The bad thing is them leaving the fishing line attached to him he's going to get caught up on something or get wrapped around his body. I know he tried his best to help the fish and that's a great thing to do. But honestly this is one of the reasons why you need to have a diving knife with you whatever you go even if you're just going snorkeling. I do hope the little puffer fish is still alive and it's swimming around happy and healthy. But is that fishing line starts wrap around him it's going to get worse for him in the long run. I would say he probably should have left the puffer fish there or had his girlfriend go back and get a knife so they can cut fishing line. That or try to find a piece of trash or debris in the ocean to help cut it. Aluminum can a glass bottle something

1 People are not going to always bring something with them 24/7, that's just how things goes. You can't expect someone to always have something on them. 2 They went diving but we don't know how close their house is to the diving spot, what if it's a 5 hours drive back and forth making it 10 collective hours from going to take the knife and take it back. The best thing they could have done was to ask for someone to let them borrow a knife, but you can see how that wouldn't exactly go well/creep people out if two random strangers ask for a knife, and even if they gave them time to explain it was to help the fish there was no guarantee they would have let them borrow it anyway. The fish could have tried to swim away and by the time they were back he was gone. In some cases you can't do more than the bare minimum, you should be the one accepting that reality that not everything can be fixed just by doing the obvious choice.

Knife won't do anything. STAINLESS surgical scissors. Yes, underwater on every dive. No, I'm not a doctor, but I do teach scuba. Advanced divers should consider stainless surgical scissors in their kit. It will help you get out of fishing line, yourself. No, pufferfish don't "eject" spikes. They are some of the friendliest fish, and they are very poisonous if eaten, somewhat venmous, but not "deadly" if poked with their outer ... Wait, I just realized this site is called "Dodo". Never mind, fellow Dodos, let's just be happy in our ignorance, and look at pretty fish.

Awesome. It breaks my heart to see animals hurt because of negligent or careless people. I live in the desert...a desert that feeds free ranging cattle that supply our food chain. It's amazing how many party balloons leave the city, go up just out of sight, leak some helium, and fall to the desert. I find them often. But sometimes a beautiful little calf will find one and eat it. They are attracted to the pretty colors. Wildlife too. Releasing balloons at a party, or other event kills livestock and wildlife. It's careless, it's cruel.

They ONLY had snorkels, not dive gear and no tools, so they did an awesome thing! Cleaning our oceans are so important. Thank you both!!❤

I think that puffer understood pretty well it didn't inflate even when he touched it's face I honestly think he'd have been good to to work a little harder on that hook..but I can see it was rough out so easier said than done

A Porcupinefish! Their heads are so big, it's iconic. It might not have been the perfect rescue, but working fast puts less stress on the fish, and working smart lets him keep all his fingers. They're a _relatively relaxed_ breed of puffer, but they *can be somewhat aggressive,* so he was right to exercise caution. Also, they do have a _very_ sharp beak, *made to crack open shellfish.* So...best to handle the situation kind of like with a snapping turtle. If you find yourself in this kind of situation, consider calling the proper authorities, if possible, before trying something like this. Also, pufferfish toxin is deadly to humans, so....yeah. Be careful out there.
