Putting a Camry Engine in My MR2 - Episode 1
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
It's finally time to get the MR2 running again! This time, with a different engine. I'm dropping in a 2AR Toyota engine from a Toyota Camry. This engine was built for fuel efficiency, but we're going to tweak it a bit, and use it's own engineering against it, to double the horsepower output!

Great way to clog a oil port.
Marc of Frankenstein Motorworks is the single most knowledgable and honest car specialist I've ever worked, and by MILES. (And I've worked with a LOT of them.) It's great seeing him on a larger channel. If you have an MR2 and you're looking anywhere else first, you're making a mistake.
4:28 this entire build is so fascinating to me because it was almost as if for 2 decades starting from the early 2000’s Toyota never had anything fun with a manual transmission that made over 200hp (other than the Lexus IS F), but here comes mark and ben creating a dream blunt rotation Toyota MR3 out of reused toyota partsbin/junkyard parts. even using a SCION TC’s manual transmission, the car that used to consistently lose comparison tests and drag races to the Toyota Corolla XRS, Honda Civic Si, Acura Integra Type S, Toyota Celica GTS, Kia Forte Koup SX, Chevorlet Cobalt SS, Saturn Ion Redline, and Dodge Neon. bravo.
I thought it was a bug walking around the engine at 9:47 but realized it's just like a rubber part. Looks like done in purpose xD

I took a second look at that too. I think it's just a lightweight piece of debris getting pushed by a fan.
How the hell did Mark figure this out? Smart dude 😎👍
@Wilbure
Жыл бұрын
He's definitely a smart dude and knowledgeable guy, but I reckon most of that stuff is just figured out by trial and error, and having the passion and time to play around with it. Like he said he used that motor on his lemons car, so while he was working on that over the years I'd say he just noticed things that he could improve or things that would be cool and did them piece by piece. Then after a while of doing small improvements he probably stepped back and was like "huh this is actually really legit" and could be great for the application outside of his lemons car. He would have made some parts by that point one off for his car, and known about pricing and availability of the engines and transmisisons etc. So not to speak for him, even though I guess that's what I'm doing, it probably just came together with work over time. Yeah he had to be smart to come up with the ideas and such, but I'd say his passion and just playing around with the stuff was responsible for most of it.

@@Wilbure You're mostly correct here except the 2AR-FXE was specifically born because once the 2AR started making power i started getting harassed by the K folks about "it's too expensive" so i set out to find a configuration of OEM parts that would make 220whp or more for under $1000. i ended up at 230whp and right at $1000. But yeah, this is years if just poking around with it. I've been racing with the 2AR-FE since 2009. It's a fantastic motor

You can see Marc's MR-S race car in action on his channel. It's a beast with this motor.
Glad to see Marc being featured in other channels! I’ve always been an MR2 fan and watching someone as skilled and knowledgeable as Marc improve this platform has been extremely gratifying.
Mark is the type of guy you want working on your car. Absolutely love how articulate he is.
This is my favorite build on the channel and I'm so excited to see this car evolve!! Also so happy to see a 2AR build I really think more and more people will be using the engine in the future
Yess! I was hoping this would be the colaboration! Been following mark for a while as my next swap is going to be the 2AR. Hes done so much research and such a cool down to earth guy.
Just what I needed this morning!
Was very surprised and glad to see Marc on this build.. As soon as they identified the 2AR in the previous video, I figured they'd be getting a lot of parts and information from Marc. He has done some amazing R&D, and look forward to seeing this build progress.. And will certainly be keeping my money collecting (very slowly) to do the engine/trans upgrade in my MR-S one day (hopefully in the very near future)!!.. The wiring will for sure be my major holdup on this route...
You all got Marc to help with this build, epic! He's the man when it comes to these engines. I think he's build both the 2.5 and 2.7 liter hybrid engines?
This is why I love this channel. Showing mad mechanic coming with original ideas to produce cheap and reliable horsepower making motorsport more accessible !
My heart jumped a little when I heard Mark say "which will turn it from a high efficiency cam into a high performance cam" this build is gonna be awesome!!!
Love to get a "Before Swap" and "After Swap" comparison on Vehicle Weight and Weight Distribution. As everyone else is thinking, "if only I had the money, space and a Mark"! I still miss my 1986 MR2 that I added a SUPERCHARGER to... Loved that "Square Wedge Lifestyle.
Mark's knowledge of these motors and how to mod them is next level-wow!!
Absolutely love the magic of taking a bunch of parts from different engines and turning it into an outstanding one
YES!!!!! More of Mark from Frankenstein please! Great tech from him and he is genuinely impressive in his level and depth of engineering
I was looking forward to this series. Glad the series started! Edit: Mark already being the MVP.
This is one of the coolest engine swaps I have seen. Not because its a weird combo, like an LS7 in a minivan or something, but because all of the extremely detailed work that's going into modifying the hybrid motor to make it more performance worthy.
I’m so happy to see Mark getting even more exposure. His work has been underrated. He gave me the idea of doing the 2ZR & 3ZR Frankenstein to put in my Yaris. Still in the works though…. 😊
I only recently found out about Mark from the previous video and going through his Instagram, there’s so much awesome stuff that he makes! Can’t wait for this MR2 to be a running again!
Mark is a genius. I first saw his genius at work when the Throtl team was building their mr2 with the camary v6. Really exited for this build. 🔥🔥🔥
PERFECT combo @Frankenstein Motorworks (underrated channel) regarding the MR2 . been HOPING for this for a long time. THANKS gears and gasoline

What a mad scientist. How tf did Mark figure this stuff out!?
THIS COLLAB IS AMAZING!!! I’ve been following Marc for YEARS. Marc’s absolute genius and he’s moving mountains in the Scion and 2AR market. Mad respect to y’all. I’m so excited for this!

I knew it! I saw the engine reveal and instantly went through Mark's entire catalogue on his 2AR work and had a feeling he was gonna be involved, its an exciting engine and looking forward to this in real time haha
I'm so insanely happy to see this collaboration! I've been following Marc's channel Frankenstein motorworks for awhile and I've been suggesting this since you bought the MR2 🤘
This is probably the most respectful comment section on a Toyota engine swap I’ve ever seen. No “it should’ve been a 2JZ” comments or anything.
That is amazing! "Well the intake cam in monstrous and we can also use it for the exhaust cam". I love the lego for this engine. Also being able convert it to cvvt for both cams is crazy
As an 3rd gen MR2 owner (2zz) I am soo happy to see Marc from Frankenstein motorworks getting some more of the recognition he deserves. Amazing work, excited to see where this 2AR swap goes.
Incredible amount of knowledge! As an owner of a 2AR Scion tC, it's great to see this motor meet its potential
YES MAN!!! this is the creator mashup i needed. love both of these channels 🤝🏼
Really enjoyed that.. you guys are real knowledgeable and yet easy to watch. Thanks to everyone involved!!
How nice is to see those guys working together, amazing job Mark. Let's go Toyota power💪🏽🇯🇵
Mark and this video in general with all the explanations of the unique quirks on this engine really makes you appreciate the amount of innovation that Toyota jammed into these hybrid engines -and somehow they’re still bulletproof reliable. Beautiful from an engineering standpoint really.
This colab video was everything I was hoping for and more. I cannot wait for the next one! 👍
A perfect match! I’ve been watching both channels for a few years now. Glad you found each other!

This video earned my subscription! Reminds me of my MR2 days when I was younger, I was one of the few who did a MK1.5 swap back in the day. Love to see these innovations.
Hope to see this build more often now that GLTC is done. Very excited to see this thing with this motor.
I think it's a very interesting concept and I appreciate the effort y'all put to document the whole process. Personally I'm waiting for the first lunatic to fit a Toyota sequoia V8 engine inside an MR2 or Toyota Celica 7th gen. Still, Great job guys!!! Can't wait to see where you end up with that little Mr2.
A lot of great info that was put together very well. Great job!
Frankenstein Motorworks Marc, it's great to see you collaborating with other channels and getting some exposure! I've watched all your videos on the 2AR-FXE build, excited to see how this one turns out too!
I love this kind of stuff! Reminds me of sports car compact magazine (I know I’m showing my age. Doubt people remember that mag 😂)
Awesome video! And thank you Mark for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us!
this is great! really cool to see the re-use and "frankensteining" of newer Toyota parts!
really interesting, a very capable technical ability to swap the car engine with so many components inside, a great job. we are looking forward to the next episode
By far my fav project and collaboration you’ve done :)
Really enjoy the videos you guys put up on the channel, they are always really well shot and edited. Plus whenever you have someone on who really knows their stuff you just let them talk through it and don't dumb it down. Keep up the good work probably my favourite automotive KZread channel. 👍

Nice. I hope this gets marc more exposure. He is doing a lot of cool stuff!
I have a '14 Scion TC, it's so stout and a great daily. Such an underrated car, especially as a cheap but decent first manual car. I learned some cool stuff about the 2AR engine today! That detent for the 6 speed isn't needed stock since it has a reverse lock out on the shifter side. Love this build!

Thank you!! I assumed it was related to the shifter having a lock out collar but that wasn't explained at any point.
Thats awesome how much factory parts is re-imagined with this build, love it!
just started watching marks videos last week and subbed. cool to see him working with you guys.
Mark is a programmer that turned his hobby into a business of love. You can see it in his work and finishes. Watch some videos Toyota fans.
Mark knows his stuff!!
I miss my mr2 so much, keep seeing people with their's and it makes me so sad but happy for them
At first, I was very skeptical about not using the 2zz even though power is hard to make without forced induction. But after seeing what Mark has done to the 2ar, I'm stunned!

Right that's what I was thinking too. Most of these MR2 spider favorite engine swap is the 2zz and when he said that their using a camry engine I'm like WHAT.. But after watching this and seeing what he did to that engine is just pure knowledge and experience OMG I'm impress. But a MR2 spider 2zz swap is still the better and easier swap in mind but what their doing is also absolutely cool to see too. I'm really impress 👏 👏 👏
I've been following his work on the 2AR-FE on his channel. It's awesome to see him here!

Probably in the minority here, but this MR2 build is my favorite G&G build currently going on. This thing will be a track weapon! 🦾
