Hi Joe, I've been watching all of your videos wrt the fence/gate project. I scoured the internet to find what I was looking for (a plan in my head) wrt dimensions and timber sizes. I came across your videos and said that is what I've been looking for! You did a magnificent job and thank you for taking the time to set up the videos! I have a question about the above and below ground treated timbers. I understand the panels are cedar pickets but what about the rails and posts for the 2x4, 4x4, 6x6? I noticed they have a brown kind of tinted stain. Most of the pressure treated I see has that awful green tinge to the wood, mostly with the pine. What is the name of the timbers and where did you purchase them? Are they pine or cedar treated? Thanks!

When I was doing this project I went to Home Depot, Lowes, and local lumber yards. I noticed in this area they all pretty much carried the same lumber and from the same mills. I think lumber can be a regional material. I’m in the Pacific Northwest and the pressure treated lumber out here is typically Hem Fir and the treatment has a brown color. If your area has a green treatment, you could use a non-transparent stain, to cover it up or you could use Cedar for the posts and rails.

    Why not use screws?

I don’t like the look of screw heads on pickets. Regular nails can pop out over time. By using ribbed nails, they won’t tend to pop out and they look better. Ribbed nails are also cheaper than screws. For the rails screws or the twisted nails, I used would work. The top decorative rail did start to twist, so I added some screws from the top to hold them in place. I think screws and nails have their advantages. Whether or not you choose screws or nails it’s best to find the right nail / screw for the given application.
