I used to walk home after a Saturday evening meeting. The walk would start late evening and I wouldn’t make it home until after sunrise. I got a ride home once and it felt so different. There was no connection to the land. No singing birds in the middle of the night next to the well lit tunnels. There wasn’t time to think or listen to what was around. The ride was very comfortable. The friend has a nice car that was warm with heated seats even. Ones eyes were focused on what was visible in the headlights and darting around to check for wildlife that may venture out. Walking, a slope has little effect other than to change your perspective or change your gait but in a car you hear the downshifts and the shifting weight. That routine was good. Though I walk today, it’s not nearly as far.

thanks for sharing this reminds me of long walks when the busses stop running in chicago, be it from snow, time,, delays etc. feeling the humid cold air and snow hit your face while your insides are as warm as can be

I’ve noticed that people in cars look down on walkers. They make economic judgements based on the perspective that you’re not in a car, so you obviously are a less than desirable character. Probably why people left you alone. Found a container once with a bag of weed and a pipe. Walkings fun...

Dan, I cannot agree more. I left the country for the city not long ago. I sold one of our family cars and now walk to the train station. After driving for years and now walking to a train station I feel the certain judgement in some kind of way. Never the less ,I hear the birds singing and see flowers growing!

I've recently moved to the city and the last answer you gave about people slowing down around you sounded familiar. Normally people are content to pretend everyone else around them doesn't exist. It's crazy that just the lights of cars slowing down around you can make you feel so powerful, that I think it says a lot about our social interactions (or lackthereof) with those around us.

I wanna walk to work now. It would be between 5 and six hours. There is a difference just in driving a car vs. a motorcycle. on the motorcycle you can feel the air change in lower areas and when you get near water. Never done a long road walk. It's got to be easier than backcountry hiking. I'm gonna do it on a day I have the option to work or not. take an Uber home the day before and leave a vehicle there.

Hi Beau. How do you advise women who want to go on these kinds of adventures? What kind of self-defense tools and techniques, other than general situational awareness, would you want your wife or kid or students to have before setting off on a solo walk such as this? What do you think women should do to prepare to trek through secluded regions, sleep outside, and scavenge in out-of-the-way areas?

My two cents: Not every encounter requires the use of lethal force. Learn alternate ways to defend yourself or disable an attacker. And then, PRACTICE! Theory is ineffective in a physical scenario that your body and brain have never experienced. Other than that, learn a little about your route beforehand and scope out any potential danger zones or safe zones along the way. You don’t HAVE to sleep alone, outside in some areas, but maybe you could (even maybe you should!) in others! 😁 P.S. I’ve always thought packing a small, waterproof hammock expands sleeping options, and provides other useful functions, such as a shelter, a groundcover, a makeshift bag or raincoat. P.P.S. Also, being/sleeping higher up makes your items/you less obtainable/vulnerable while you’re sleeping.
