Public school teachers should not have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to make ends meet.

True, but teachers are required to have a Bachelors Degree and normally another year or two for the credential. That means student loans. Many also only work 9 months out of the year. There are other ways they screw you too. You can work three years and only get ONE towards retirement because of the way they figure things. They aren't eligible for social security either. I agree about the disabled, but it is worse for teachers than the general population.

As a 30 year veteran teacher now retired I thank you for addressing this problem. My income stayed in proportion to when I first began teaching and I knew I would never own a home on my own. I believe that there is a war on education and educators as well as the family unit. Appealing to the powers that be about fairness and compassion will not see results in itself. Follow the money, the contracts (from food, landscaping, supplies, curriculum, administrative salaries) and the nepotism. Demand transparency and ethical practice in upper management. Stop districts from policing themselves. Investigate the plethora of whistleblower silencing that goes on. This is the tip of the iceberg. All blessings to you.

If you think public school teachers are struggling, you should see what many teachers are paid at private preschools. Sure, you pay a fortune for your kid to attend private preschool, but small business owners generally do not share the wealth with their employees. Low pay, no vacation days, and no benefits are commonly seen.

Public schools should be making followers and workers that don’t question anymore. We aren’t as innovative as we should be anymore. When I quit school, I did because it had nothing to do with learning. It was about following the program. It didn’t matter my grades if they didn’t like me taking a nap after I was done with the assignment or if they didn’t like my attendance. Failed for not being a robot. Schools stifle free thinking and independence. After quitting high school I went to college for electronics. A’s and B’s and was a better troubleshooter than anyone I’ve worked with. Why do I say that. Because I solved the problems others couldn’t. This from a failing student. School has nothing to do with learning at all. It’s all about memorizing books. Many failing to understand the medium and how it works. But they got the grade for being good robots.

Education suffers when teachers have to do anything else but focus all of their attention on their job. In addition to being paid well teachers should also meet rigorous academic standards. I trained teachers for many years in Germany and when they came to me and I asked them why they wanted to be teachers I replied to answers like " because I like children" with 'that's not enough, if you do not have a burning desire to make people smarter and wiser you can't really be a good teacher'.

While I wholeheartedly agree that all Americans should be compensated with relevant wages and benefits, the teaching licenses of public school educators in the Sooner State - in reference to the Sooners, American settlers who staked their claims in formerly Indigenous-owned lands until the "Indian" Appropriations Act of 1889 authorized the Land Rush of 1889 and the opening of the land to settlement - are being threatened by Oklahoma state superintendent Ryan Walters if they refuse to teach bronze age mythology as it "relates to American history." In light of this present darkness, I would contend that passing an appropriate bill - possibly expanding and clarifying the Establishment Clause - to mitigate future religious right swipes towards blatant christofascism and the heinous debilitation of the teaching profession is our most urgent public education priority today as equality and equity access have simultaneously been usurped from the most important humans in the public education system: the students and their families. We must all stand up to these nefarious politicians and swipe left on their downright anti-Christ and anti-American exploitation.

Actually, I think they should. Why? They get TWO MONTHS OFF in the summer. I don't know any other job that gives that much time off. If you want a paycheck yearround, work yearround. I know and am related to several teachers. If you live within your means, they seam to be doing just fine. Plus, teachers are still one of the last places where the job offers a retirement package. - I think the real issue with teaching in general is "class size" and "shitty parents". If classroom were limited to 15-20 students, I think a teachers workload would be totally manageable. And if parents taught their kids to respect their teachers (and other adults), teachers jobs would be far less stressful....

Americans by and large, though with notable exceptions, do not believe in education. Anyone who disputes this admittedly very general statement is either dishonest or refuses to face reality. If we really cared about it, which we do not, we would do two things which are as follows: insist on better teachers, and take better care of them. We do not however, and that is the evidence I offer in support of the previously made statement. Better teachers would mean higher academic standards, which means our children would have to work harder. It would also mean an end to a lot of the useless indoctrination of one kind or another, be it from the left or from the right, because one can EASILY spend the whole school day learning to read, write and speak properly, and how to do arithmetic and mathematics. For contrast and for health, there is physical education. An hour or two of that per day would not hurt us either. “Mens sana in corpore sano”, “A healthy mind in a healthy body”. It is not a bad concept, so get out there and sweat. Then hit the books (or the screens) again.

If you are a liberal and non-religious, you are targeted and picked apart under a microscope. Disability is preferable than making less than half of what you should as a teacher (especially since a good teacher works 24/7).
