Q&A: How Do I Keep the Curl Pattern from My Wet Hair? | Hair Rules

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Our Texture Guru Dickey explains how to regularly achieve the definied curl pattern from wet hair. Cowashing, Wash N Go styling, and shampoos without suds are all important factors here, especially for people with wavy to kinky hair textures (3A-4C hair).

DICKEY'S NOTES: This is a good question because I find that a lot of women once you go natural I think the challenge has been that is difficult to find out methods that have been suitable to your texture, so you end up doing alternative things like twist outs, or other styles that are not necessarily the easiest ones. The great thing about being natural and having a curl pattern when it's wet is that those are just small indicators. Whenever you have conditioner in your hair and it's wet, or you have shampoo in your hair, you see curls. The problem is that you can never capture those curls or know what to do, so that's kind of the missing link in going natural. How do I capture this great curl pattern that I see when my hair is super wet with either shampoo or conditioner.? That's always exciting to me because the answer is simple...it simply means that you capture that curl pattern with your favorite styling product.
Hopefully all you naturals are avoiding shampoos that have suds because they are so damaging for your hair. I am talking about the sulfate free ones as well. Because those textures are naturally drier, they will never need anything that has suds be it sulfate free or not. These non-sudsing cream shampoos of course Hair Rules Daily Cleansing Cream Moisturizing No Suds Shampoo is just the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to natural hair. It's a cream shampoo that allows you to de-tangle while you are shampooing and it doesn't dry out your hair, so your hair is left soft, and de-tangled, and freshly cleansed. That's your go to weekly shampoo and that of course helps to bring out the curl pattern.
Once you're finished you have your Hair Rules Quench Ultra Rich Conditioner for textures that are naturally drier or kinkier or curlier textures. Once you put your conditioner in you should be able to see a great curl pattern because soft hair is the only hair that wants to curl up which is why you only see curls when you have conditioner on. So after shampooing with your cream shampoo you want to use your quench conditioner or if you're co-washing you'll use your quench conditioner daily to simply rinse and condition and use your quench conditioner to co-wash. That method of co-washing and wash and wear styling helps to transform your texture to one that is soft and elongated and curlier, it will just get curlier and curlier. Of course you are looking to find out how you capture that curl pattern. These are small indicators, when you see a curl pattern when the hair is wet and has conditioner on it that's just a small indicator that's where you are going to apply your styling products. Again, your conditioner helps to prep your hair which softens it and de-tangles and elongates.
The Hair Rules Kinky Curling Cream and the Curly Whip also will condition the hair. Make sure you use enough. You can't overuse these products. You might use a handful of it or a golf-ball size amount depending on your thickness of hair. You might use more if your hair is longer. Use your product as a tool. Use your styling product to saturate your hair. Once you've worked that product through in a manner de-tangles and stretches out, I like to add a little water sometime so the hair really hangs and then set it. Whether you want it defused, sit under a portable hood dryer and if you don't want to do it in the morning than do it at night and stretch it out afterward. You've got to work it into your lifestyle. Wash and wear styling also allows you to go forward with a lot of versatility styling ,whether you're going to do twist outs, braid outs or straight styling - you don't get heat damage because you're doing a lot of wash and wear on top of hair that is thoroughly moisturized through the method of wash and wear styling.

I TRIED SO MANY PRODUCTS. On a whim bought a $5.00 bottle of Aussie conditioner and $3 Dippity Do Sport Gel. Put the gel in SOAKING wet hair. It worked. I damn near cried. Get a lot of crunch but a shake and a scrunch and it’s good. Sometimes simple is better.

I have to say it is soooo refreshing to hear a salon owner talking about and assisting natural hair women with tips and products! Many shy away from even taking us as clients and those who do, try and take us back to flat ironing or chemical treatments thanks for showing your a well rounded "Professional" cosmetologist.

Anthony Dickey is educated, confident, well articulated and infuses inspiration for any hair texture desiring this method and education for everyone in his delivery. I'm kinda ashamed to say that after 8 years of being free of ANY chemicals have I found the right way for wash and wear hair and that Dickey delivers true education of how to for wash and wear hair-the right way. After tons of youtube videos, noone really had it truly "correct" and if they did, they were fortunate. It's ironic in my journey that a salon-centric forum gave the best advice after getting away from salons because of how they seemed to be disrespectful and clueless to hair period. Thanks Dickey!!!!

Love this video. It ultimately helped me to ditch the typing sys and embrace wash n go styling. I have hair that has waves, curls, coils of multiple sizes and when dry w/out product most of my hair is frizzy and undefined. Typing your hair when bone dry gives you a false sense of what your hair is capable of doing. I thought the only styling options were twist outs, braid out etc. using this method has helped me add wash n wear styling to my repertoire. Thanx for this video Mr. Dickey.

This is great advice, and I hope those who wish to capture their natural curls at least gives it a try. I have been natural for 5 months, but continued to wash with a sudsing shampoo. It wasn't until a month ago that I stopped. I was using both a sudsing and non-sudsing and noticed a very nice curl pattern when I used the non-sudsing. The light bulb came on; the suds was drying my hair out. No more suds for me! My curls are popping and it doesn't get hard & dry.

Thank you for the encouragement. I did it Several times (because I had a week off & it takes HOURS to dry) & the results were the same. The texture didn't change with half a bottle of conditioner in it. So even though it was "manageable" nary a curl pattern could be seen or felt. My mother had the same issue and my grandson has the same resistant hair type. Trust me, I'm glad the method works for my other sisters out there. I'm all for Natural when able or desired.

Robin Smith get a clarifying shampoo! You probably already have sealing things on it from before you were using the method. Deva Curl has an incredible one called Buildup Buster. I would bet you have some left over silicone or something else blocking your hair from getting the moisture from the conditioner down inside the shaft.

Maintaining curl pattern when hair is dry. I will definitely purchase his products and I'll try to get a hair appointment in the very near future. The first thing that comes to mind when I'm viewing is educational videos is QVC & HSN. Dickey - have your team look into this. I'm a huge fan of both! If Carol's Daughter can get a deal on HSN, I'm sure you can as well. Be Blessed!

Hi. I tried the wash and go method and it was a success. Had tried it before and it didn't work. Thank you. However, waking up th next morning my hair is hard and dry flattened to my head because it's not long enough to pull up or back. How do you make it look nice the next morning? I added oil to help loosen it and that didn't work. Trying to find something besides twisting. That's a lot of work. Be blessed and thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

My hair stays wet for ages!!!! It will still be dry in the middle for about two days. I have tons of hair with tons of volume. I always get overcharged at salons because they use about 4 oz of product on me. This really makes washing or wetting my hair on a daily basis a no go. Also my curls never get a chance to fully set. I've tried diffusing but I'm probably doing it wrong or need to buy a different diffuser because I end up with a frizzy hair ball. My hair has tons of volume so I feel like diffusing makes it worse. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Hi Dicky! Thanks for all your fantastic information. I have been natural for 20 years, in locks for 18 of those years. I big chopped my locks in 2013. I have medium length 3C/4A low porosity hair. Ive been doing my wash and go weekly for almost a year and I believe I have mastered it. But this last time (yesterday) something happened that elongated my curl pattern and reduced my beautiful shrinkage (Yes, I love my shrinkage because it makes my hair curlier fuller and bouncier). So here is what I did this time: 1) prepoo overnight with coconut oil, 2) co wash w/as i am coconut cowash, 3) deep condition with shea moisture 10 n 1 masque, 3) as i am leave-in, 4) curling jelly. 5) air dried but no shrinkage and more frizz than usual. So this morning I tried to fix it. I rinsed thoroughly with water, saturated it with tea tree tingle, waited, rinsed, raked a little jojoba oil through to seal, then raked my eco styler through, air dried and still no shrinkage. My question Dicky is what happened to my shrinkage and what can i do to get it back? Please help!

Yep, product build up. Clarify with ACV & water mix. 1 part ACV to 3 parts water. Then wash and condition as normal.

How do you combat single strain knots in natural 4c hair? Does it need a trim?

Thanks so much Dickey. I attend Taren's hair event in Dec and received gift bag. Finally used the Quench Conditioner and finish cream. Its been 7 months since bc and my curly afro looks so cute. Its imperative to wet and apply conditioner daily when wearing wash n go. Will applying water alone reactivate conditioner for next day hair. Please advise. India

I use creme of nature and for some reason, my hair curls up more and is more detangled with the shampoo in than it does with the conditioner. Why is that? Does that mean I would just apply my styler after the shampoo instead? Also, does it have to be a styler or can it be a moisturizing lotion?

I followed everything on my daughter hair but when it started drying, it just reverted. I ended up damping it and did finger coils. We were disappointed, she really wants to do a wash and go. we don't have same texture.

Hi Dicky, what would you do for someone like me who has two different hair textures keep her curl pattern. From the crown of my head back is wavy, curly and much more looser than the hair that is from the crown forward. That hair is much kinkier and thicker. The curls in the back last much longer and are more define than the front. Please help. Thank you in advance.

Hi. Right now on my scalp looks and feels like it is in bad condition. I feel scabs on my scalp and my scalp is very itchy. After I use regular shampoo. After about 1 day I see dandruff and experience itch. I seem to be struggling trying to get my scalp clean. My question is should I then start my week with a sulfate free shampoo just to try and remove the scab and dandruff and then every other day clean with water and then conditioner and capture my curls with my favorite styling product? My biggest struggle is my scalp.

She is only 12 so we are not doing a big chop. Can you please advise on healthy hair tips for her transitioning to natural hair.

I'm 33 years old I've had a relaxed since i was 8 years old. I never knew my hair was curl and dry. I just transition for a year. A week ago i cut the last of the relaxed hair off and I'm stuck. I have small curls in the back and very loose one on the top and some spots that only curl on the ends. I don't know what products to use. all I know is that when I had a relaxer my hair will not go past my shoulders but when I was younger my hair grew past my back down to my elbow. my envision is to have healthier stronger hair. but I don't know what to do seriously.
