Groundhogs are in the squirrel family and live in burrows. Gardener Peter Richards gives some options for dealing with them. If you have a small area, you can use an electric fence. Other options include fences, carbon monoxide generators and shooting.

Install many stick in the ground traps . That stab them in the body when they go by. Insert water hoses on 1 side of the yard. In 2 places. Drop in about 20 golfer gasser smoke bombs , on the other side, light fuse drop-in hole , cover hole with a board, and a big weight. At the same, time turn on the water . No bait, ever. Now at year 15 with while using no bait at all, but using double, powered door, wire trigger traps, quick, easy, with a best year of 142. Set the double door Comstock Custom Cage trap at the den with a nose cone to join the den to the trap. You will catch coming and going, catch few non-targets, while there is no maintenance.
