MacFarlene's newest show 'The Orville' actually discussed sexchange only it handled the subject much better than here.

I... I honestly think the Orville is halfway decent. If I do have one problem, it's that the overall tone of the show is actually dead serious, but the show still tries to tell jokes, but it doesn't do it often enoughankd it kind of comes off as a bit jarring.

To me, the worst thing the writers did was the episode where she finally stood up to her family and put them in their place they had her take it all back just because the truth made them unhappy. Everyone including Meg and Brian (who wasn't even involved until the end because he was high on mushrooms) were okay with it. In fact, he praised her for making the choice to let her loser family abuse her to keep them together. At this point, it would be better for everyone if the family just fell apart and everyone went off on their own. Even solo Stewie or Stewie in a better foster home would do better than this dysfunctional mess.

@@kalababraha9049 depends on how you look at it. It's all satire so I would say no. Trans problems are not a joke to us. They are very real so I consider it inappropriate. There are people who are disowned, cast out, and even at the most extreme raped and killed for being Trans. I think Seth should have taken this more seriously rather than make it a punch line. Like I agree with every word spoken by anyone who reviews this episode negatively. If you are here for comedy then by all means but if you want to see this be handled well and be taken seriously then you will be let down. Like the scene where Brian pukes for like 2 minutes straight, ya that is heavily offensive. Like he couldn't even tell the difference cause ida was such a believable woman so why does it matter? Sexuality is about attraction more than any thing else so he was horrified because I can only guess toxic masculinity. This person was so much like a woman in both mannerisms and physicality but because they were once male, he was disgusted to the point of throwing up. That's ridiculous and insensitive. For some of us, the process has been very emotionally damaging because even though we are doing what makes us happy, it comes with a lot of costs and one of those is bigotry like idiots who claim we aren't the gender we are trying to become. We put a lot of time, money, and pain into our changes so that makes us feel invalidated like others are not acknowledging the sacrifices we have made to gain happiness. I will never say that I know completely what it is to be a woman as there are many things I cannot presently experience such as carrying a child and giving birth, but I am a woman because I wanted to be and I have done much to become one. Hormone injections, vocal surgery, learning new mannerisms and finding a new feminine style of clothing, learning how to do hair and make up, etc etc all so I could be who I am. The least anyone can do is admire how far I have gone for this. Hell, what you should do if you don't understand is ask me as many questions as you like But instead, we are hated and treated horribly as if we are some abomination derived from a mental disorder. Sorry this was so long but I wanted to explain how I feel. Thank you for asking. All I want is for people to care enough to ask so there is less ignorance. When we understand, we stop fearing and hating.

The way I would rewrite this episode: (Note, I will refer to Dan as he while male and to Ida as she while female) Dan calls Quagmire and tells him he's gonna visit the next day and has something important to tell him. Keep some of the beginnings the same because they aren't that bad. Anyways, after the meeting, rather than him asking at the meeting, he waits until they gets home and he comments about it in an awkward joke (I mean, all those guys were talking as if you were gay or something, that's not the case, right?), and he tells Quagmire to sit down. After sitting down, he goes into a bit of context, before finally telling Quagmire his idea, and asking for his approval. After some thinking and a few gags, Quagmire says yes, proceed to sex change operation. Anyways, after the change, Ida starts getting treated differently, whether it be treated overly strongly as a female, or people insisted she's still male. And cue discrimination, not being allowed into bars, being on the news, etc. etc. just being treated differently because of it. Lois being no exception. Rather than being like... well... that, she acts more like in the Gay Marriage one, where she was taught to believe something rather than just being a bitch about it. (I just think that it's odd, I mean, why would you want to do something as crazy as changing your gender, I mean, it just doesn't make any sense?) Anyways, at this point, Brian comes in, and do everything the same except their encounter. there, try to make it longer, that way, they seem to know each other better than it just being sex, until Stewie tells him. There, rather than having him throw up, have him do that thing where they lose their balance, and sit down for bit, face in hands, thinking. He decides to sleep on it for a bit before getting a text from Ida, then texting her back that he wants to meet up. After which, he "breaks up" with Ida, not because she's trans, no, but because she didn't tell him. (I'm sorry, I don't care that you were once a man, you are more intelligent and interesting than any in a while, but I can't trust you since you couldn't tell me something so important. After that, the climax. At this point, the Quahog is at it's worse, and they almost riot to drive her out of Quahog. At this point, Brian stands up for Ida, as well as Quagmire and a few others. Touched by their stance, Lois decides to join them, and later says that while she isn't sure quite yet, she will try to adapt. Back to the riot, some gag happens and the town decides to scatter, having better things to do, and that ends that. And then, Ida and Brian have a nice moment, which ends with them being friends. (You know I'm still not gonna go out with you right? Yes, I know, I don't wish to either.) This is just my idea for a story, do what you will with the humor, but I think if they wanted a sympathetic portrayal, this may be how I would do it. Like I said, I didn't add much humor, but for a story, I think this isn't bad.

Endershock1678 I honestly love your idea. It would make the episode more sympathetic. I have a friend who's a trans man, it took some time to get used to him being a boy, but he's still my friend and I genuinely asked polite questions about things. I think he would be offended by this episode. Also, this episode doesn't even cover how most trans people are kicked out of their homes and often ejected from their families for being trans.

This kind of dismisses any excuse for Seth MacFarlane as to why Family Guy is so bad. He keeps saying that he doesn't want anything to do with Fox or Family Guy anymore, so why doesn't he try to cut ties? Even if Fox keeps Family Guy going, at least Seth will have a leg to stand on that he's not responsible for the decline of the show.

The Golden Girls also covered something similar. It was about Sophia's son and Dorothy's brother Phil, who was a crossdresser. He died from a heart attack, and Sophia was ashamed of Phil being a crossdresser, and for the longest time, she blamed his wife Angela for that. While most of that episode was lighthearted comedy, the end was the part that sold the best when Rose tried to counsel with Sophia and Angela. Rose told a story about her cousin Ingmar. Ingmar liked to impersonate a bird, but his family was ashamed of how different he was, and that feeling of shame blinded them from their love of Ingmar, and the point Rose tried to make was that Sophia shouldn't let shame blind her to the fact she loved Phil, and at the end she comes clean, and says in tears, " I did love him. He was my son. My little boy. But every time I saw him I always wondered what I did, what I said, when was the day that I did whatever I did to make him the way he was." That's when Angela tells her he was a good man, and they make up as Sophia breaks down crying saying, "My baby's gone!" You know, if I could go through the list of topics that Family Guy tried to tackle but botched badly that The Golden Girls got right, we would be going on for a week.

@@wolfetteplays8894 Didn't she say she was having the surgery the next day though or am I remembering wrong? Usually trans people socially transition before medically transitioning, not to mention how long the process of getting hormones and surgery takes. It can take up to 6 years to get surgery depending on where you live, and for good reason considering that dysphoria is so easy to mix up with other mental health issues so you'd have to be living as your new identity for a while before transitioning as well as have therapy, trauma therapy if you need it since a lot of sexual assault victims think they are trans when they aren't, as well as checking to see if any co morbid issues or mental illnesses is causing the identity issues, such as how many autisic people think they're trans due to the identity issues that autism can cause. I get they can't show that within the episode, but they could hace made it so she's been socially transitioned for a while, only living as a man when around her family or something like that; or they could have implied a longer passage of time more than a day since thats not how transitioning works at all :/

I will admit there are some autistic people can have identity issues and may think they are trans even though they may discover later on they are not, I will agree you with on that. But there are some autistic people, like me, that identify as trans and are happy with themselves 🥰. I agree with the statement you made, but I wanted to clear up on some things about autistic people having identity issues, I wasn't trying to attack you in anyway, just wanted to explain some reasons as to why they might have identity issues and explain that some autistic people are trans and are enjoying their lives 🥰

Sorry my comment implied that autistic people are wrong if they are trans or that they're more likely to de-transition, it wasn't my intention. I meant that sometimes, due to autism often causing differences with self perception, some people with autism might perceive themselves as trans when they later on might feel that's not the case and that's why gender therapists will work with the person to determine if transitioning is right for them just in case, but it's very rare to de-transition regardless of if they are autistic or not, and most autistic people who transition live much happier lives after, I really should have mentioned that in my comment. Once again, I'm very sorry, and I hope you have a great day/night 😊

As a Trans person I appreciate your commentary on this episode. While putting an 's' at the end of transgender can read negative, it's clear that you don't mean it offensively. And it is important to recognize that Trans people can make bad choices but coming out is a difficult and sometimes ongoing process. Typically the friends and family of a Trans person would have a lot of time to adjust if only because fully medically transitioning like Ida did in this episode takes a lot longer than is portrayed. I very much doubt she could get everything done at once like this in real life. It seems like coming out to her son came as an afterthought instead of the first step that this would usually be. People do treat Ida badly but not in an accurate dipiction of real life except for the inappropriate questions (which do happen). Honestly this episode really throws me off because it is nothing like real life at all

The Griffins have always been horrible people towards others. They don't learn lessons about basically anything. They clearly don't care for transexuals, they don't need to learn a lesson, the episode looks at both sides of the "issue". Glen is the one who shows the empathy, not Peter or Lois.

  • @JemReviews

    @JemReviews

    8 жыл бұрын

Lois learned her lesson about gay marriage (you may now kiss the guy who receives it), Peter learned his lesson about being a better husband (death lives) so it's not like it's NEVER happened, and quagmire actually has no reason to be empathetic to his dad, that was the whole point, Ida refused to tell him until the day before he got his sex change that he was a transgender, she talks very openly with Peter about how a sex change works (even though she couldnt tell her son and give him any time to adjust to it) and quagmire is not at fault for not accepting it right off the bat when Ida gave him absolutely no time to adjust to the idea, quagmire was not the one who needed to learn the lesson, if anything, Ida was, that's a big portion of what we talk about in this video, macfarlene made claims that it was meant to make transgenders easy to sympathize with when they portray Ida as a very cliched and very, in all honesty, SELFISH person and honestly as a terrible parent who never even bothered to tell her son who loves the hell out of her what she was doing, so the arguement that quagmire is the one who needed to empathetic makes no sense when hes the one who was affected the most by it and given no time to take it all in

I had wondered for a long time why Quagmire's dad was terrible those years ago when it first showed up, and also questioned why some parts of it bothered me as much as it did. (One example being when Peter and Lois discuss with Quagmire on whether or not Dan would be gay if he were to be a woman.) I will agree that Peter asking Ida if she had missed her genitalia or even asking about her breasts are considered tame questions to me considering what Lois has done. Though to explain that and not even give the audience, let alone Quagmire an explanation as to why Dan wanted a sex change seems weak and they could've made it a longer episode. tl;dr : I am glad that you and Shazoozle explained why this episode was done backwards and gave an explanation as to why the episode was considered beyond bad.

What's worse about this episode is that you actually almost CAN sympathize with Ida if not for ONE LINE. I can understand Ida never telling Quagmire if her reason way because she was scared to come out as trans. I'm sure that's relatable for a LOT of transgenders. The problem is she isn't portrayed like that. She just straight-up tells Quagmire the DAY before the surgery, and only AFTER he asked. It's like she wasn't gonna tell Quagmire AT ALL. She's not even saying it gently. Look, I do like how little of a heck Ida gives towards how people think of her, but what I don't like is her complete disregard towards her family. It's like she didnt even consider Quagmire at all. She didnt even TRY to talk to him.

I'm okay with small inmature jokes but when you go to the point where you're pretty much calling trans people disgusting thats kinda too far. Quagmire is the only character who makes any fucking sense for once. I understand his conflicted feelings. Ida should've told him her feelings a while before physically transitioning. The one thing that really pissed me off about this episode that wasn't addressed was how they made it seem like gender reassignment surgery is easy to do and you step out of there fine, transitioning is a lot more then simply inverting your penis into a vagina, it involves hormones, constant doctor consultations and more, there's no way Ida could step out of the operating bed with new hair, female clothes, and large breasts. Before you all tell me about how this is satire Seth himself said this episode was meant to be sympathetic yet there not sympathetic about the physical journey of trans people and they portray it as one operation and you step out good as new. This could've been an episode that maybe involved quagmires dad actually transitioning and glen learning to support and help her, or maybe even be by her side after she had her sex change in the hospital (since in real life Ida would be in severe pain and would be in the hospital for weeks)

Carl Bloke I didn't even know he was involved in that. Yeah, I think even Johnny Bravo would handle a transsexual or even transvestite better than "Family Guy" has and does.

Carl Bloke, true dat, because I loved Johnny Bravo, and it's amazing how the same guy who wrote Johnny Bravo, made two shows I really don't like.(American Dad and Family Guy)But other people still like these shows so I guess it's our Opinions
