Very good trimming Tomas!!! You did perfectly with cow number 3, and yes... you want it to dry out! Hoof horn naturally sheds away from itself as it dries out (thats what the white powdery stuff you sometimes see is), that means that all blocks which are only glued on the sole of the hoof will eventually fall off, some farms we have, have AWESOME block retention some farms the blocks don't stay on so long - usually farms with a lot of slats lose blocks more quickly than anyone would like. The best ways to get blocks to stay on for a LOT longer are by nailing them on (that's how I trained to do it) or by using a "shoe" style block ... where the block actually encapsulates the cow's toe and therefore is glued on all sides and isn't affected by the sole hoof horn shedding away 😀 Awesome vid

So that thing on the end of the glue gun is called a static mixing nozzle and it obviously mixes the glue without introducing air into the mixture always a bonus. Each little crossover inside the nozzle is all an element and most of the nozzles have a minimum amount of elements. They are sized for the viscosity of the adhesive, max flow rate and how long it should be mixed for. All in all probably could with less but it's down to making sure the product doesn't fail what would you rather waste a bit of glue or fins all your blocks falling off. Planes are glued together with similar mixing nozzles. That where this technology has come from

Graham does blocks just a bit differently, that may affect glue performance. Glue - of any sort - is persnickety and wants to be applied just so. Put the glue on the hoof and let a nice fat layer of it sit between hoof and block.

I remember when GP last visited, he said he used an alcohol wash. This'll evaporate much faster than water, might help with block retention when a wash is used Although washing is only really for the camera normally, as it rarely helps the trim.

Scratch the hoof with your knife before adding the glue to give it something to grip onto.

Graeme almost never washes up the hoof beforehand because it takes forever, and he wants the cow to spend as little time in the crush as possible. Plus the grinder takes off the muck anyway. You are a hoof-trimming rock star, Tom! Don't let anybody tell you otherwise. The Hoof TP

Tom , I work for an adhesives company and I understand that the length of the mixer tube is the number of mixer elements, certain adhesives need more mixing than others, hence longer tube. But could they have more mixing steps in a shorter tube, I guess yes if they can make enough to cover the cost, a big question.

When applying the blocks, don’t press them hard against the hoof. There should be a couple of millimeters of glue between the block and the hoof. It’s the glue that sticks, and maybe you push all the glue out:) try to look at the blocks that come off, if you find them. Does the glue stick to the block or to the hoof. And always let the glue cure until it stops heating, but I’m sure you know that:) Great videos by the way👌

That bit about it squeezing all the glue out does make sense to me, so that might be Tom's secret weapon now for keeping them on by not expelling all the glue.

Perhaps a crash course of "Cake Icing" might come in handy for a neat glued on pad. ( just joking Tom ).

Tom with all the building work going on there is going to be lots of small sharp fragments of concrete around the farm yard. That can't be good for your cows. Get that brush from Olly and sweep the yard and I am pretty sure the hoof problems will greatly reduce.

Use a flat bastard file (yes, that's what they are called) to level and roughen up the hoof before heating and apply epoxy to the hoof. The epoxy/hoof interface is the weakest link.

Safety glasses when grinding? Danger doesn't take a day off!

When you're used to HGP's quiet grinder heads and Tom comes in and I'm glad I didn't have my headphones in 😂 😉

Oh, but the HGP's grinders are not all quiet ones. I think that's what the music is for.

Don't forget you've also had 6 months of them using the bale and having to do a couple of tight(ish) turns to get in and the ramps up/down which is going to cause increase pressures on different parts of their feet which may be why you've had a couple more issues. Also - Hoof GP doesn't even wash all the feet, only those that he feels he needs to wash them to be able to see the problem.

I think the length of the nozzle is to make the two chemicals mix properly before leaving the end 👍🇬🇬

Hoof GP has said many times he only washes the feet for viewer benefit as it doesn't serve any other purpose. The feet are going back onto the surface they came off. The length of tip makes a bigger difference for mixing than you realise. You missed a "that's what she said" with that one.

Good video showing how you trim. I found your channel a few years ago when you and the Hoof GP did a collaboration and he was at your farm. Obviously I’ve stayed here because of the great content of the channel. I bet he would be super impressed with all of the new changes to the farm. Don’t know if he watches all of your videos but I see he commented on this on.

As a hooftrimmer I would say keep the glue off the back end of the block. Also you put about twice the amount on I would. I use moo tac pro. Have done for years and wouldn’t change.

I think the only thing missing from 99% block retention with the green wonder glue is: practice. You got excellent results for using new kit for the first time. Practice Makes Perfect 👌.

love your content man, im from the us (Wisconsin the DAIRY STATE) haha spent many years on a farm and i find it so interesting how other farm around the world!

From watching the Hoof GP as well as TEC TV, the Midwestern Hoof Trimmer, and the Female Hoof Trimmer, I noticed one major difference. It seems the hoof trimmers will all make sure the hoof that will get the block, is completely level before they model the inside curve. It seems with the way your crush holds a hoof, that it’s difficult to see if the walking surface is actually level. If the walking surface has high or low spots, that will affect how well the glue holds over time, being thick in the low spots and lots thinner in the high spots. Glad to see how well you know each of your cows, and attend to their needs.🐄❤️

Tom we went to nail less shoes on our horses years ago, when we adhere the shoe to the hoof we wrap the narrow shrink wrap used in packaging on the hoof to hold the shoes in place, when the horse places weight on it the shoe stays in place until the glue sets then we cut it off and the shoe lasts much longer. we use VetTech epoxy......full length tube idiot proofs the mixing process

Tom, when your ready with the glue gun, take the pressure of (little clip on the handle) it will sop glue dripping out.

Saw you limping then you said your foot hurts... The first thing I thought was “maybe you need a block on too!” Lol. It was very interesting seeing how you block part of the hoof to help the part that is hurt! Thanks for showing us that! Will the collars let you know of an uneven gait? You had said one of the hoof issue cows was really thin. Was that the one that just had a calf? Why might a cow be very thin? Most cows are boney along their back toward the end aren’t they? It was neat to see you taking care of your ladies… you are always on the lookout for issues aren’t you? I am sure your dad has taught you everything he knows. Think the only thing you maybe should do differently is apply the glue straight onto the cows hoof straight after you have had the blowtorch and maybe bit more glue . You still did a fab job with a fair testvout of the glue . Wondering if you get a reply form hoof gp . Also following him . Great chap . 😊

I usually make several cuts with the knife before gluing. Maybe the glue will grip the hoof better then. We have blocks that sit for 4 months until the next triming and those that fall off after 2 weeks. I think the cows maby do a hard turn and tear the block off 🤷

The Hoof G P tapers his blocks so the cow has a bit of a natural rocking motion while walking. He does this with a grinder. You are good at this trimming also.

Here in the states when they put a block on the cows feet they take athletic bandage for cows an wrap the hoof to keep it from being infected also to keep it somewhat sealed up

Great video. Are you going to train Hugo to a harness so you can lead him. You were right it does dry faster, the hoof gp had the glue made so it would harden faster so he wouldn't have the cow's in the crush so long and he could start back onto the bad foot faster.

Why don't you hook up a pressure washer to clean the milking parlor the hoses would be half the size and you would use a third of the water to clean it and there would be so much less going into your holding tank

I rarely have a block still on after about 2 weeks so 3 weeks plus I would say is right on 💪

Try double sticking the blocks. Apply glue to the hoof and block so you get a full bond with no air bubbles.

We had the same problem with them falling off so we heated it up a little bit more then wiped their foot and heated it once more and then put on the block seemed to work better

We milk 3 X a day, the cows go through the footbath twice a day. We still have some lame ones, but alot of them is because of billing and going down on the stackers, but still Gabe feet issues, cows feet aren't designed for hard standing. Great video

Tom, HGP always puts the glue on the hoof not on the block. Maybe that makes a big difference. 🥰🇦🇺

Tom you should invent some kind of clamp that you can put on to the block for a few minutes to help adhesion.

Don’t use the first bit of resin through the tip! I do a lot of bolt installation for rope access and we use very similar resins and guns. Often times with two part resins the first little bit that comes out won’t be quite the right ratio it’s just down to how it’s manufactured one side might not come out at exactly the same time. Just squirt the first bit out onto something until the colour is nice and even then apply it to the block.

having also used litraly tons of the 2 pack resin to anchor buildings to concrete slabs we would always discard the first say 2 inches of mix on a new mixing straw for exactly the same reason as commented above. Great video otherwise as per normal@@TomPembertonFarmLife

Um, Tom first cow you're supposed to trim it so it doesn't have a pocket so slurry doesn't get stuck in it. I'm a three year arm chair hoof trimmer and farmer so I'm basically a professional. Great video as per usual.

Tom. You probably need to trim the hoof for the block much flatter. From video, difficult to get accurate view, but seems to me you had concave shape with gap under centre of block. Graham puts adhesive on the hoof (you put on the block) and will usually also heat the plastic blocks to remove any grease used during the moulding process (definitely you need to discuss with Graham). The wooden block probably did not fall off because it is not moulded. The stem which you said was too long has internal baffles to mix the resin and hardener. The length is designed to fully mix the adhesive and also means you waste quite a lot of adhesive! Think you need to watch more of Graham's videos your trimming with the knife still had some loose hoof which needs to be removed. Otherwise looked a reasonable job for a farmer........! Very good videos, new parlour looks spot on!

Great Video again Tom. But I don't understand why your dad was praising the NHS in the other video. With the NHS, you have to go to them for them to sort you out, but I'm sure you could have done his appendicitis for him with al your skills, then you would be saving on the fuel getting him there, and the people who like to see PUS would have gotten a bonus. 😜 You could just stick him in the crush, then a bit of in house surgery by yourself with that grinder. 😂 And he even gets a free pair of High Heels at the end of it. 🤣🤣 Joking aside, I'm not far behind your dad in age and I just love the way his mind is set on continuing working at his age.
