"Done is better than perfect" I try to live by that philosophy. If your early work fail to live up to its' potential, it's probably because you just couldn't do better at the time. You can always use your new skills and experience to revisit the same themes and ideas in a superior work years later. (Compare Richard Linklater's early "Slacker" with his later "Waking Life")

Literally just the first minute of this was so helpful. Been in this limbo where I want to make these big top notch projects because my standards have gotten higher but I'm slacking on the consistency and providing content. I've been challenging this whole "EVERYTHING HAS TO BE THE BEST QUALITY FOR MY FANS" facade I had. It wasn't for fans nor for my own artistic development but for my own ego. Quantity really is just as important as the quality of your videos. Especially in this content creation era where you have to keep on producing and delivering material to maintain any cultural relevance amongst your peers.

Exactly! This is my exact mindset, I see all those big ass cohesive albums by big ass artists and I have this unstoppable urge to make the same thing, but Im not there yet, it's like I know the problem and I know the solution but I can't come to my senses and thing logically, I wanna make this ultimate cohesive perfect project that is gonna be a classic. But I can't. And that's okay.

Love the message. What I love about short films is that, at the end of the day, they are disposable. They take less time, they cost less money, and are a sandbox/testing ground for gaining new skills and practicing existing ones. And whether you win or lose, succeed or fail, you still become a better filmmaker.

I feel like I get WAY too caught up in technique (i.e. this shot needs to be framed this way, the lighting isn't right, etc.) and I end up working harder instead of smarter. It took me a long time to get over perfectionism and just do the process.

Great advice. Great suggestions. Great information. I recently decided to take a short film I was writing, and make it even shorter. Just so I would have something doable. The cool part about it, was I took an idea from another story I had outlined, and used it to make this other story shorter. It's hard to explain without giving away the story. And, as Darious mentions in this video, I am making this short without imposing a level of quality on it. I am making it so I start creating "quantity" and hone my skills in the process. Over and out.

Ideally, learning a little at a time, and growing with smaller projects is the way you should go. You can afford to make mistakes on a small project. The bigger the project, the more magnified the mistakes become. However, sometimes circumstances just throw you into the deep end, and you've got to learn it all the hard way. My first short film crash and burned halfway through production. Then, I had numerous casting attempts at other projects that failed miserably. Then, the one thing I finally got off the ground was a 50 page neo noir thriller script that turned into a 95 minute feature. I had my DP stand us up on day one of production forcing filming to be extended out into a 18 month journey facing nearly every production setback you could imagine. That started in 2006. The movie is finally being released in 2018 because of all the problems I've had assembling the proper soundtrack for the film. I had over a dozen music supervisors on the movie that never accomplished anything for what I wanted. The whole production was a learning experience from beginning to end, but I was fortunate to have a lot of committed people during filming that gave me everything they had to offer. Those same people are still excited to see the final product all these years later. Another fortunate thing is that if the film had been released years ago it wouldn't be turning out nearly as well as it is now. All the years of evolving my editing skills as well as my improved knowledge of audio editing has helped it a whole lot. What I learned on that feature film made my next film, a half hour short, such a better experience altogether. I knew more than I had before, gained a strong and experienced cast and crew that worked extremely well together, and really nailed what I wanted from it. Still, you're always going to continue learning, and whatever experiences you run through that allow you to enhance your skills and talent, just make sure you're going out there and making something happen.
