QNAP Backup and Restore - HBS 3 to Protect Your Data

Ғылым және технология

In this video, we talk about QNAP's backup and restore solution called HBS 3. This is a full-featured backup solution that supports client-side encryption and scheduling to a variety of cloud services as well as local devices. I will briefly cover the differences between a backup and sync so you can make the most out of your QNAP NAS.

    Thank you for a very clear explanation for what is a very user unfriendly program - it was written by software engineers for software engineers (or experienced system admins) and without this 20 minute video I would have struggled I now understand the difference between sync and back up and why sync is what I wanted. I recently bought a new QNAP NAS as a backup to a venerable but rock solid existing QNAP NAS which I use to store my media library (films, TV, music), family photos, work and emails. I have set up sync to run different schedules: email & work gets sync every couple of hours, other folders once a week. The only thing which I do not understand, is why when I sync the music files, the NAS 2 album folders have a load of extra "AlbumArt{xxxx}.jpg" files which are not present in the original folder

  • @MikeFaucher

    @MikeFaucher

    The reason you are getting the album art is most likely from the Multimedia console from music albums or vidoe. Goto the multimedia console and look at all the settings . I am sure you will find something there, BTW, I just finished a part 1 of going through every basic setting and I am working on part 2 which will cover things like this. Hope that helps.

    Hi Mike. Great video. When I create a backup job from my TS453Be to my TS421 it doesn't create the backup in the backup format, i.e. no .qdff folder and subfolders as per your example. The backed up files are in their original format and structure just like a sync job. However, when I back up the same job to an external drive it does use the backup format. Any idea why the backup does not behave like a backup when backing up to the TS421? Thanks.

    The difference is the "DeDupe" option. You have enabled on the external drive and on the NAS backup. Great question.

    The best way is to set them up as high availability. There is a technical brief on how to do that on their web site. You effectively create hardware redundancy. Your hardware (NAS Units) have to the requirements but it would be the best way. Anything else will be a straight backup.

    Hi Mike,thanks for helping me to understand HBC 3. Question: I have HBS 3 Hybrid Backup on an external 10GB drive,approx 1TG backup file. I have tried restoring it with QuDedup Extract Tool, but I cant extract My backed-up (1TG)files QuDedup Extract Tool only extracts a snapshot of the newly installed Data Volume, empty Download, multimedia home and Public Folders. I cant extract any of my backed-up files from the HBS 3 Hybrid Backup .QDFF file

  • @MikeFaucher

    @MikeFaucher

    2 жыл бұрын

    The backup QDFF files are intended to be recovered by HBS 3 and the process works better. Personally I do not use dedupe. I know it saves space but there is a small room for error. Also you have to make sure that all your folders you want to back up are selected. If you have the space, I would recommend using sync instead of backup. Synced files are directly accessible and are not compressed. THis is the best way if you have the room otherwise use back without the debup. Hope that helps. In case you have not seen them I have done a couple of videos on sync including cloud sync. Here is a link to one of them: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aGeL2cl7iNyycrg.html

    To backup to a remote nas assuming it is on the same local network, setup RTRR with the same password on each side. If theyare are offsite, you need to setup a VPN first.

    Great Video, well done. Question: I have a 2 Bay Qnap. I am only using 1 bay with a 4TB WD-RED. The OS, Virtual Machines, Docker Containers, Applications, FILES, etc are all store in that 1 Drive. In have backups of the files in other External media, so if the Qnap dies I have acess to my files (covered there). I wanted to replace my 4 TB Western Didital Red "spinning rust" with a 4 TB SSD from Samsung. How do I do that, without having to reconfigure the entire Qnap NAS(installing all VMs, Applications, etc)? Can I "clone" my WD drive to the SSD and then remove the WD. Will Qnap accept the new cloned SSD drive and work like nothing happened?

    @@MikeFaucher I've tried Clone and it wont be recognized in the NAS as the NAS allocates a unique ID for that specific drive and the ID cannot be used on a different drive. Its a real pain in the A#$. I ended up doing all from scratch and the data took 4 days to copy over using mapped network drives of the NAS from the Ext USB since using HSB app in multiple jobs the NAS fell over on every job due to lack of resources and a fixed internal non expandable 1GB Memory and ran 7 times slower than via mapped drives. Yes, you can if you set it up as a standalone drive. If the drive is exactly the same as the one in your NAS, why not set it as a mirror? That way if you have one drive fail, the other will just keep working.

    This may be the way they are explaining it. You do not pick a network directly but rather the device(s) you are backing up and the destination when could be on an entirely different network. As long as there is connectivity, it will work. Hope that helps.

    I am using the backup function to backup a large library of movies to an attached USB drive. I'm familiar with acronis so was a bit surprised that you can't restore single files......only the whole folder. Maybe using a synch job is a better option although I guess it will use more space?
