Or for me who feels that those huge 4X games are just too much bookkeeping and in turn not rewarding me with enough strategic depth as a trade off. I prefer cleaner games with emergent depth not just spread sheets.

I love 4x games and having one this simple to get other people into is fantastic. Thanks for the things you do, folks.

Of course, your review was a masterpiece as much as Quantum is a masterpiece of design. Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention.

I was lucky enough to get this from my local boardgame cafe that was having a sale of it... and a couple of people I just met that night told me I should totally get it. It even came with the expansion. My wife enjoys it and keeps kicking my butt. I, the geek, actually have trouble getting into the theme, and I love sci-fi. But I don't regret getting it. I just wish I could get into it more so I would love playing it more.

Great review as always and I simply love Quantum. It's one of my favorite boardgames because of the different strategies you can come up with while playing and feeling really smart after executing an awesome move no one saw coming. Some of the command cards are over powered compared to others though. Especially the mentioned righteous card is very powerfull because it enables the player having it into abandoning the quest to poop his cubes the usual way and simply blowing up enemy ships until he pooped his cubes everywhere. Quantum being out of print is sad though. Maybe the publishers will do another print run eventually.

I think a way to make Righteous more balanced is to make both you and anyone you engage in combat with not lose dominance. That way you aren't putting everyone who you kill at a further disadvantage, snowballing your advantage.

One of the few games I bought before I started watching SU&SD, and I simply adore it. It's one of the strongest games I've ever played mechanically, and it allows people to win through a few different skills (though those who can best grok the combinations of ship powers are going to succeed most often). It may lack a few features of more glamorous 4X's, but it polishes the diamond core around which they all revolve to a mirror finish.

I have a bunch of friends who aren't as into the hobby as I am and hoodwinked them into playing Scythe. What a slog, having to rules lash them every turn. It'll be fun to see how they react when i say, "remember Scythe? imagine playing that polished down to just the fun bits."

I've been wanting to grab this since the second edition came out, but then other games come out... first "world" problems. I never looked at it as a 4X game, very neat. I looked at it as more akin to an area control-ish abstract. And I enjoy sci-fi themes for not being another gorgeous fantasy theme. Either way... to my collection, mwhahahahaha! PS: Thanks guys for the reviews and hard work :)

Quantum is amazing and if you don't own it you should (if you can afford it and find it). It also has a special prize for the game that has destroyed the most friendships. On a critical note, any dice game has a lot of luck and can take strategy and throw it out the window, but that is what also makes quantum fun. Also the upgrade cards dramatically change the game, some are better then others. Normally this is bad but it makes this the game more fun, because it forces you to think differently each game, rather than turn out the same sequence of turns every game until the person with the better memory wins. PS: Great review!

I've admired the design of this game for a long time, and I'm a sucker for ships in space. BUT, I can avoid the sense that in the end, it's just a well disguised, bean-counter version of combat Yatzee. As in, whomever manages to most effectively run their personal dice odds algorithm will always come out the winner. I don't want a game that's an elaborate math problem.

  • @artstsym

That's only true in a 2 player game. While you can certainly build your tech to a nearly unassailable level with the right combinations, and while players with strong eyes for combo plays will excel, there is very much still an element of diplomacy involved when the combined might of 2 or 3 players can be brought against an overly aggressive strategy. Players who understand systems, who can quickly assess risk, AND who can keep others fighting each other will come out on top the vast majority of the time.

  • @kaesar98

I think you guys are drawing too distinct of a line between "geeks" and "non-geeks." Comics, sci-fi, and board games are no longer tiny niche things, they're incredibly popular these days. Popular board games like Catan and Pandemic have broadened the horizons for so many beyond the typical Monopoly & company. So while more people want and would enjoy playing strategic, thematic sci-fi games instead of casual games, there are many people who don't have the time or are willing to devote as much time to playing board games as more involved hobbyists are. There are a lot of people in that middle area.
