QUAD LOCK SMART ADAPTOR - NOT THAT SMART? I FOUND A PROBLEM

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

#QUADLOCK #QUADLOCKMOTO #QUADLOCKREVIEW #RIDERGUIDER
As much as I am a Quad Lock fanboy I'm hoping my feedback will make a great product even better, or maybe they can quickly make a second version of the NEW WATERPROOF 12V TO USB SMART ADAPTOR, because it looks like I've found an issue where this version won't suit everyone.
Here's my honest unpaid review of their quite splendid yet slightly flawed product. They might have to consider developing a new version already. Watch this to find out why it won't work for everyone, unless they change something up.
www.quadlockcase.com.au/
Also see my other Quad Lock reviews including my thoughts on the wireless charging head (Mk1) and the follow up on the Mk2 which addresses all the issues I had. I have Quad Lock items in all aspects of my day to day life, car/van, mountainbikes, desk top, Quad Lock 'run' arm band, belt clip etc. I've also adapted their mounts to attach a camera to a helmet which was a superb success.
Thanks for watching, please comment, share, like and subscribe.

Thanks for the video!. I couldn’t believe it when it wouldn’t switch off so had to trouble shoot the issue and this helps to understand the problem. I bought mine yesterday and fitted it today, spent time to neatly route the wires so it would look great. Will hopefully find a newer version soon to fit that one for my lithium battery model bike.

Just had my first Quadlock product 2 weeks ago, the simple handle bar mount, wanted the charging head but not available for mine. So fitted phone charger in right cubby hole where the TomTom Rider is connected and run the cable through with that. Certainly strong as it stayed on when I didn't. Might not be waterproof but in heavy rain phone can also fit in cubby hole so can stay dry. Good attention to detail to spot that voltage cut off with the two types of battery, nice one.

A year late on this, but thank you for the video! Good to know...I wondered how it was determining when to be on or off since the description doesn't make it clear. Also good to know about LiPo voltage states, will be going that route once the stock one dies. One idea is to make a small splitter harness that plugs in line at the factory power port (cigarette lighter port), with the adapter connected to that. Another would be to see if there's an open spot in the fuse box for an accessory to use as the source since there may be one that's key dependent.

Thank you. I went looking for why my charger would stop/start. Makes sense. It's because it drops below 12.5v (mine sits around 12.23v). But there's a benefit to this.... as soon as the charger stops charging, I know to pop my bike on a trickle charger. So actually, this has come in handy. Thank you!

Does the battery drain can prevented by switching off the only device attached to it (in my case the quadlock wireless charger head)? I can't understand how a passive device (like the smart adaptor) or a device that has been shut off can dry the battery (apologies, I am definitely not an electronics expert)

Probably worth fitting a 12v timer relay. That will shut off X seconds / minutes after power is no longer present on the trigger pin. This timer is constantly reset so when running it stays on. But when you kill power to the relay it waits for X and shuts off.

Quad Lock for some time have 12-24V wireless charging head that is connected directly to ignition switch controled harness and you dont need this adapter. And its cheaper because charging head cost the same as this USB powered one. On my Kawasaki Z900 which have that accesory connectors under the Dash (powered only when ignition is ON), that is much better option. Also, 12,5V is not good even for AGM batteries, they have resting voltage well over 12,5V (up to 13V).

I do not own any Quad-Lock products,… yet. I am shopping for a setup on my motorcycle however. I am a seasoned electronics technician and my understanding for this auto switch is to prevent the wireless charger from draining your battery should you shut off the engine and the phone is still on the charger. This would not happen right away, it would let you charge your phone for a while and then once your bike battery drains to 12.5Vdc it then shuts off. This is intended to save power so your bike will start again later instead of having a dead battery. If you plug in your bike on a trickle charger to keep your battery fully charged, your auto switch probably will never shut off as your battery will never be at the 12.5Vdc level. I don’t know for sure about a lithium battery, but it should still be able to start the bike at 12.5Vdc or even slightly below that. I would like to know how low of a voltage you can start the engine if you had that kind of experience already. I am subscribing to your channel, keep the great content coming!

Hi Chris, THANKS mate. From the info I’ve had from Antigravity my battery can get to below 12v before it cuts off any further drain. Not sure the exact voltage, but it’s still capable of starting the bike. The Quadlock set up is pretty good all up. I just feel they need to make the cut off around 13 volts in this instance.

  • @joelbibby84
    @joelbibby842 жыл бұрын

I think I could maybe run into the same problem, but not lithium battery. My triumph speedmaster needs a minimum of 12.5v to start the bike so ideally a perfect battery at 12.6 and in theory that would drain it to 12.5, maybe not quite enough power to start the engine. Surely it would be easier to go a lot higher because the engines running should always be over 13 surely.

@@tmoney3970 hello mate, no issues since at all. It's so far been a great addition to the bike. I do keep it on a trickle charge if I'm parked up for any length of time but that's not too often. I have one of them digital volt metres (with 2 x USB slots) plugged in to a 12v socket and I keep an eye on the voltage and to be honest I've only seen it drop 0.2 of a volt over a week even when not on charge. Generally sits at 13.2v. It turns the bike over much quicker than my original battery too. Thanks for watching.

Would be nice if someone can do up a guide on how to install the resistors and what rating they should be. I'm not electronically trained, I used an online calculator to calculate dropping 13.1v to 12.5v (to imitate ignition off conditions) but the numbers that comes out dont make sense to me 🤣. Maybe thats too small of a drop, I could most likely drop it from 13.1v to 12.1v come to think of it...

Quad lock must change it a lot. When i park my bike it is always on optimizer so it will never drop below 12.5 so it will stays on and that is not good either. Quad lock should replace the auto with the power giving to the bike like when you switch off your bike and after 15-20 seconds there is no power thats when tha automode should work. Useless for me.

Your missing the point I think... only 12 volts are needed to start your motorcycle. Lithium battery's may rest higher but this smart usb will only allow your battery to drain to 12.5 volts still more than enough to start your bike.. but yet you can charge your phone longer with ignition off. If you ask me this is even better with a litium battery.

Totally, even if they made a new version I would buy the 12 1/2 foot cut off because that means I can walk away from my bike and my phone will still charge for a while, and if the battery voltage gets to 12 1/2 it was shut off

I just found this video as a result of my bike not starting after a week standing. Lithium battery cranked a few times but not enough juice to start at 12.5V… In my view this adapter is not fit for purpose on a lithium battery and needs a switched power source to work, (which defeats its ‘clever’ design). A big fail Quadlock, please do better and at least acknowledge the issue!!

What's wrong with you people? You have a high quality waterproof usb outlet with a 3 way switch on it. Is it beyond your intelligence to switch it off when not in use. The auto function is a bonus but not a deal breaker. Get real.

Not a deal breaker no. Hence why I kept mine, the loom as you say is good. Just doesn’t function with the power down feature with my lithium-ion battery, which was a feature I wanted but now live without.
