Qatari Royal Guard m/71-76 Valmet

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenweapons.com
The Valmet company in Finland made excellent AK-type rifles for the Finnish Defense Forces, but also offered a variety of designs on the international commercial market. The Valmet was a very expensive rifle for a AK, however, and only a few significant commercial sales were made. One of these was a batch of rifles for Qatar, which included perhaps 50 (the exact number is unclear) made with fancy wooden furniture and nickel-plated for use by the Qatari Royal Guard. These were the m/71-76 pattern, with the 76 indicating Valmet's stamped aKM-type receiver. The m/71 was a rifle pattern which reverted back to traditional AK-style open notch sights instead of the rear aperture adopted by Finland on its rk/62. The m/71 was not adopted by the Finnish military, but is was chosen by Qatar, and also imported into the United States in semiauto-only form.
Many thanks to Sako for providing me access to film this unique AK variant in their reference collection!

    After the war, Sako was owned by the Finnish Red Cross and temporarily produced civilian products like lipsticks and lighters to avoid being demanded as war reparations by the Soviets. Apparently, Nokia had a 50 % stake in Sako until 1999.

    The book 2 in the series "Arma Fennica" "Sotilasaseet / Military arms by Timo Hyytinen tells the story of these guns. If my memory serves me, Quatar asked an offer for gold plated guns so they decided to offer these instead. They were meant for the Royal Guard, hence the emblem. It was specifically required that the rifles need to be fully functional like a standard assault rifle. The flash hider was removed due to looks. The rifles and the equipment - three magazines, tools were delivered in wooden box for each gun with velvet red upholstery. The belt was of white leather. But please search for the book. :)

  • @TexasSpectre

    @TexasSpectre

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@TheSuspectOnFoot They seem to have struck a very interesting balance there, if so. They wanted the Royal Guard's arms to look nice, but they could have gone with a full polished chrome as many countries did. Instead, they went with a matte nickel plate that doesn't reflect like chrome - which means the user will be less distracted as well as less obvious to the enemy. That said, the British Royal Guard had far more immediate and real threats than the Qatari Guard faced in that era, so giving them full on combat arms isn't a bad idea. The IRA was no joke. However, the L85... not such a good choice.

    ...my memory might serve me bit wrong, but was it Abu Dabi who actually requested that their Valmet AKs should be made of pure gold. I recall the folks at Valmet convinced them that that would not work out so well due to extra weight and softness of the gold 🙂 - Hence the gold plated versions instead. Had a change to hold both of these guns in my hands once at the reference collection when it was held by Riihimäksi Hunting Museum. Had to watch out my drooling while holding them 🤗 We actually used wool gloves to keeps the guns in pristine condition.

    That reminds me of a story about the war reparations Finland was paying to the Soviet Union. They included some boats/ships among other stuff and of course a boat big enough needs to have a sauna in Finland. Nothing wrong with that. However, the Soviet representatives responsible for the boat apparently demanded that the sauna benches should be made of copper instead of the traditional wood benches. Of course the reasoning wasn't that copper would make a particularly good sauna bench (rather they'd strip the more expensive copper for their own profit or something like that), but still the Finns had to convince them that this wasn't an appropriate demand...

    It's a one of those very interesting variants, that almost nobody in finland has no clue either. There's quite many small-number arabic deals and trials and such that almost nobody could keep track on everything, but the people in charge at regions of considerable wealth did recognize the nigh-on indestructibility of AK platform and manufacturing quality of Sako/Valmet. There has also been quite a lot of controversy lately about sniper/marksman rifle deliveries to certain arab nations, but that again serves as another proof of manufacturing quality. War is a nasty thing, but for weapons manufacturers it's "business as usual".

    The original Qatar contract was "gold or nickel plated". I have seen some experimental gold plated parts in Jyskä factory near Jyväskylä, where the plating plant was located then in 1977. All foremen of the plant had gold plated car keys... I have not seen an assembled gold plated rifle, but the parts and the fancy dark wood furniture parts were gorgeous. Finally, the contract was delivered in satin nickel, with dark wood and white parade slings.

    Thanks for the video. I don't think I've ever seen even a color picture of the Qatar Royal Guard rifles, much less a video! In his book on the Finnish Arms Industry, "Asesuunnittelua Suomessa," the author Timo Hyytinen recalls visiting Qatar ahead of the sale and being posted up in the capital city's second-fanciest hotel, which is described as more or less a rathole and remarks at the huge disparity between the wealth of the Emir and the poverty of his people. He does also briefly mention that Qatar actually held selection trials in 1975, a Kalashnikov variant being desired over other unspecified offerings from the USA, France, and UK. He also mentions a standard run of assault rifles being delivered to the Qatar special forces, but the regular army was supplied with standard combloc Kalashnikovs because the procurement chief figured that they didn't need to shoot as accurately as the Royal Guard or Special Forces units!
