Probes look like Brymen stuff. Great video, thanks!
Great review Martin. I really wanted to like this meter as I could really use most of it's features. It looks like it's 90% there, but has some critical flaws holding it back. A colleague of mine recently put me on to the Prova 23 clamp meter (about $350AUD) that he uses for commissioning smart meters for the local supply authority. It's very accurate and clamps the smart meter's CT secondary and calculates it's figures from that. Excellent bit of kit, but not particularly rugged, so it's best kept in its case. Thought you might find it interesting. Anyway, thanks again. I'm really enjoying your videos and appreciate the curiosity/learning approach.

Thanks Darian, I appreciate the post and feedback. Cheers, Martin.
Very nice review. Seems like a good meter except for the screen part
very professional presentation. Many thanks

My pleasure, thanks for the post.
I have watched all your videos, lol and I have found my new hobby to have fun and learn. BTW, you think for $400 Flir would use a scratch resistant screen. Anyway, thank you for all the effort you put into every video.
The test leads are the same than the ones I had on my Bremen DMM. Maybe the meter is OEM built by Brymen too.
hi mjlorton ... i enjoy your youtube channel !! thank you for the information.. do you know what is the difference between cm83 and cm85 ?
Ever get the BT software to connect?
Great video! shame FLIR didn't give you a finished product to review! ;-)
Just watching this video and was struck by an idea for a possible video when you showed the energizers this meter comes with. Perhaps a video discussing the merits and drawbacks of the various types of cylindrical cells (inc environmental concerns, performance, cost over time etc) with particular reference to test equipment? Don't know how many others would be interested in that, but it was something i considered (although not a high priority) when I bought the Brymen BM257 (thanks for that, by the way :D your reviews are why i did ) which i run on Eneloop AAAs.

Thanks for the post. More on cylindrical cells will follow when time allows. Thanks for the feedback!
What would you say the cheapest and most accurate clamp meter for AC/DC. I already have the low current GTC CM100 Thanks!
Thanks Would u recommend flir over fluke, amprobe, Fieldpiece ? Thanks I am looking at their cm74 model with LoZ ( which fluke or amprobe or Fieldpiece dont have yet) ? Thanks
hi sir i need ur suggestion regarding the flir cm83 and uni-t ut233 which u reviewed already both are power clamp meter the flir is ac plus dc but the uni-t ut233 is only ac i am a hobbyist and want to take KW measurement on balance and non balance three phase system will the flir is better in this case budget is not a issue. also i see the spec of the flircm 83 its mentioned in the kw section 10 to 600 kw does it means it will not measure below 10 kw suppose i light bulb which 100 watts or bellow.
This Wattmeter can measure amplifiers output power?
Martin - The Extech Ex845 App is only for the Ex845. The FLIR CM83, DM93, CM78, and MR77 use FLIR Tools App, (Google Apps) which is also used for the FLIR WiFi Cameras as well.

that's true...
can i make 3 phase kw measurements on unbalanced
Hi Martin: Thanks, good review. I am in the market for a good, higher range clamper and this is good information. Cheers, Mark

My pleasure Mark.
Hi Martin, When will you do a review of the Siglent handheld scopes?
@mjlorton

Once my lab is put back together I hope to do that review fairly soon.
I recently bought the FLIR CM83, I really like it, but the software FLIR Tools Mobile is nota that good as the CM83. Do you know if is there a new software to download?

it looks rather like an Appa meter, worth trying the Appa Connect app.
$600 smartphone, 2 years old, been dropped on pavement and used normally...not a scratch on the screen at all. $1000 FLIR E4, same crap plastic screen as shown in video and I scratched mine with a microfiber cloth. Ended up putting my own screen protector on it, kind of ridiculous to have to do it on something that cost so much.
exteck 600amp meter is the one i use and very hard to beat tuff as nails and $120. bucks real working mans meter cont buzzer weak many hard year of service flir not what the working man needs a new scratch on mine i may not even notice
Hmm, I really want to like this meter because of its capability and functionality. Unfortunately, I’m put off by the menu, which is too fiddly for ‘in the field’ use, and I also agree with you about the plastic display screen cover. Another dislike for me is the actual display. I don’t like the lack of real time display when using the peak/average functions. Maybe a clamp meter should just concentrate on voltage, current and power?
It looks like it as a protective plastic on the display. Tried to stick some tape to it and pull it off?
@mjlorton

No..I removed the protective plastic film prior to the review...

mjlorton When you look at the right edge of the display it looks likes small bubbles like a plastic film. The easy scratching also seem to make it look like one. 101% sure it doesn't have an extra film on it? Put a bit of tape to the edge and pull off.
@mjlorton

BersekViking I've just double and triple checked...used tape...but no...it's just a thin, cheap plastic lens over the display...not protective film. If you see my review on the FLIR multimeter...same story. In that case they had dust under the lens. After seeing the video they improved their production line and sent me another meter...no dust...but still the same thin lens.

mjlorton Okay. Thanks for your review by the way. I don't think I'll run out and buy one. :)

BersekViking My pleasure....and just as last check I took a very sharp knife to the edge of the lens...no film. I appreciate being asked to check as I know on camera it does look like a film. Cheers, Martin.
Can i measure PF with this meter?
@APprojection

Yes you can
That scratchy display is really bad on a high end clamp meter like this, which in normal use will be thrown around in a tool bag. Are you sure there aren't any hidden plastic screen protectors that you forgot to peel off?
@mjlorton
10 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan...no hidden screen protector...I removed the protective plastic film prior to the review.
@laharl2k

mjlorton That's why i use to keep the plastic protectors on the screen. They are not too opaque if you are careful and dont leave any air bubble, they are quite scratch resistant and if i ever need to sell something it's as good as new, at least in appearance. I'd just wash it if it has any dust already stuck to it and then put it back on the meter and then tape it so that it doesnt come of not does any dust get in.
Sexy looking meter but what the hell did they do with the battery compartment?? Wouldn't one 9v battery be more reasonable??
Anyone here choose this flir than fluke ?

I actually sold all of my Fluke meters for various Flir meters, no regrets.
Looks like a Clamp Meter with comprehensive functionality but needs fixes to display and Bluetooth.
Flir really needs to get new user interface designers (or should I say get any?). Flir is out of my price range, so I'm no close follower of their products. But the Flir E-series for example also has a few very annoying user interface choices. The non working bluetooth app, the easily scratched display, the cumbersome menu (come on Flir, just use one extra button instead of the "secret" hold-to-do-something) all makes it feel like they rush their products. I know test equipment can get expensive fast, but with these quirks they also are overpriced.

I agree, somebody in the design team is stuck in the 80's regarding look, feel and user interfacing. Can't complain about the rest of the enginerring though. And software, jesus, when are people gonna make really good software, I mean realy bloody useful software for any device and have a raw data stream for of software to help custom software devs etc. When will they wake up to this. At least have the device have usb a drive with basic drivers for all os, just to get it going without having to take 2 hours on the internet on the website. I noted my most recent phone does this, horay!!
Made in China.

I own other Flir meters but not the CM83 however I up until two months ago also owned the Unit-ut233 meter. I can't knock the Unit-T meter but Flir has batter logging options in comparison to the Uni-T with the Flir communicating via Bluetooth (the Flir Tools app has greatly improved) & the Unit-T requiring the optional USB cable (some sellers include the USB to optical interface while others sell it as an extra) physically connected to a computer (or it will take screenshots to internal memory). The Flir allows for the generation of reports once all recording is done & will work with a phone, tablet, laptop or computer. You mention you want to do 3 phase KW measurements, both of these meters calculate the measurement over a 3 phase system which is less accurate. I used to use my Fluke 435 II to get actual 3 phase KW measurements, I now use an AEMC 8336 Power Pad for this type of recording.
