Should your dog sleep on your bed? That depends on your personal choice as some people don't like it because of fur or dirty blankets for example and that is fine. But if you don't want your dog sleeping on the bed to show you are the Alpha, that is disrespectful in the dog world.
The two sides of the debate are those who allow their dog on the bed and allow their dog to take over the bed, and those who do not let their dog on the bed to be the Alpha. Neither of these beliefs builds the relationship of being your dog's Dog Mother because puppies always sleep with their Mother and she expects them to respect her personal space and not disturb her when she is sleeping. Some Mothers are more tolerant about this than others. Oreo the Husky/Border Collie is learning this lesson.
If you allow your dog to take over the bed or it disturbs you while you sleep, your dog sees you as a younger sibling. If you are dominant in the way you claim your bed to get your dog off the bed, you are seen as a disrespectful older sibling. If you lay with and snuggle your dog before it goes to sleep and set up ground rules about your personal space while you sleep, your dog will see you as their Dog Mother. It is not about what you think you represent to your dog, it's about what your dog thinks you represent to them. A younger sibling they control, an older sibling who controls them with dominance, a friend who rewards them with treats, or their Mother who controls them with consistent and balanced assertive energy and thanks them with acceptance and affection.
It is okay if you would prefer your dog doesn't sleep on the bed due to fur or dirt or other personal reasons. If you can, let your dog sleep on its own bed or in a crate in your bedroom and make sure to give your dog lots of soft, gentle affection before you go to bed.
The relationship between dogs is based on trust and respect, not dominance. Dominance is only used to establish and maintain one's position within the family and with balanced dogs, even that is done out of and to create trust and respect. ✌️
