“Quantity builds skills, Quality builds careers” - D4Darious 2018
“Done is better than perfect” this will be why I have 30 videos of footage I haven’t finished yet... thanks for the kick up the ass 👍🏻
Dude, how you keep a coherent, singular sentence over so many different locations and times is incredible. Near-like wizardry.

That's quality style!
"Done is better than perfect" I try to live by that philosophy. If your early work fail to live up to its' potential, it's probably because you just couldn't do better at the time. You can always use your new skills and experience to revisit the same themes and ideas in a superior work years later. (Compare Richard Linklater's early "Slacker" with his later "Waking Life")
Thanks D4, thought provoking!

Thank you for stopping through CJ! Always a pleasure, Brutha.
I made one short film a week for one entire year. After those 52 projects I was ready to work for money and I’ve got Film company ever since.

Literally just the first minute of this was so helpful. Been in this limbo where I want to make these big top notch projects because my standards have gotten higher but I'm slacking on the consistency and providing content. I've been challenging this whole "EVERYTHING HAS TO BE THE BEST QUALITY FOR MY FANS" facade I had. It wasn't for fans nor for my own artistic development but for my own ego. Quantity really is just as important as the quality of your videos. Especially in this content creation era where you have to keep on producing and delivering material to maintain any cultural relevance amongst your peers.

Exactly! This is my exact mindset, I see all those big ass cohesive albums by big ass artists and I have this unstoppable urge to make the same thing, but Im not there yet, it's like I know the problem and I know the solution but I can't come to my senses and thing logically, I wanna make this ultimate cohesive perfect project that is gonna be a classic. But I can't. And that's okay.
That video really made me think, thanks for making it.

>>> This Video Is So, So Good! And Important!
Besides all the truth in this video, I am amazed how could he put it together, with lines all over the place, and frames and build the narrative so well and concise
Love the message. What I love about short films is that, at the end of the day, they are disposable. They take less time, they cost less money, and are a sandbox/testing ground for gaining new skills and practicing existing ones. And whether you win or lose, succeed or fail, you still become a better filmmaker.

You hit the nail on all counts. As time goes on my appreciation for making short films only seems to increases lol.
Been debating this myself a lot recently. I am definitely in the beginner stage of creating video so have been doing short vids daily to build up skills and momentum to get the ability to finish projects as I was overthinking the quality of the vids. Not even looking for views at this point just building that skill base. Nice video Darious✊🏽
"it's like writing a novel a week after just learning your ABC's" best thing I've heard in a while
Thank you so much for this one. Now I realise I'm a beginner, even if I'm making a lot of videos with good quality I still need more time and skills to learn from. Thank you again so much
I don't even make films but this video was a gem! I'm definitely sharing this
Great stuff! I love the three-tiered breakdown of the phases. Tim from Video Creators had you on the End Screen, and I’m happy to be here.

@@D4Darious Nice to hear back from you Darious. We often have people comment on our channel to interview you. If you have any upcoming plans to be in the LA area and would like to talk filmmaking with us, we'd love to make that happen. In any case, keep up the great work.
Congrats on almost 300k. Been watching your channel for a long time. Thnx for all the great info. Keep it going!
I really love that you started uploading again, peace out ;-)
This advice applies to more then just film making... but almost anything you do in life. Solid advice man
Hey Darious, just wanted to say this channel is amazing. This video, in particular, is a super insightful take on the topic of professional progression. I'm not even a filmmaker or scriptwriter. I'm actually a novelist, but everything you say holds true. In order to acquire skills, you gotta write a lot. And no one should start off their journey in, well, anything with a huge project. Good stuff, man. Thanks for uploading
Thanks for sharing just another awesome video! I always enjoy watching all the material you post as it it such a treat for the viewer! Perfect balance between information, education and just an genuine love for the craft. The way you say it and how you cut it all together just put a smile on my face and keeps me longing for more! You really inspired me to just shoot more video, to build up more skill and to have some fun while doing it, before worrying too much about everything being just right. I love the expression; ‘Done is better than perfect’ - how right you are! Thanks! I needed this!
Really cool kinda chill pacing! Keep it up dude!
Well, I finally understood: it's better to do small projects and more often to learn before it lasts a long time to do something big and for which you have not learned enough yet. Thank you, brother!
This video is so great, just like all of your content!! Always one of my favorite channels to watch!!
Great video I was just thinking about the situations and the process. Just decided to go back to the beginning and working on my first phase. I've been working on film sets for quite some time. just checked out your channel and saw this video and it confirms just what I was thinking. Really like what your doing keep up the good work and the lessons.
Your videos are always so helpful and informative. I can see you directing feature films in the near future. Much respect, man. Keep it up!
Dude, I'm so thankful for the videos you make. Hope this is bringing you as many opportunities as your videos are for ppl who watch it.
Beginner phase and proud to admit it! 👍 I'll be there one day
Quality advice brother
Mannnnnnnnn!! This is so well put together! Great job Darious! Thanks for the tips 🔥
Completely on point as usual. I am at that awkward phase right at the end of the beginner and intermediate where i know enough to be dangerous, but I am having trouble slowing down to really apply the quality. Habits of a year of daily vlogging are hard to break. You my friend keep Killen it man. You are always putting out helpful informative content. I really enjoy it.
I feel like I get WAY too caught up in technique (i.e. this shot needs to be framed this way, the lighting isn't right, etc.) and I end up working harder instead of smarter. It took me a long time to get over perfectionism and just do the process.
good point, the thing about people like Casey or Peter is that their videos are very high quality but they are really about nothing
This was perhaps the best filming advice of 2018. All true!
Thanks man. Always good to hear a good advice 🤘🏼
Really great breakdown. Appreciate your thoughts
Great advice. Great suggestions. Great information. I recently decided to take a short film I was writing, and make it even shorter. Just so I would have something doable. The cool part about it, was I took an idea from another story I had outlined, and used it to make this other story shorter. It's hard to explain without giving away the story. And, as Darious mentions in this video, I am making this short without imposing a level of quality on it. I am making it so I start creating "quantity" and hone my skills in the process. Over and out.
Heck, I'm not even looking to make films - just a writer transitioning to scriptwriting and absorbing everything I can along the way to get what the folks I'll be working with do, and where they're coming from - and this is a terrific video, and solid advice - thanks for putting in the time to give - peace -
that was incredibly good! Thank you Bro! :)
Always Great Content! You never disappoint... Thanks for sharing wisdom beyond your years. Be well and stay encouraged Mr. Darious!

This right here is just pure GOLD!!!
Awesome advice ... thank you!
Always seem to have the exact words I need to hear, right when I need to hear them... D on point, AS USUAL!! Thank u
Please always remember you don't have to have a lot of fancy stuff to make something of good quality or better. Always shoot for good quality work or beyond. I'd rather have a little of something of good quality than a lot of poor quantity "art."
I never thought of it that way. Thanks for the insight!
Yours is one of the most inspiring channels I watch. Thanks a lot for this type of content, makes us think and move forward. Best wishes from Brazil!
I think your work is very skilled! you have all the right stuff that keeps me watching. keep up the great work!

This is for me! Thank you so much!
I needed this. Working on my first mini doc for a competition. Not very high quality, but I need the reps to build the skills. Thanks for what you do D!
"Done is better than perfect, do the best you can & then just keep moving" wrote that on a scrap of paper and taped it above my editing desk. Thank you.
Excellent video. Thank you.
The best advice i could get at this point in my film making career. Thank You!!!!!
Thanks D. Powerful advice.

luv the cuts, 1 sentence, million locations, great job!
Thanks for sharing these words of wisdom!
Loved this video as i'm at the beginner stage right now. I shoot short sci-fi films with my smartphone. I try to shoot something every 3 weeks just to build up my skills.
Very solid video, thanks.
Well said man. This really made me reflect on my current pursuits and goals and put them in check. Thanks
Wonderful video as always Darious! It's ok that you don't produce as many videos for KZread like some people. But, when you do upload a new one it's gold!
this video is exactly what ive needed. I've been wanting to make short films but have only wanted to do something good but this makes me realize I need to just do it. Practice. thank you
Thanks man!!!
Clears up a lot. Very informative.
Probably the best explanation I've gotten so far. And I can tell there was a lot of work put into this video nice job bruh.
You just solved a problem I was facing. I finished my first real short film and it.. kinda sucks. I mean no it doesn’t but it’s not as good as I thought it would be. But your video just opened my eyes on where my problem was. It’s not I’m not talented enough but I need to do it again and again before getting results. I mean it sounds obvious to say that but to me it wasn’t. I mean I’m really ambitious in the stories I want to put on screen maybe to much, so thanks Darious for all your advices. Precious help
Dude, this is what I needed to hear. You're so right. :0
Amazing, Darious! You happen to sell every line. All goes smooth. I think rare viewer understand how much and hard work it really needs.
This is good stuff man! Inspiring and informative!
love your vids and I think I want to make sort films this video was vary helpful!!
I need it so much this words right now, thanks Darious. Greetings from Peru
Great insights man! Keep it up
Incredibly fresh and unique tone to this one, d-bird. Great advice as well. You're a big inspiration, man!
how the heck did you make this video? ive wanting to make it lik this (casey does it) but how te hell did you plan this, CAME OUT AMAZING
Thanks for this D! I have been focusing on quantity to build skills, and now am ready to start focusing on more quality. I appreciate the reminder. You have to establish a habit before you can optimize/improve on it.
Dude love the structure of this, well done! I've been mulling over this style of video structure in my head for years and it's really inspiring to see it in use. Time for me to get my ass in gear and get a script done for something in this style 🙂🙂🙂
Ideally, learning a little at a time, and growing with smaller projects is the way you should go. You can afford to make mistakes on a small project. The bigger the project, the more magnified the mistakes become. However, sometimes circumstances just throw you into the deep end, and you've got to learn it all the hard way. My first short film crash and burned halfway through production. Then, I had numerous casting attempts at other projects that failed miserably. Then, the one thing I finally got off the ground was a 50 page neo noir thriller script that turned into a 95 minute feature. I had my DP stand us up on day one of production forcing filming to be extended out into a 18 month journey facing nearly every production setback you could imagine. That started in 2006. The movie is finally being released in 2018 because of all the problems I've had assembling the proper soundtrack for the film. I had over a dozen music supervisors on the movie that never accomplished anything for what I wanted. The whole production was a learning experience from beginning to end, but I was fortunate to have a lot of committed people during filming that gave me everything they had to offer. Those same people are still excited to see the final product all these years later. Another fortunate thing is that if the film had been released years ago it wouldn't be turning out nearly as well as it is now. All the years of evolving my editing skills as well as my improved knowledge of audio editing has helped it a whole lot. What I learned on that feature film made my next film, a half hour short, such a better experience altogether. I knew more than I had before, gained a strong and experienced cast and crew that worked extremely well together, and really nailed what I wanted from it. Still, you're always going to continue learning, and whatever experiences you run through that allow you to enhance your skills and talent, just make sure you're going out there and making something happen.
Just an awesome video! Thank you for sharing!
You are always inspiring and always sharing your knowledge! Thanks for being awesome!!! Love how you put together this video with different shots, creative!
Interesting 🤔 I luv how you break it down so smooth.

Love this breakdown
You dropped so much truth in this video! I def did so much quantity in my beginner phase. Graduated to the intermediate phase, but I think I'll be here for a Long time before reaching expert quality.
