QNAP Backup With HBS 3 - Hybrid Backup Sync 3 - My Backup Strategy

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I will go over how to use the QNAP Backup HBS 3 and cover how I backup, why I backup, and what I backup to. I will go over the difference between backup and sync, as well as go over how to recover data. With the constant threat of viruses, ransomware, and potential hardware failures, there is no excuse not to backup. To make things even easier, the software is already included on your NAS and there are USB and Cloud solutions that are extremely inexpensive.

    Great content and strategy! I am looking into QNap NAS to sync files between two locations. I noticed your remote NAS was on the same local subnet. Can you sync two QNap NAS devices the same way over the internet?

    Hi MIke - really helpful video. Is there a way of having an incremental sync so that anything I add to the NAS gets synced to the USB (a USB expansion box) without having to do a full sync/ backup?

  • @MikeFaucher

    Thanks for the feedback. The "Sync" only updates changes and does not rewrite the entire thing. If you use the backup, the versioning effectively does that as well but you are setting limits to how many versions to keep before it does a whole new one. The sync is easier to deal with for active data and the backup is a better archive tool so you may want to use both depending on the data. Hope that helps.

    If you are still looking for such a solution, we now have Hyper Data Protector to back up VMWare and HyperV VMs. It is on the roadmap for Hyper Data Protector to also back up your Windows PCs System Images.

    Mike - this is a great video. I used HBS3 to one-way sync data to Wasabi using file compression. Do you have a tool or method for downloading the synced data and decompressing it? I cannot find a tool that I can give to a client that is bzip2 compatible. HBS3 does not allow me to sync back and decompress.

  • @MikeFaucher

    @MikeFaucher

    Interesting question. I have never been a believer in compression other than through a direct backup, so I have never actually tried it as all my syncs are native files. Have you tried the file station? It has a compress and decompress option. If that does not work, I would reach out to their tech support which has been fairly good, and ask them what the process is. If they do not respond, let me know, as I might be able to reach someone. Sorry, I could not be of more help.

    Im a bit new in this QNAP setting. Could you explain if i did a weekly backup, monday to friday on a Qnap with 1.5TB of data to an empty QNAP of 17TB, hows the storage usage is calculated? im a bit confuse.

    Backups are incremental meaning only what you change after the initial backup. Sync will keep the same data on both devices.

    Hi Mike, what's your setup for your remote NAS? Is it at a co-location or another house or an office? I'm thinking of using a remote NAS to backup my QNAP NAS but I'm worried about my 10Mbps upload internet bandwidth limit for my home locations. I feel like syncing 22TB+ may take forever on my connection, or it may bottleneck my bandwidth. How has it been working for you?

  • @MikeFaucher

    @MikeFaucher

    Жыл бұрын

    Great question. Currently my remote NAS is inside the house however I did have set up to another location and what I did is do the first sync locally then moved it off site. Once the initial sync is complete, it will only sync the changes which most likely will be not be a problem if you schedule it to run at night. When I did mine, it took from 10 minutes to 2 hours depending on how much I put on that day. Most of the time is was done in less that an hour. I set mine to run daily but that depends of your needs. Thanks for the feedback.

    It may be the specific USB drive. I have not seen it on the external drives i have tested. Try using the Sync instead of the backup and see if that helps.

    mike i use hbs often, but i have an issue when using HBS to backup to an older ts-659 pro II. Basically there is a bug that they didn't fix for that old EOL model so HBS ends up having a connection peer reset which makes the job incomplete and restarts, and it never gets to complete because of this. There is an unofficial fix, but because i am not commandline tech savvy i don't know how to ssh to do it myself. i tried to get helpdesk to help with it, but they refused. i am worried about hbs for older models, cauz if u cant use hbs... u then need alternative. any recommendations?

    I would like to know more about this bug and the cause behind it. This is the first I have heard about this issue. If the issue is in the networking an external adapter can be used. The other option is to do a sync which should be less demanding and low risk.

    Good review Mike. I sync to a local USB regularly and I have a full copy of all data on another USB at my son's house. I don't encrypt anything ... don't know why I would? As an individual I have no info important to anyone else on my NAS. My Pics are PRICELESS but no one else cares. And I worry I'd screw an encryption setting and lose access to the data.

    Sounds like you have a good setup. Encryption is not for everyone but if someone were to take your NAS, you have to OK with someone being able to possibly get the information. As always, thanks for the feedback.

    Do you have 300.000 pictures like me ? I have constantly problems with my Qnap TVS 872XT 16 gb, 2 x 500 gb ssd as cache. When I start to back up, or sync to 2 external HDDs On WD 12 TB and another Seagate 8 TB. It will bring the NAS to a standstill. You can't log in. CPU is high 85% Ram nearly full up to 95 %. Do you run McAfee and have it set to realscan ? But it does not matter on or off. It totally takes over the NAS during and after it finishes, which can be hours, it is accessible again. I also have problems with a Virtual Switch for Ubuntu Station. If enabled and set. I can't find the TVs in Videoststation. When I remove the Virtual switch I can find them again. Been in contact with Qnap support tickets. They acknowledged it and are working on it but it is 2 weeks now, no update. I have also problems with heat on the SSDs. I used to use their hestsinks on the controller chip but they were overheating to 65 degrees to probably 70 degrees. Which means severe throttling. Got custom made heat sinks now installed, it better but still quite hot. 50-63 degrees depending on ambient temperature of room and how much sun is shining. Also I noticed that the Firmware is outdated and I am forced to get them out and put in computer for update with Samsung Magician. I hope that will change it. But cannot say. Am a bit frustrated with Qnap now. Although I have has lots of support from them. It is still not a smooth ride without lots of Alpha, Beta stages of Apps, Firmware. Also HBS has been a nightmare since attack last year. It was working properly before that. I never had the attack despite being on the Internet. But I had my default ports changed and Kaspersky Certificate was encrypting my connections when I had default ports. I have tried the Certificate that is free with them but can't get it to work. Kaspersky was overruling it. It's by default Kaspersky said. Cannot be changed unless I move away from Kaspersky. Overall, I am disappointed with Qnap and its workings. If you want to do lots of things. It seems to be struggling when you do simultaneously things. I spend a lot of money of this thing. Got all bays loaded. At a price of nearly £3000 and online it says you can have 10.000 consecutive connections. I can't even do 2 when backing up and sync. I asked for RMA, but they are holding me off because they say it's software related. Duh ! Overall, as I said, not a happy bunny. It's been 14 months like that now. Copying big files is OK. But hundreds of thousands pictures is a nightmare. That should not be. Very frustrating. I have got close to 5 TB of stuff on it and it takes 2 days or more to back up 3 computers and other stuff. As soon it comes to the pictures it slows down like a snail 🐌 to sync or backup. Anyone can tell me what I do ? How to fix this ? I have set up switch 10gbps, 10gbps in the back of the switch. But can't even get this speed. It's around 3-4 gbps. If you do tests of it inside Putty, Prompt you get around 8 gbps, and if you do it a few times, it goes down to 3-4 gbps. I have no idea what to do and how to resolve and Qnap is also at a loss. Support has not said much lately. And I have several tickets standing out. Asking only if I can put my TV on at 9 am so they can see. Why not believe me in the first place ? I specifically bought a Qnap MS408-2C 10 gbps switch from them and no joy. Also problems with container station. Now I have dozens of Virtual switches in the list which I did not create. Another problem is with Android phones not able to connect to Qbelt VPN. Ipads and IPhone connect, but with Androids no Internet whatsoever. I had to make separate ticket for that to Qnap. Different apartment. Someone responded then tell me they are on holiday until now in end April. Please tell me what I can do ? Am a bit tired now.

    mike for the offsite backup i could probly do that but my idea for doing so would be using the raspberry pi. because it has a nice feature for auto updating, also it's easy to setup. but sadly the prices are bonkers, kinda defeats the idea of being a cheap device when the price is so inflated right now. maybe i will try this in the future for an offsite backup. but right now all i do is so local lan backup from 1 nas to another, and also to a TL-D400S, which seems to be ok for now.

    @@MikeFaucher mike just an update. found out the problem. seems RTRR has an issue. But when i switched to RSYNC it worked. So the solution for me, don't use RTRR in HBS when trying to backup from ts-877 (using the latest HBS) to the ts-659 pro II (using an eol out of date HBS which u cant update). That said, helpdesk was useless for helping with this issue. Lots of time wasted and no real solution or even any indication of effort to help from their end. I'm just lucky that rsync worked.
