiculous Worldbuilding and Forshadowing done prior 10 years or so lol. I'd call it a modern epic easily! Give it a shot its worth it. Edit: "Manga Life" has it. Go for the coloured one as its better translated and more easy and engaging to read.

Murphy, I beg you, please read some Ursula K. Le Guin books. Her Earthsea Cycle is awesome, and the Lathe of Heaven is incredible. Her Hainish Cycle also has some amazing books, such as the Left Hand of Darkness and the Dispossessed, and that’s not to mention any of her great short stories (if you read any of her standalone short stories/novellas, I suggest either the One Who Walks away from Omelas, Paradises Lost, or Buffalo Gals Won’t You Come Out Tonight.

I don't have anything interesting to say about this, but algorithm, so I wil just take this opportunity to recommend you a book: Toby alone by Timothée de Fombelle. It's the first book in a duology. I know you don't like middle grade as much, but i think you might like this one. It's one of my favorite books of all time, but i never hear anybody talk about it.

Guess Piranessi is on my TBR!

I haven't read all that much this quarter...although in my defence I've had a good, health-related reason for that lol...So I'd say my favourites are...probably between Sagas of the Space Wolves (for making me fall back in love with those wonderful if occasional insane space Vikings lol), Mariel Of Redwall (that villain death though...good lord, how did these books get a Middle Grade rating?) and...well I've basically finished it, Folk and Fairytales of Azeroth, admittedly that one won't mean a whole lot if you have no link to Warcraft, but among other things I'm pleasantly surprised by the number of deep messages in it

Rocky is contender for Alien of the Decade.

Ooof I have a copy of the whispering dead… I do not want to read it now 😂

I think you would really enjoy FullMetal Alchemist. It's a manga that explores what it means to be alive, and contrasts this with the horrors of war. It's extremely well researched from the experiences of Japanese survivors of war. The tone switches between sweet, comical, and harsh. It's worth a look in for sure.

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms: First and second books were ok, but the third book is SIGNIFICANTLY better. It's a lot meatier than the first two books.

There are a number of Crichton books that were published after he died. Some of them written, from my understanding. Some were just outlines. I have a copy of 'micro' that I dropped very quick that I think was 'co-written' by somebody else. Be careful of some of his 'books' at this point. They might not actually be his, but be inspired by his outline, or the first few chapters, or something like that, from my understanding.

I mean there are a lot of horror sub genres … just like with fantasy lol. Just because it doesn’t terrify you doesn’t make it not horror. Darcy Coates writes cozy horror… so it’s not meant to be taken super seriously. I think if you want a ghost story that takes itself seriously you should read kill creek by Scott Thomas!

Well, I guess I am just going to have to give in to the inevitable and read One Piece. Where do I need to start?

I also really enjoyed Piranesi. These last few months, I also read Frankenstein for the first time (great), and The Abandoned (titled “Jennie” in the UK) by Paul Gallico. That book is about a boy who turns into a cat and receives cat lessons from Jennie, a streetwise tabby. It’s full of delightful insights into feline behavior.

Review Artemis by Andy Weir PLEASE!!!

A manga that I think you'd really enjoy is Fruits Basket. It's MUCH shorter than One Piece and is completed, so it's a much quicker read and a wonderful story about healing from domestic abuse and trauma.

Every book from Ryria Revelations gets better than the previous entry. Don't sleep on Chronicles or Age of Myth either

Michal J Sullivan has written one of my personal favorite none japanese series, one piece is not even my favorite Japanese story, you will see much latter that his foreshadowing is second only to Oda’s. Much like one piece you will like it more on the reread. You should read the prequels.

I didn't like The Maidens either. I didn't like any of the characters, and the ending was disturbing.

I must be the only person on Earth who didn't like Piranesi. Maybe I should reread it, but I thought it was plodding and boring. I didn't "get" it.

That's honestly understandable. It's an unusual and very character-focused book and not everyone will vibe with the writing style or the more 'slice of life' kind of plot. I doubt you are the only one. I personally really liked the book, especially because of the main character's strongly colored pov. I found the ending unsatisfying though: I feel like the book should have ended earlier or later in Piranesi's story.
