I may not have the same video where you referred to "wring out the wash rag ". That brought me back to the old ranch my grandfather homesteaded in south western Kansas. In 1947 we didn't have rural electric power. Mom had an old may tag wringer washing machine with a brigs & Stratton gas motor powering it. At 5 years old my job was twisting on the gas valve and lift the kick starter on the motor so mom could stomp it down to start it. After getting all the clothes done, mom would say " ok, time to wring out the wash rag." Then she would spin me around like on a barn dance floor.

Mr Pat, Thank you for suggesting we read 2 Years Before the Mast. Most people don't realize how big the hide and tallow business was in that period. The horses running loose with a catch rope on them and all neck reining. 180 years ago their was nothing, only a few people on the coast of Calif. Most amazing was the hardship of working as a sailor on a sailing ship the reefing of sails in freezing weather. His 3 months on shore preparing flint hides to ship, wading in the brine and the horrific smell was a job I doubt you could hire anyone to do now.

Washer is called a finish washer, also if you can't find your pilers you can put a pair of saddle strings through the slit ,then you put the end of the wrap in between the strings and pull through the slit

Thanks for yet another informative and entertaining lesson. Good stuff to know how to do right. And oh, by the way, that little metal deal under the rope strap holding screw is called a finishing washer in the hardware world. They come in different sizes depending on the size screw you're using. Finishes off the installation nicely and keeps from stuff snagging on the exposed edges of the screw. Pat is not kidding about the "little curve at the bottom of the horn." If you don't t pull the horn wrap down to cover the base the horn and the surrounding swell/fork cover, (like Pat shows) you will dally and have the rope come tight, it can slide up under the horn wrap and you will be tied on hard and fast with no way of getting it loose! This would result in "a betrayal of your horse" (as Pat would call it) and a potential trip to the ER.

Perfect just the video I needed to see mine come off ! And I didn't know how to finish it off ! Hope yr neck healing bloody bad luck buddy U must have rode over a Apache sacred burial ground!

Pat, you likely never had an issue but I use a hole punch on each end of the slit to keep the slit from potentially tearing further either direction.

Watching your videos and listening to your stories, your voice especially reminds me of the Great John Wayne. Take care you guys, still trying to catch up with me back log of videos.

Love that wade Pat Some of us wrap that mule hide with no screw I like my tooled custom wade too much but to each his own That saddle is the best and a night latch with a good mulehide wrap will serve ya well Please tell your folks how much better that flat plate riggin is so much better for ya pony than double D ☮️

Journals from back in the day referred to fat inside the intestinal cavity was called caul. It might be the same as kidney fat. They would fry meat from the same animal in the caul. And, thank you, Pat, for your service in Vietnam.

I watch a lot of your videos Pat and really learn a lot from them, Thank You! However IMHO the JM Capriola horn wrap tutorial is a better method, requires no hardware use or nails(I know you did not nail but some methods do) and it leaves the Starboard side of the saddle cleaner.

Who makes those saddles for you Pat? I like the seat in those.

WELCOME HOME. I stumbled on to your videos while while making my own 1850's pommel bags and saw you mention Badger, CA. I'm in Sandy UT now but raised just down the mountain a couple miles from Badger. My father built the first real road from Badger to Pinehurst about 1948. My goal is to make a bridal horse out of a 12 year old foxtrotter gelding shaped more like an Azteca than a foxtrotter. Have you made a bridal horse from a gaited horse in the past? Can I anticipate any problems particular to gaited horses. About half of the Spanish horses brought to this continent were gaited (Spanish Barbs) and about one third of the free roaming wild horses in the US have a broken four beat gait. Que les vayan bien.

We haven’t ever made a bridle horse out of a gaited horse. For us, it is difficult to get them to shift their weight to the hindquarters. Also, the gaited horses we’ve been involved with don’t have the speed and acceleration needed when roping cattle outside. Regarding “free roaming wild horses,” I believe many of the ones that have the four beat gait can trace their origins to the depression when people turned their horses out because they couldn’t afford to keep them. Many horses we have gotten in Mexico have what we call a “single foot” which is a little amble that is a pleasure to ride in the hills. These horses are often descended from coach horses imported when the French ruled Mexico. I don’t have a lot of knowledge of the origins or gaits of Spanish Barbs. I think it’s important to know the difference between gaited and animated.

So much info Pat, I'm very grateful for your sharing. I'm only now starting to ride again with my 12 y/o daughter,after 40 years off. We used to ride( Western) on our farm when I was a small boy. But Dad never taught like you teach or had ypur knowledge. Where do I start with your videos? Can you recommend a good starter saddle? Thanks

There really isn’t a starting point with the videos. Just go to our channel and scroll through the videos and see what you might be interested in learning. Regarding a saddle, I would opt for a well made used saddle over a new, cheaply made saddle. Make sure you sit in it before buying it.

I am not saying I know anything but the best cowboy I’ve seen in person used tire tubes. Maybe that was just all he had but he cut it in strips and put it on with the saddle on the horse. It’s in a circle so just pull and wrap. Took maybe a minute and it worked. I don’t know if he still does it and it probably isn’t considered attractive but he roped a lot with that setup.

Roping with rubber on the horn makes it impossible to slide rope. Not sliding rope means you jerk your horse and whatever you have roped which, over the long term, is not good for either of them. When cowboys rope something, it’s usually because they’re sick so we try to do it in a stress-free manner. Team ropers use rubber on their horns because it’s a timed event. It’s not what we do.

It’s called mule hide but it is not the hide of a mule. That’s just what it’s called. Also it is sueded on both sides.

If you buy a good one one side will have both edges skived slightly to help it lay down on the edges, the skived side goes in.

Someone told me to try chap leather because it's a little tackier then mule hide as iv roped with rubber because my boss is a team roper and that's just what they use but I'd like to try mule hide or something similar. Hello Jayme. We’ve seen people use chap leather and latigo leather. If you actually slide rope, which is what our style of roping is all about, you can run through chap hide or latigo in a day. Mule hide has just the right amount of grab and lasts a long time. If you have something roped and you find your rope is sliding too much, take another dally. That’s the way it works. Like a clutch and brake. Thanks for the question.

You wrap the horn the opposite way or you will unwind your horn wrap when you slide rope.

A reata is like a woman. It can stand a lot of pulling but it can’t stand a jerk. If you have rubber on your horn and use a reata, you’ll end up with two reatas at some point.
