PUTTING THE STOP TO A WILDFIRE!!!

The Minnesota DNR called for a dozer to help fight a forest fire way out in the wilderness. So we loaded up the Komatsu dozer on the Peterbilt lowboy to go help the firefighters.

I'm a former Forest Fire Boss and Helitack member with the B.C. Forest Service in western Canada, and I can assure everyone that the bulldozer is of paramount importance in getting a fire under control and out. The work they do, the hours they put in, and the dangers they face is by far one of the toughest jobs any operator will face. I've had dozers catch fire or rollover on steep ground a few times, but luckily the operators weren't hurt. One thing I'm surprised I didn't see in the video is your designated line flagger, who usually goes ahead of you to lay out a ribbon trail to follow, especially at night like that. Thanks David for your work and for sharing that video, much appreciated.

Thanks for the comment Jeffrey. Bet you've got some great stories. Actually had 3 different guys flagging during the fire. One of them was so exhausted that he was puking so we had to get him out of there. I asked them to stay far enough in front of me that they were safe if I was pushing trees over. Thanks again.

You're a good guy, Charley Brown Haley! Been in that deal a little and it's nothing but hammer and MORE hammer! You had the right rig for getting there as fast as you needed to. Nothing like a 3406 when you need one. Fire Captain Tom will be jumping up and down in his recliner CHEERING! A guy I worked with had a plow for fire lines he hooked to his dozer but we never needed it. I'd rather have a blade and be done with it and all the work you did to the Komatsu paid off right there. Haters are gonna hate David, just the nature of the beast. I have been a volunteer fireman for 40 years and also a volunteer member of the wildfire strike force. There is never any wasted time when you are on a fire line, even if you are sitting there doing nothing. Your brain is going 100 miles an hour, thinking of your next move! Mainly because in order to survive, your brain has to be 2 moves ahead of what your body is actually doing.

I remember being near a forest fire several years ago. They brought in 4 D-9 Cats, They had 3 helicopters and a spotter airplane. I\m not sure how many fire fighters they had but their was a lot. Their was an85 year old farmer living alone and he refused to leave. The D-9 cats went in and tried to cut the fire off but the wind changed and they just barely had enough time to turn around and get out. The farmer finally decided to leave when he saw his 50 foot tall spruce trees candling with fire and than the helicopter dropped its load of water on his house. It ended up taking a month to get the fire out. I still find fire fighters 1 inch hoses in whats left of the trees. It turns out the fire was started by another farmer down the road who was burning a a big brush pile months ago and never bothered to check it. He was sued by the county for over a million dollars and he ended up selling his farm to pay off this bill.

Luckily It was the just a lift cylinder and I was able to back out before I lost the dozer. Lesson learned never put myself in a position I couldn't get out of if the machine quit. Wield land fires in Arkansas are normally fought with a combination of state or government owned fire plows (self contained dozer/ plow) spotters, aerial spotters and aircraft tankers and volunteer local firemen on the ground mopping up hot spots and protecting structures. We have very rough terrain in some areas and back fires and controlled burns are a our best tool. God bless all firefighters.

I watch alot of these fire videos because we use to be a dozer unit from 1952-1990 near the Canadian border in the Adirondacks and eastern NY. It's alot different than back in our days. We had Cat D6s and D9s and an Allis Chalmers HD41 big iron open ROPS or just plain open stations we were allowed to haul them with blades and root rakes on taking up whole roads and usually escorted by a forest ranger or sherriff and use to send our smaller machines around the perimeter and get a brake in and use to send our big iron through the center busting roads for the fire trucks to get in Blade on our old HD41 was wide enough one psss was wide enough to get 2 firetrucks through 2 wide and one one would work each side of road. We use to work a perimeter around the fire and then make a cross through the center usually sending the D9s accross the shortest part of fire and the HD41 through the longest part or up any of the hills because it would move the most dirt the fastest. Use to carry rolls of road fabric strapped to the back of the machines you came to wet swampy land you rolled out the fabric pushed dirt over it and you kept going some places and fires we were on we just went in side by side and levelled everything and pushed acres and acres into piles and the fire crews would fight the piles especially on the hill sides where the couldn't get the trucks in. Today most fires you can't even get on unless you have an enclosed cab and nomex fire suits and shelters we use to go in with t shirts and flannels and a big metal water cooler strapped on one of the running boards with ice water in it and a lunch pale tucked beside the seat when the smoke got heavy we soaked a rag in water and wrapped it around our faces it's a new game today but do I miss the days of being a teen on a 70 ton piece of iron just pushing mountains down with a stanley metal thermos cup of coffee in one hand and the blade stick in the other. We closed our doors when it all got political and NY Encon said we needed to go through training and our machines needed to be certified after doing it for 30 some years we still do some fire work every now and then for a few local fire departments but it's mostly small brush fires and when they need a structure such as a barn full of hay on the ground and spread out but we haven't been on any big state fires since 1990

Reminds me of a story my dad used to tell. the company man on a oil drilling rig wasn't happy with the amount they had drilled that day, he started yelling at the driller (For you that aren't familiar with oil drilling the driller is the boss of the rig for his shift) any how he demanded to know how long you lazy .... took off for lunch the old driller spit on the floor and said "One Glove" Dave ate half his sandwich he took off one glove! 👍👍 I would be tempted to mount some kind of water tank and sprayer just in case

You didn’t waste any time. Look how our state and the Feds deal with fires here on the west coast. They wait until the get huge then put hundreds of men on it. Most of the time only 1/3 to 1/2 are working on the fire. My point you did a good deed! It can be much worse.
