Q and A - Adventures in Democracy (Panel Includes Richard Dawkins) (Part 3/6)
Aired Monday 8 March, 2010
The Q&A panel includes: Richard Dawkins, Patrick McGorry, Rabbi Jacqueline Ninio, Tony Burke and Julie Bishop.
Here are the questions our panel faced this week. Tell us what your answer would be or what you think our panellists need to say.
Evolution/God
Arthur Lith asked: Can one be a believer in God as well as a believer in the theory of evolution?
What do you think?
Religion and Psychology
Dan Anderson asked: Do you think that a belief in the transcendent (whatever that might be, but including 'God') is important within a healthy human psychology, or do you regard it as a symptom of mental illness?
What do you think?
Areligion/Atheism/Santa Claus
Cassandra Devine asked: Why do you feel the need to express your views so stridently when they're not always welcome? Isn't it rather like going around to playgrounds and telling children that Santa Claus isn't real?
What do you think?
Religion-Schools
Renee Brasier asked: You are clearly against the teaching of creationism in the context of Science, but do you think there is any value in teaching religion in schools?
What do you think?
Morality
Hamzah Qureshi asked: Considering atheism cannot possibly have any sort of absolute morality, is it not then an irrational "leap of faith" (which atheists themselves so harshly condemn) for an atheist to decide between right and wrong, considering they have no absolute moral standard?
What do you think?
Intelligent Design
David from Victoria asked: Do you believe intelligent design should be part of the science curriculum, taught alongside evolution? Or do you believe it is non-scientific and should be relegated to the rubbish bin?
What do you think?
Religion and Gays
Andrew Kollington asked: Senator Fielding - you are courageously open about your religious and moral beliefs. As a believer in God, do you accept the Bible as the word of God and those who participate in homosexual behavior ought to be shunned or be put to death as the Bible demands? Or do so called moderate Christians' simply choose to ignore the word of God in this case, picking what passages they feel best suit our social trends?"
What do you think?
Asylum Seekers
Dennis Colombo asked: Both Labor and the Coalition have been severely criticised for their handling of the boat people asylum seekers. I would like to hear the views of the non-politicians on the panel about how they would go about it. Perhaps they can lead our politicians to a fresh approach!
What do you think?
Afterlife
Web question from Patrick OShea of Queensland: Do you wish for or indeed hope for an Afterlife?

thanx a lot Dawkins
Richard Dawkins NAILED it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bertrand Russell would have been very proud of you Richard. :)
I commend Dawkins for sitting through most of this without raging.
Richard's answer on 'absolute morality' is absolutely brilliant. Would love one religionhead to refute just one of those points.
The amount of reason here brings tears to my monocled eyes. And dear Steve, different people are different, everyone has their own opinions and beliefs, but as evidence by you; that doesn't make them any less stupid.
Man, that last comment by Dawkins kicked ass.
Damn Dawkins was on fire. So bright and clear argumentation. World would be a dim place to live without scientist lighting the world for us to see.
Richard Dawkins just kick arse :-D
I find it ironic that out of everyone in the panel, the rabbi included, Dawkins is the only one who doesn´t seem uncomfortable talking about religion.
lol the Aussie guy on Dawkins' right's answer to every single question is "DIFFERENT PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT", and he keeps getting laughed at, that is so awesome.
Everyone is being so "well this side is right, but this side should be respected too" wah wah. Dawkins is the only one to take a stand and say what he really thinks.
I wonder who put together this panel.. Along with Dawkins there are 3 that try to avoid being asked questions, an old woman who doesn't appear to have thought about this issue ever before and a female rabbi who talks nonsense (but with a very charming smile).
@chebob2009 I'm not sure that would have had the same 'impact', or whether the 'thrust' of the argument would have been as effective.
@WillStanton First time I see the guy and I can't help but smile whenever he gets room to talk. I have never seen a more politically correct politician haha. His point of view whenever asked is basically "LOOK I believe everything is personal and everyone is right and no one is wrong and I try so hard not to anger anyone", with that nervous manner and sheepish smile of his :)
That answer was the perfect answer (if there is such a thing). Good job Dr. D
HELP!!! I live in the state of Texas, I'm ashamed to admit! Here in Texas, the Republicans have come out against critical thinking, or Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in our public and private schools, because, they believe it undermines "parental authority" and Texas schools are also becoming a pipeline to prisons because of this. I'm so glad I'm 61 years old and don't have to attend any Texas school. But, I fear for the younger generations. HELP!!! GET ME OUTTA HERE!!!
@DistantJ Dawkins' left.
yes that was fucking brilliant...
Haha the questioner at 06:53 thinks he's so clever...as soon as Dawkins took his glasses off I knew it was all over!
7:10 Once Dawkins takes off his glasses....you're fucked.
If there is any blessed son of god (lol)who has the transcription of this ,pleeeease!
hahah couldn't agree more jamespfp
that's what i was thinking =)
from 7:00 and out. Pure ownage.
@Lennac True! People critisize him as being strident but the fact is the difference between he and the majority of public figures is the lack of hypocrisy. The other extreme is the Fielding guy, oh he's not offensive at all, but does anybody care about what this hypocrite has to say?
at the end of the day/australians have their own opinion/people will come to their own conclusions/
@PaulTheHeritic His evasiveness suggests that he's being disingenuous for fear of public disproval. As an American, I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see him dodge questions of irrational belief - I almost forgot he was a slimy politician. In America politicians behave similarly, but it's the overemphasis of personal faith and the appeasement to creationists and the religious aristocracy from the left that's disingenuous and cringeworthy. The Australian public must be awesome.
3:43... Julie just nods... "I knew he was gonna say that... now I'm gonna own him "...
@billbenblue But it still applies though. You're only problem with that word is that it's "harsh." I could have said that they were unintelligent, irrational, naive, human beings with no common sense and it would have said the exact same thing as "stupid." The point is that kids are not "smart" or capable of making informed, intelligent decisions. Arguing that they CAN, is ignorantly appealing to emotion and poisoning the well. As the person on the panel was doing.
Why do they all (except Dawkins) find the need to start their answers with pointless statements? It's so annoying, "I believe that there are many religions", "I believe people are all different". They always end up saying, "stuff is different" which is such a pointless thing to say.
★★★★★
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Dawkins fan but I wish the audience stopped making such noise every time he opens his mouth. Good job on not taking fundamental nutjobs for a change, a discussion with more level-headed theists is far more interesting.
@comanchio1976 He may as well have got a strap-on out...
Absolute morality: Men are able to marry and have sex with a 9 year old girl, and nobody can EVER change the Shariah law to make it others. Whereas in the UK where marriage to children used to be legal it is now illegal. No, no absolute morality for me, thanks.
i wonder if the guy with the glasses next to dawkins has any strong opinion of his own and if he does (which would be a surprise), does he have the courage to back it up logically, without being afraid to arouse opposition? he behaves like a mental drifter or smt
Rabbi Jacqueline Ninio is good besides Richard Dawkins.
I got a blood rush when Dawkins took his glasses off at 7:10. I reckon he did too. What a stupid question, and one which he gets asked ALL the time. Especially from muslims, who have very low morals.
This is a great example of how most 'religious' people have no clear understanding of what they actually believe in because they prefer to have others 'think' for them without any type of personal search or questioning...whereas, people like Richard/Christopher are examples of making their claims based on their own clearer understanding of what they speak...whether true or not? at least they are solid in their explanation, research, facts, knowledge, etc the rest are IDIOTS trying to be clever!
the rabbi is cute n.n
@agnosticcc just wait... He get's totally owned(by Bishop) by the end of this and just looks agro the rest of the program.

Please tell me what she says to supposedly “own” him. She made incredibly shallow and vacuous points which Dawkins refuted with ease.
