    the one major problem with the Quarian-Geth story is the ending. in ME2 Legion said that the end-goal of the Geth race was to be uploaded and unified into a single being where all can share thoughts simultaneously and never be alone again, then in ME3 the Quarians destroy this megastructure off-screen and the Geth give up on their dream for an unoriginal Plan B where they all get souls and individual intelligence.

    The reapers could have actually been the preserved ancient races. They could have been varied like they were at the end of mass effect 2. Imagine if the crucible had a wierd orb with strange holographic interface. Science teams trying to figure out how to use it. Then Shepard can. When he opens the interface all the reapers come to the crucible. The galaxy can't stop them. They circle it and then send a resurrected member of thier races to explain that this cycle has ascended and is now free to begin the true work necessary to preserve all space time. This might sound wierd but XCOM enemy unknown did something like this and its story but not story telling is better than masseffect 3.

    The one thing I hate about the Geth/Quarian conflict in ME3 is the fact that individuality is the Geth's end goal, and that Legion has to get sacrificed and doesn't even get featured in Citadel like Mordin does. Mordin's sacrifice felt like a natural end point to his arc, Legion had literally no reason to die.

  • @YorkJonhson

    @YorkJonhson

    Yeah, I still like a lot of what ME3 does and I like the end-result of making peace on Rannoch, but I do think the conflict kind of simplifies some of the grey morality and distinctions surrounding the Geth by changing up their nature as a collaborative hive-mind. There wasn't really an indication that Legion wanted to just be individualized in ME2, or that he insisted that Synthetic consciousness become exactly like organic consciousness beyond their demand for the right to peacefully exist as they are. (He even admits that reprogramming the heretics shouldn't be seen as a one-to-one moral comparison to brainwashing organics.) It made the Geth less relatable, but also more interesting as a concept.

    One thing to remember is that the Morning War happened 300 years earlier. The Quarians of today likely got a very biased account of what happened and the murderous robots and the atrocities they commited as they threw the poor Quarians off of their Homeworld. It is buried pretty deep in secondary codex entries, but from what is described it sounds like the Geth military assets were at about Turian level. During those 300 years the Geth were presumably smart enough to know that even if they did decide they had to wipe out the Quarians, they risked catastrophic damage if the other organic races retaliated. And Geth don't handle losses well, both in terms of its tangible effects on their intellectual capacity and the psychological reactions it inflicts on them. Thinking about it, the intense isolationist behavior was almost certainly at least partially motivated by something akin to fear: "We're on thin ice. We cannot risk invoking aggressive reprisal."

This gets reinforced by the culture as well of a bunch of gypsys pretty much kicked out of their home planet and nursing a LONG time grudge. They are also sent out into the galaxy to find something to bring back to the Flotila as a right of passage kind of thing do to the limited resources of the Flotila.

    I would say in defense of Quarians is that many people ignore or aren't aware of the subtext and implications of the Morning War. The Quarians accidentally created True AI their government upon realization of this tried to hammer down on it and destroy it. Many Quarians tried to stop it but they were either killed, silenced or shouted over; however enough of them survived that even in the present Korrel (iirc) was able to become an Admiral. This escalation created The Morning War. Their government then became reactionary and morphed into a full on Fascistic police state and censored all prior records and brainwashed to their best ability the remaining Quarians that they escaped with. The Quarians of "today" are the descendants of brainwashed fearful citizens, The desperate fearful tyrants and the protestors themselves. This isn't the Quarians as a whole hold a Massive L because they fucked over the Geth. This is the Quarians as a whole hold a Massive L because they allowed their government to become Fascistic and cocoon them in a web of lies and ignorance.

A few years ago, pre remaster I wanted to know what happened in Mass Effect and didn't feel like figuring out how to get a hold of the old games and spend dozens of hours on it. I just went to youtube and looked at compilations of cutscenes and conversations and I gotta say, finding out how cool Legion and the Geth are followed immediately by Quarians being the dumbest ever hits harder when its snapping back and forth in a compilation without being broken up by gameplay that gives you a little time to think on it. Like, literally at the pace you're reading this now, I got Legion saying something worldview changing-ly based followed by a high ranking Quarian saying the scary machines gotta go even if it kills us. It really takes the nuance out of this war and the choices people apparently have to make.

    We really need a source for this "ME2 geth writer claims they could toss around black holes no problem", because in all these years I've never seen an interview with any ME2 writer that features the geth that brought up anything like that xD (and no, for some who might wonder that, Chris L'Etoile in the old forums says nothing of the sort) I never got this impression of Legion saying "If we wanted, we could take over, but we don't wanna", I feel like Woolie is extrapolating Legion's pacifistic dialogue and vague info dumps about his people and going into anime territory and making them sound cooler than they are, just because they're the neat AI race lol Also, the quarians of now were 100% acting out of fear and ignorance with the geth, the quarians who killed those defending the geth are long dead, and the ones we have now are basically the next generations that have had their minds warped by those who killed their own people and were too fearful of the geth (in secret), painting them as bogeymen. The admirals of now don't even know of what truly happened on Rannoch, Wools, otherwise Mr. Qwib-Qwib would've brought up any of those quarians who died for the geth xD Additionally, I'm not sure why it's so hard for Woolie to buy that Javik is indeed philosophical, but that he was born in a time where machines were the Devil himself (except real) and had to deal with them since childhood, and this is his mindset towards machines, that they're unnatural. It was a battle between point of views, with neither side being wrong, I'd say (EDI can't claim that an upgrade is evolution the same way organic entities evolve, because that and upgrading oneself are very different hings...).

    The black hole thing is related to an abandoned storyline in ME2 about dark energy, which you hear mentioned constantly as some kind of threat. It's why Tali is on her mission, and it's why stars are behaving strangely. The Geth did not act aggressively towards the Quarians. Ever. It was a purely defensive war, to the point they were terraforming their home planet for them, right until relatively recently when the Reapers started influencing them. So sure, literally the absolute latest generation of admirals have a reason to fear the geth, but up until that point, 300 years of Quarians were so hateful and fearful of the Geth that they never even attempted diplomacy, despite the Geth's best attempts. Javik is a dumbass. Woolie absolutely has a bad habit where he has a thought, they keeps re-convincing himself that though was supported by the game until he's convinced there was iron-clad evidence of it. But with Javik, he's being a racist dipshit. The problem isn't the he has a different perspective, it's that he can't back any of it up, and just resorts to insulting everyone and calling them primitives. Being afraid of something and basing your entire position of that thing on your fear is not exactly what I would call philosophical. Literally every single example of AI we see in the current cycle is friendly, or only acting hostile out of fear. He's confronted with overwhelming evidence that AI is not inherently evil, and he doesn't even consider it for a second, instead calling everyone who points this out to him a primitive savage.

    The more I've thought about Mass Effect over the years the more I've come to think the trilogy structure and focus on Shepard as a chosen one drove most of the problems. The worldbuilding and plot had to be built around the fact that it was Shepard's journey with a beginning and end, rather than something like The Elder Scrolls where each game is a chapter in the history of Tamriel. They could have had a series of Shepard-centric games based around the Reapers and their allies to start off, but framed the whole conflict in a different way to unshackle the IP from a character-driven plot. So maybe ME2 has you definitively stop the Reapers by making it so they will have to spend millions of years travelling to the Milky Way at STL, but sets up Cerberus as the next big bad that will be trying to use Reaper tech to conquer the galaxy, then in one or two games you defeat them but that segues into a hot war between the Batarians and Humans or something, then the Quarians and Geth, and at some point along the way Shepard transitions into being the mentor for your next player character, etcetera.

  • @LordDrystan

    @LordDrystan

    Yeah, I appreciate in the Elder scrolls the heroes of the main games all have their own issues to deal with, and are only really remembered for the broad strokes of what they accomplished, not all of the innumerable side quests or people that may or may not be alive. The eternal champion saved uriel septim, the nerevarine broke the tribunal and dagoth ur, the Hero of Kvatch helped Martin Septim close the oblivion gates, and the Dragonborn stopped Alduin. But what guilds did they join? who died, who lived? Who cares, enough time has passed that all those people are dead or in an entirely different part of the continent, so it's whatever. And all the heroes pissed off in some way or another so they can't just fix the new problem. Nerevarine to Akavir, Hero of kvatch becomes Sheogorath, and the dragonborn is in Hermaeus Mora's domain. And if you positively cannot figure out how to solve the lore problem of what actually occurred, screw it, dragonbreak. Every single permutation is correct and incorrect at the exact same time, causing a timewarp where the problem was solved and the day was saved but also not. And i know that doesn't make sense, but shut up, it doesn't make sense to people in-universe either, you just pick whichever set of events you think was the correct one and we move on. Honestly, Bioware could have benefited from that kind of storytelling, so they don't have to hamstring themselves to preserve continuity.

Then the bit with the modern Quarians where their leaders are all military Admirals who likely use Geth as scapegoats for any problem ever because it's an easy out. I think something big to point out, is that some quarians did defense the geth in the initial conflict, and when the quarians fled the planet, it was probably mostly people who either hated the geth from the start, or grew to hate them because of the war. They would've told their kids "the geth are evil, fuck the geth, the geth are the reason we're on the flotilla!" And that would've been told to each new generation, all the way to now, 200 almost 300 years later, all the modern quarians were raised on generations of "geth are evil" redoric, and with the geth being so reclusive, few of them probably ever even met them to form their own opinions outside of combat. So while the decisions of the original quarians are dumb af, the decisions of the modern quarians make more sense atleast.......still wrong but with how they and their parents, grandparents etc were raised and having to struggle on to flotilla and having no personal contact with geth, it makes sense

I think that could have been a good alternative motivation for the Reapers, and made them slightly more "altruistic" with their clearing away each cycle. It's a logical decision backed up by what we've witnessed of the Protheans, and couldn't be dismissed by pointing to the current Geth like their AI motivation.

So mechanical life could far longer function as low temps are actually beneficial to them and direct energy input means they convert near 1:1. I recently did a ME3 playthrough and i got to the Quarian/Geth part and was 99% to Paragon 5. I thought "Oh I'll get that last bit of paragon somewhere along the way, no worries." That did NOT happen, I got the "bad'"(no paragon/renegade option) ending, and I didn't save so autosave would put me at the beginning of the final mission so I was stuck and my last save was about 8+ hours of gameplay behind. Now, I'm traumatized because, I did very well with my saves in 1 and 2, I had done a perfect ME2 run with everybody alive first attempt and I lost my fav weapon the N7 Typhoon.

    Ok. My take is the only geth that is sentient is the city of legion. They are pushing for using reaper code to elevate to a new contousness. To that end legion is trying to do whatever they can including manipulation of shepard: commander. The throughline of this game is that everyone except Shepard is getting ready to die. The quarians want rannoch back so they can die there. It all makes sense if you look at it like the world is ending. Fear is still a big factor. The geth, quarian war should mostly be a boring covert cyber war. It's like tony Stark acting like jean-luc gunning down ultron bots. It's absurd to me.

    My only problem with the Geth is how they retcon their whole getting smarter by having more in proximity thing. In ME1 this is assumed to mean the more geth platforms in the area the smarter they are because they can share hardware resources over local network. Then they introduce Legion and try to claim that having 1000’s of individual programs running on one platforms hardware can have e same intelligence enhancing effect. To me that sounds like expecting your computer to run better because you opened a half a dozen instances of your operating system on the same hardware at the same time.

    Feeling a little vindicated by this conversation lol A lot of pop culture has conditioned us to fear the "robot uprising" or whatever but this the Geth were just like "do we have a soul" and the Quarians noped the eff out and decided to unalive them all. You create an AI capable of learning and adapting and are then surprised it learned and adapted but all it sought to do was understand itelf and you just decide it's a threat bruh So anway, Paragon or Renegade, I side with Legion and tell the Quarians to deal with it (but the "everybody lives" scenario) Then, I am personally over Sci-Fi's obsession with oraganic vs synthetic stuff. Whether we are talking about Commander Data or Legion, in the context of the story, they are people so it's a moot point to me.

    The memories are a massive, last minute rewrite. The Geth hunted and killed 99 percent of the Quarian population. It does not matter what happened before that, that is genocide. The point of the Geth is to be an example of AI being an uncontrollable, dangerous entity. Getting them to become sentient and an actual race should be proving the Reapers wrong, not the Quarians.

    This is why I'm glad I played 3 the way I did. I played the first 2 on PC, but skipped 3 until I saw it for 5 dollars on PS3. I imported my Shepard's face for fun, and played with a fresh save. It was one of the most agonizing gaming experiences for me, and it made the unpatched ending work better imo. The entire story is Shepard trying to fix a dying galaxy with duct tape as that very task tears apart your mind. It was pretty wild. The Quarian part was straight up demented, and Tali comes off as such a psycho bitch... Especially since you can't save both races, and the way Tali is super happy the geth are dead made me turn on everyone's favorite space queen. But there was no choice. I've never forgotten that playthrough, it ruled.

The Krogan are a threat beyond threats if the genophage is cured, same with the geth, if they're allowed sentience at their level of technology and ability to replicate, the universe is basically fucked because at some point the chickens will come home to roost. Just weird how if a race (or synthetics) have been "mistreated" in any way, shape or form even if they were being killed for very real, very serious self preservation reasons for the rest of the galaxy, Woolie says the galaxy needs to drop all hostility and give them every opportunity to rebuild to insane levels thus giving everyone else no ability to defend against their aggression. I really dislike how Me3 makes the whole geth quarian conflict look. The Geth are portrayed as entirely victims despite the fact that they killed millions upon millions of civilians including the ones in colonies, and killed any organic that entered the veil for over 300 years. The Quarians have to travel around in a giant fleet wearing suits their whole lives and can't settle down on a planet because the council threatens them when they try. The root cause of this is due to the Geth, yes the Quarians attacked first, but that doesn't change the fact that the remaining Quarians have every reason to be hostile to the Geth. The geth do not ever try to talk to any organic species aside from Legion, and that was after a faction of them attacked and killed alot of people in Me1. Hell Legion is made for communication and if you try to get him to talk to the Quarian leadership he just refuses. Me3 unfairly drops all of the fault at the Quarians, who do deserve some of it, but not all of it. That and the Geth changed from Me2 to Me3, they originally wanted their collective intelligence instead of individuality like they do in 3. Legion says the Geth program with the Reaper code is indicative of life, but the Geth are already alive. The reaction Shepard has to them using Reaper code and technology is also lackluster. Shepard is just like oh ok, Me3 is really inconsistent with what indoctrinates and what doesn't. The rachni queen or the Geth can't be controlled but indoctrination was all over Me1 even if you weren't on Sovereign.

    Mass Effect 3’s biggest problems are that two of the best stories are the results of characters completely swapping goals in between games. Mordin has a whole thing about how the genophage was the right thing to do, and even his loyalty mission is about supporting the genophage. Then in 3 he’s like “oops I guess I was wrong” and it’s bizarre. Similarly, the Geth went from “we will never use Reaper tech because we want to evolve and develop along our own lines” to “hmm but that Reaper tech tho”
