Many people suffer from various back related issues. This can include:
- low back, sacrum pain
- hip pain
- mid back tightness
- upper back tension and pain
- chronically tight back muscles
- sciatica (true or false), pain going down the leg
- general back weakness
In fact back related problems are one of the most common reasons for doctor visits.
As with any health issue, it is important to consult with your doctor and/or primary health care provider so you can help yourself using as many tools as possible, and find what works for you.
This simple Qigong exercise and routine can be very helpful for your back and with overall health.

Spinal Twisting is one of those Qigong movements that looks so simple, that it’s hard to believe that it would actually be helpful!
But, the gentle turning is very good for increasing blood and qi (or chi) circulation through the spine, the back muscles, and all the soft tissue and fascia throughout the back.
From a Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, this exercise helps to stimulate the:
- Du meridian
- Ren meridian
- the Urinary bladder meridian
- the spinal cord and the nerves that radiate from it
- and ‘extra acupuncture points’ located around the spine
Give this routine a try and see how you feel!
The nice thing about this practice is that it is easy to fit into a busy day. You can practice this if you have been sitting for a long period, if you feel tight, or you just need to refresh your qi!
I'm Jeffrey Chand, an acupuncturist, practitioner of Traditional Chinese medicine, and Qigong instructor.
I am incredibly passionate about sharing simple Qigong practices because I have directly witnessed how helpful it can be for a variety of health issues, prevention, emotional/mental health, and even spiritual health.
The style that I try to present is simple but effective, because it is based on several Qigong traditions, clinical experience, physical therapy, traditional and modern medicine, and from working with many people from a variety of backgrounds.
This style can be practiced if you are an absolute beginner and if you already have experience in Qigong or Tai Chi.

I discovered you on You Tube, and have found a knew lease of life. I am an 80 year old widow. I have always been fit and athletic, I now have Arthritis which prevents me from doing so much. I have been following all your series and now feel so alive and energetic. The breathing exercise is fantastic my bones and muscles have woken up. I am managing a 3 mile walk a day. I just want to say this: I play guitar for a living and (as with most serious guitarists) my many hours of practise etc has left me with lower back pain. I have tried everything but your exercises are beginning to help me. I have practised yoga so I have developed my own routine (based on yours with added exercises). I can now bend over to do work on my house without as much pain and for a longer period of time. I just wanted to thank you.

This was really nice! My PT encouraged me to try, to get a gentle way to move my body with fibromyalgia. As a total beginner I felt it was easy to follow.
