Putin is gearing up for a war that could last 'years to come' | Mark Galeotti

Gearing up? We must see the economic, technological and military “gearing up power” of Russia in perspective. Russia is indeed a huge country in square km, but only has (a declining) 144 million inhabitants (Mexico 128 million, Japan 123 million). This is about 30% of USA or Eurozone. The GDP of Russia however is only 4% of the GDP of the Eurozone + USA, this is equal to the GDP of the small countries Belgium + Netherlands. And less than the GDP of the state of California. Relatively (per capita) the GDP of Russia is very low. Beside that the economy of Russia has signs of a 3th world economy. Half of the income is coming from oil & gas. Based on this, Russia isn’t a world power. And for sure, it isn’t a economic power. This is the reason they can’t gear up and can’t build up and maintain a big army. The army they had is far beyond normal proportions in relation to their GDP. This hurts their budgets and prosperity permanently. In this perspective, Russia is just a dictatorship with a huge inferiority complex and dangerous megalomaniac ambitions. The path they chose will be their downfall.

His game is to prevent Ukraine becoming a member of NATO. As a NATO member, the US would then place nuclear weapons in Ukraine on the Russia border. Flight time to Moscow would be less than 10 minutes. Bingo. Russia sees Ukraine’s membership as an existential threat. There are similarities with this scenario and the 1962 Cuban Missiles Crisis.

@@michaelmaguire9330👈🤡 Let me point out a few FACTS to you 🤡 1. This war was NEVER about Ukraine joining Nato. 2. It was Nato who actually rejected Ukraine joining Nato, however because of this war they will eventually become a member of Nato. 3. Nato was NOT expanding closer to Russian border. 4. Putin was the one expanding Russia, amd dragging the Russian people backwards, all because he wants his old USSR back. That IS THE REAL REASON OF THIS WAR, IT IS NOTHING BUT A LAND GRAB. IF YOU THINK THAT PUTIN WAS GOING TO STOP AT UKRAINE THEN YOU ARE DELUDED 5. Nato were NEVER going to put nukes in Ukraine 😂, why would they move nuke Into Ukraine to hit Russia, they could do that from thousands of miles away. 6. Nato had NO intentions of moving any nukes. 7. Putin was the only one who actually moved nukes into another country. 8. Putin is the only one who continues to threaten the world with nukes. NOONE else has. 9. NOONE absolutely NOONE is going to use nukes, NOT even the Cowardly war criminal Putin who DOESN'T ACTUALLY have the capability of personally launching any nukes. There is NO big red button in the kremlin. Putin can only give the order, and that is an order that will NEVER be carried out and cost 🤡Putin his life. 10. I suggest you do a thing called research which you have already shown you are incapable of doing and educate yourself as to the real reason Putin started his war in 2014, as clearly you DON'T ACTUALLY have a clue what you are on about.

With respect, I do not subscribe to your opinion. I think what Putin wants is to prevent Ukraine ever becoming a member of NATO. In 2008 NATO stated that both Georgia and Ukraine would be offered membership of NATO. If Ukraine does become a member of NATO, then the US will place its nuclear weapons along the Ukraine/Russian border. And of course the flight time of a nuclear warhead to Moscow is about 10 minutes. The US experienced a similar problem during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Let’s hope for an end to this madness very soon.

The West does (officially) agree that Taiwan belongs to China. That’s why Taiwan has no embassies in the West, and isn’t recognised as a sovereign country by the UN. But the West doesn’t agree that China should be allowed to take control of Taiwan using military force, only by political persuasion (which isn’t working). China regards this as Western interference in China’s internal affairs. China also believes that nations are entitled to do absolutely anything they want within their own borders, on the principle that national sovereignty is far more important than human rights.

Russia does not have too many troops. Putin is very afraid to mobilise. By the end of May 500,000 will have been lost from the battlefield. The Russian economy needs many more workers, but mobilising more for the war undermines the economy further. If Russia were to make breakthroughs in 2024, various European countries will enter Ukraine in support, if only freeing up Ukrainians from non frontline positions.
