Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but when Jack asks what he did to deserve drowning in the star "Specifically", it's the movie asking you to find what Jacks mistake was. In his case, it was leaving behind Marry Poppins Flying Umbrella when he "overpacked". It's a fine example of Dramatic Irony.

I was honestly surprised dreamworks took so many risks with the plot, the jokes, the visuals, and even the characters. Showing actual blood on a kids movie, even if it was only a drop took a lot to do and many of the bleeped out jokes, you can tell exactly what they were saying. And the plot was really risky by not making it solely some adventure and having puss do it not out of adventure, but out of fear for his own life. Also having a irredeemable villain in jack horner really made it feel much better than most movies as the twist with him is there is no twist. Theres no redemption, or excuse for his actions. He is just is unapologetically evil and is fully aware of it. Even if jiminy cricket could do anything for him, he'd never take the help or make the effort for change, because he doesnt want to

It's really interesting how it actually worked making a villian evil just because they are. Usually it's an annoying lazy trope in which seeing the humanity and nuance if a villian is much preferred to the villian existing just to have an antagonist. The difference here I think, is that Jack is aware of himself being a selfish asshole who just wants power for himself, where as most simple villians are similar,, I guess Jack feels more human in his knowingly selfish demeanor? That's the best wording I can think of at the moment lx)

  • @aiiiia9971

I had been really itching to see a villain like that, because we really have to be aware that not everybody wants to become better and sometimes you have to act as if they will never change. Not all villains have a tragic backstory or a good motive. Especially not in real life. Now I also love that in Puss in Boots 2 they covered all their bases because they didn't just show an example of a flat villain unwilling to change, but also Goldie, a sympathetic antagonist who learned a lesson and did improve somewhat as a person or at least as a daughter/sister through her experience

@@boomguitarjared You raise a good point! There is no doubt he is well written, but it is a bit of a challenge to pinpoint what they did right (I mean specifically!). One of those things is definitely self awareness. I feel like a lot of genuinely lazily written, flat villains are played straight, or even go so far as to try and defend their actions with logic or garner sympathy which isn't earned. Almost as if the writers expect you to just pretend it makes sense. Jack Horner doesn't insult your intelligence as a viewer. His motivations are not good, he has no good reason to do what he is doing, he is flat out wrong and terrible, and he knows it, and you know it, and everyone is fully aware but it is happening anyways. And part of that is so satisfying compared to a story just trying to con you into feeling sympathy for characters that don't deserve

I don't know if everybody noticed, but the best detail about Death's character that I absolutely love is the fact that despite being in the same dark forest as everyone else, he doesn't appear on the map at all, showing who he really was. Also I noticed the obstacles of the map depending on the onlooker correlates to what they grew up around. The star wasn't scaring them off or trying to prevent them from reaching it but was visually telling them that they already had their wishes but have yet to realize. However if they still sought out to wish upon the star, it would let them. Goldilocks was reminded of how happy she was with the bears from the forest of nostalgia, Puss was reminded of how wasteful his last 8 lives were and Kitty was reminded of her loneliness from her distrust. Then came Perrito and his special case. He didn't have a wish but his past was tragic and the star knew. So it made him a peaceful path that was calmer and relaxing. He liked to stop and smell the posies and then the river he was thrown in, he was now afloat on.

The things Puss and Goldie were confronted with were the emotions that prompted their wishes in the first place - the things they feared/hated feeling. It exposes the raw wounds that are driving them and forces them to deal with their issues. Once they do, they realize that their wishes will ruin them if they are answered the way they think the wishes ought to be. Puss will slide back into easy arrogance - every time he dies, he can just shrug it off. He has forever to live and make friends, so no rush to make life a good one. (He might even wish for unlimited lives, not just the 9 back.) Goldie would gain a new family, but they would not love her the way she was - they would always expect her to be a normal girl. Or even if they didn't, she would always feel not good enough, kind of like she already did, only worse. KItty's wish was contingent on Puss finding what he needed and becoming who he ought to be. Perrito makes his own wishes come true by being who he is; honest, sincere, empathetic, and optimistic...and his friends give him someone to do that for.

Because sometimes people can be hypocritical, and it's definitely within Kitty's character to hold something like that over Puss out of catty (sorry for the pun) spite, despite doing the same thing herself. People do this all the time in the real world, getting angry at other people for things they themselves do, and Kitty not showing up to the wedding also makes sense for her character just as much, if not more, than her showing up but lying to Puss to spare his feelings. And, from a character perspective, it just makes more sense, plus is more humorous, for both Puss and Kitty to have flaked out and gotten cold paws on their wedding day, each for their own reasons. Having her lie to spare his feelings doesn't really add anything, especially since it's not really spelled out or explored any further, making that speculation just that - speculation.

I also think it’s worth pointing out how much influence this movie takes from different anime. The giant fight was straight out of Attack on Titan and the last battle where Puss and Death clash in the air is ripped straight from Naruto, if Dreamworks keeps borrowing some of the ideas from out east, they will bury Disney.

The symbolism especially with Death was so well done. The single candle getting blown out just before he first appeared, Puss being on his 9th cup of milk at the same time, Puss losing his sword (and his fighting spirit) and isn’t ready to really fight again until he gets the sword back in his final battle with Death.

It's one of those things you really just have to see for yourself. Nice analysis!! I wanted to point out that the Spanish lyrics in the credits song “La Vida Es Una” by Karol G have some really nice references to the movie as well: “La vida es una, lo dice la muerte” You only get one life, that’s what death says (Probably a reference to Death warning Puss about his last life, and the fact that creatures who aren’t cats only have one in the first place) “Porque el día que falle nada me llevo, solo el amor que me dan mis viejos” Because the day I go (die), I won’t take anything with me, just the love my parents give me (I feel this line is in reference to Goldilocks, who finally accepted that she truly did have parents, whether or not they were biological, or maybe how Perrito now considers Puss and Kitty his parents/family) “Hoy estoy, mañana no sabemos…es como la estrella y su deseo” I’m here today, but we don’t know about tomorrow…it’s like the star and its wish (The titular wish in the movie) The other beautiful Spanish song, “Por Qué Te Vas”, means “Why Are You Leaving?” and all the lyrics basically ask “Why did you leave when we were so happy weaving memories together?” which must be in reference to both Kitty and Puss forgoing the altar. This movie has so many cool details it’s unbelievable, and I’m glad they even sprinkled some into the Spanish lyrics. I also believe Kitty yelled, in Spanish, that she was going to turn the three bears into bathroom rugs at some point. If I made any translation errors please let me know!!

I wish there was more time with Jack and his Conscience. And I think a more poetic end would be if he doesn’t try to get rid of his Conscience until the end, but can’t because it’s magic. So he finally has this magical trait that he can’t get rid of and despises, doomed to an eternity of condemning chatter. If the film wanted to be super dark Jack could have chased after Death demanding he put him out of his misery and Death refusing to followed by a ‘NOOOOO’ which I think would have been a funnier and more poetic fate for Jack: Doomed to forever have a conscience he can’t get rid of. Though the way the film does it is ok as well. I just found the whole dynamic of a cartoon villain accidentally giving himself a conscience to be really funny and wish they had played that up more and not just had Jack ‘get rid of it.’ You could have had him try to only for the conscience to come back, upping the stakes for Jack, add a simple line ‘once I control all magic in the world the first thing I’m doing is to create a magical toad that can eat magical consciences!’ Or something like that.

We find out the dogs origin and it’s town down depressed origin similar to Tim Bertons origin of the penguin but not at winter and not in a basket in a river that ended up going into the sewers. Except the dog was sock in the river luckily the little dog survived and did not drown he got out of the sock he wears it now sweater even he got older. What other really brave Balls yet tragic thing happen that makes you fell dread and cry at the same time. They had puss have a panic attack they did it accurately to what a really life panic would be second time the wolf shows puss he runs into a tree. The little dog she he’s paint hears his heart speed up. The dog lays down his head right on top of puss cheats right above where his heart is then he calls him down. I only saw snippets of the film online I mentally balled my eyes out.

I like to think Death was originally mad at puss not just because of his own pride or job, but because since he is literally Death he has had to unfortunately take lives away from people who loved every second of life and was grateful for every moment even if it was short or long because it’s his job. All the while watching this ungrateful arrogant cat waste every moment of his while mocking him with every one of his rebirths. Those people he’s had to take away were grateful for the one, no matter how long it was or how horrible it was (good example would be Perrito) and here he is abusing every single one. That’s also why I believe he doesn’t go after kitty because well, she’s basically the opposite of Puss despite having nine lives herself, she appreciates every one.

Well a few things I noticed, Jack Horner definitely seems to know and accept that he's evil, and even feels proud of it. Also, I feel that you left out a prime motive for Death chasing after Puss in Boots specifically. Not only does he have 9 lives, 8 more than anything else, just by being a cat (which isn't enough for him to just go after every cat or Mama Luna would definitely have known about him), but he also wasted all of his extra lives so arrogantly and frivolously, and *that* pisses off Death so much, he'd go out of his way to break his own laws and finish off the last life himself. Judging by his reaction to Puss running away in the caves, this isn't the first time he's done this, and probably not just with cats as well.
