    ariel corcia I've been watching film making videos for like 2 years but I often go in and out of those binge watching phases. Damn I need to do something concrete when it comes to film man.. When I'm inspired I feel like I'm fucking Kubrick theorically but most of the time I'm think to myslef "Am I fucking talentless?" yeah sad I know lol.

    I took your 50-50 and "video head" advice to heart. I immediately paused the video, went to my other computer, and started pulling clips from a show we played last year to try to make a practice video. I learned more in that hour of trial and error than I did in hours of watching KZread. Thank you so much!

    woah how am I just finding this?! I really needed this. I'm one of those who just watches loads of tutorials/explanations and then get overwhelmed with where to start whereas your 30 day curriculum starts really simple with stuff that I might overlook and progresses as the days go on. I'm gonna try doing this and maybe I'll make videos documenting my process with it too.

    I remember watching this over a year ago. I went and shot my first micro film. It was my first time using a camera that wasn't my Sony Handycam (shot on a Canon T5i). My photography teacher gave me an insane amount of gear: 3 lenses, H1n, boom, cage, crane (WHAT). It obviously didn't turn out how I imagined it to be, but I had a ton of fun. Since then I have learned as much as I can about cameras and own 2 of my own (SL2 and M50) and have created numerous micro films, each of which I learned so much from. Now I feel more confident than ever in regards to my skills and am ready to go into production of my new short. Thanks for keeping me in this D4!

    How do you know if you're making mistakes if you don't really know what you're doing? It's like when you paint something and it's perfect to you but until someone more professional can tell you something wrong with it, you didn't know you made those mistakes. What if you don't have anyone professional to critique your stuff?

    I have had that question too for a while now, I don't know anyone personally who does painterly edits to their photos like me so it's hard to know what things I could be doing to make it better. I guess you just have to find a place online where people (who know what they're talking about) can give constructive feedback.

    Why do I have the impression that screenwriting is always mentionned as something that isn't very important? like something to do in the last minute? It's really odd because what actually makes a fantastic movie is the story !!! you can have great sound , visuals, acting and everything but if the story is stupid , weak or cliché then all the work would be in vain and almost no one would be that interested ! SCREENWRITING SHOULD BE TAUGHT FIRST ! It should take the largest part of filmmaking studies I think.. people should learn how to think outside of the box, how to imagine original stuff and come up with amazing ideas...it's the number one key to a great movie, in my opinion.

    Hey Dude! Great vid - one question - how can I get crisp, crystal clear focus in my DSLR? Having loads of issues and just when I think I got it - nope... Using a Canon 700D (T5 Rebel I think in the US) with the kit 18-55mm and a 24mm prime. Neither seem to give me a clear image - either on the tripod, run and gun or vlogging style - and I've tried autofocus, full manual, watched endless vids yet still this damn focus thin! Help! My cinematographer fried says just give up and buy a video camera - but I aint convinced that's the right answer s I've seen awesome SLR stuff out there.

  • @NenadNarana

    Jon Telcher have you tried to use the magnify feature and adjust the focus that way? for run and gun i would say that the camera may not be ideal. In which conditions do you shoot? low light? close your apperture as much as you can so there is more things in focus. I didn't cover everything but it might help as a starting point. For vlogs I would use a point and shoot, gopro or something like that. Check Casey neistats gear, I believe he uses the 80d but I'm not sure how the autofocus compares to your camera. I use t3i BTW which doesn't have continuous autofocus so those kind of cameras are not ideal.

    Thanks-I live in the tropics and have light extremes - very bright outside/very dark inside - and haven't considered the aperture in terms of focus (just in managing exposure till now) - I think that may be the root of my issue - thanks for the tip! I do use the image zoom to get in and try to adjust focus - that seems to be working. I need to light my interior shots better....

    Jon Telcher I have a rebel t6 and have had no problem with the focus. So far everything has been crystal clear- so I would say just keep adjusting the settings.. maybe try a different lens.

  • @jontelcher2165

    @jontelcher2165

    Is the T6 the 80D? I think it's a combination of me being very inexperienced with the gear and not understanding how the autofocus actually worked - but the past few days I've been working on it - and think I nailed it - coupled with low light when I shoot my vlog inside I had the aperture stopped to 2.4 (limit of lens - Canon EF-S 24mm) and learning that at that aperture setting the depth of focus is very narrow - so I'm now working within an F-Stop range of 4 to 8 - seems to be working much better now (need lights which will be delivered this week). The continuous autofocus is really no good for me - so have identified that's a feature not or me! I think I'll look at the 80D.Then I go outside and as I live in the tropics I have to close off the aperture so much - although now playing around with an ND filter which helps.

    here's my life, i know many of you will not care but this is for those who have time to read this. so after high school, i was clueless in what to do. i fell into depression feeling so useless everyday because i couldn't find a hobby besides playing games 24/7 and sitting in my room with suicidal thoughts. playing games and sitting in my room lead to smoking weed everyday to kill time. i finally realized that life is too short and i would eventually kill myself if i did this for the next few years. although many would say "playing games and smoking weed 24/7 is the life and you should enjoy it," i didn't because it was the same old shit every single day. these thoughts and the condition i was in became worse. 6 months later, I'm still stuck in my own world doing the same shit, but because of this channel, i was able to figure out something i want to do in life and that was film making. i can't wait to get my first camera and to see what the next few years will bring me in film making. hope you enjoyed my little short story and a huge part of my life. finally, thanks for those who spent their quality time reading this, means alot to me. and also, any quick tips on anything would help tremendously.

    d a t r u m a It's crazy how someone's life can be completely parallel to another person. I'm 26 and that is exactly my story. Especially the depression and suicide part. Me and a few friends get together every now and then to drink and complain about our jobs (warehouse worker). Literally just 4 days ago my friend text me and said he had been writing a script and wanted me to play a role. And then I found this channel as well. It's like a sense of purpose just fell out of the sky.

    bro, i just read this and felt like i should reply just to let you know that i do care. i know how you feel, i've also had that sense of aimlessness, like im not making progress, like im constantly playing catch up.. but the storm has to come to an end, it cant rain forever. every day is a new day and its up to you to make something of it. the best part of anything camera related be that photo or video, is that you dont need anyone else to do. im a photographer thats now learning film making and photography has taught me SO MUCH. its something you will only understand once you immerse yourself in the art, practice everyday, share your work and improve. i even get paid now to do gigs, which is incredible. so yeah, i hope this gives you little encouragement, an awareness that you are not alone, and some drive to do anything you put your mind to.

I need to stop watching videos and making excuses and just shoot. Thanks for the template bro. I want to take advantage of the resources you offer on your website, but first PRACTICE! Thank you!

    Hay Brian I suggest to use your other options until you're able to own your camera and lenses. Use your phone bruh, or a friend's camera. The main thing is this man........you gotta do this bruh!!!! Practice practice practice and practice practice practice. Once you think practice is pretty good continue to practice. In your practice, you will begin to understand that Victory Loves Preparation. In order to be a success in your creative endeavors, know your purpose when you enter the filmmaker's world. Shoot anything that peaks your interest and follow Darius creative checklist. Save your money teach yourself and invest your money in your craft not these crazy institutions. Poor Life or Rich Life good thing is Brian has a life to go out and create!!!! No money required to think and imagine amazing ideas. Come on Brian we're waiting to be inspired you are the only one that holds that key!!!

  • @JohnnyBunning

    @JohnnyBunning

    7 жыл бұрын

    Not really. The basics are the biggest part anyways, a lot of filming is taking the basics and using it creatively. He does have some more advanced stuff. In his last video he recorded his fan for audio, then sped it up and slowed it down. Then put it all together used it for dramatic effect as an ambient background noise. Was a cool trick and somewhat advanced. That's just one example, I'm sure there's plenty more.

  • @D4Darious

    I have several videos on cinematography breakdowns, three act structure and I've done a series on story structure breakdowns of popular movies. The problem with going too advanced is 95% of my audience isn't there yet. As a result, most of those videos don't get views lol. It's like a catch 22 unfortunately.

I am 41 and although I do have a good job that's gotten me a house, car, and pays the bills, but my childhood dream has always been wanting to be a filmmaker. I am not sure if I am too old/late to start learning all of this, but I can try. Even though most of the things, terms, tech words you used I am quite clueless to, I am going to follow through every single one of your advice and see what happens! At this point in my life, I really want to do something that I've always dreamed of wanting to do. I don't care if it's too late.

    One thing I've noticed about learning composition is that, since it works for basically all kinds of image-mediums, you can learn really useful stuff from videos about painting, photography, cinematography, 3d modeling (Blender Guru on YT is a composition guru), and anything else that is technically a picture.

    I know nothing about filmmaking but I'm interested in learning. The hardest thing when you try to learn something new for yourself is not knowing what you don't know, if that makes sense. This usually ends up in watching random videos on various subjects without any sense of order. Thank you for laying a simple roadmap to get people started, this way you can add simple layers of knowledge to the stuff you learned previously.

I also want to act, even if it is for short films, so I am stoked to learn.
