Um.. no. Let's apply a little critical thinking, shall we. "Cut open my sternum, and pull. My little ribs around you. The lungs of me be crowns over you." So, what part of the body is behind the sternum under the lungs and surrounded by the ribcage? A part of the body that the person she's singing to might metaphorically inhabit... She's inviting him into her heart.
@tandylindsay4105
7 жыл бұрын
Elliott when she says "cut open my sternum and pull my little ribs around you, the lungs of me be crowns over you" she is referring to the position of the heart in the body. Therefore saying that whomever she wrote the song about IS her ❤️. Then she goes on to say "you make a fine shrine in me" which I take to mean that she in a sense worships the person and/or unhealthy relationship. She idolizes the individual to the point that she feels as though they have replaced her innermost being.
I'm in love with this group!! Every song is amazing :)

Who also came to this song 9 years later and first heard it on roller champions
Awesome song indeed. A song so awesome I mention it in one of my novels and made "Fineshrine" the main theme for "Claire's Prayer" about a man who looks at life from purgatory after a car accident kills him. He was 19 years old and left a 35 year old fiancee who he dated in high school (he was 18 when the relationship started) and a baby he didn't know about before he died. He hangs out with a being who he thinks is his guide in purgatory but later to be revealed as God Himself. He gets sent back to earth, wiser and stronger, sent back to be with his true love and is there when his son is born on his 20th birthday. "Fineshrine" matched up with the nature of this novel perfectly and if it becomes a movie, I will ask Purity Ring to let me make this song the main theme to it.
IDK, I always thought it was a song about abuse and destruction. She's willing to give herself up for destruction at the hands of the guy she's with("YOU build a fine shrine in ME", "cut open MY sternum"). The video is her dream, she views him as Broken and Damaged, and she needs to let him cut her open so she can protect him, even if she hurts herself in the process. She dreams of planes because she wants to escape, she dreams of causing him injury either because she wants to hurt him back(repressed rage) or because she blames herself for his pain. He's a statue because he's cold and hard and completely incapable of connecting to anyone or anything, but inside there's the injured boy again because she's having a hard time reconciling her mental image of him, what with the heavy psychological burden that physical abuse causes. In her eyes, to justify his behavior, he is simultaneously the weak, scared, injured little boy who needs her protection, and an uncaring statue, uncompromising and cruel. There's a silver metal-looking substance dripping like blood a few times, and I'd assume that was because she wanted to be stronger herself, she'd want to "steel herself", but for the statue it's more she wants to melt his "steely heart" so he can be kind. It ends with a shot of him, perfectly fine and wholly uninjured, and she has every injury he had in her dream. She projected her own injuries onto him, probably because she felt like it was her fault. I mean like IDK that's just what I got out of it.

It's because of your profile picture. This song is about a mix of like deadly and disturbing things but like beauty and emotion and stuff and that vampire girl from adventure time has the same vibe
Roller champions brought me here! This song is amazing.
These songs are so relaxing........................................
This song is perfect
Oct. 2014 Vanity Fair brought me here, Melanie Martinez, Hot Tracks, p. 142.: "This song gives me chills." Had to find it. Maybe the story is that the girl and her boyfriend were in an accident (small plane crash). She survived but he did not, although in her dream he is alive but bandaged. She builds a "shrine" to him within herself when she wakes to find that she is the one in bandages while he is gone. Anyone else read it this way?
It was 2012 when I first hear this song and it still hits me the same way!! Good old times!!
