@@MWhaleK It's worse than that. Corporations get money for prisoners. They have to PAY workers. Money coming in vs. money going out. Corporations want more money coming in, less money going out. The whole system strongly wants to maximize the price they charge for the product while minimizing pay to workers.

I totally agree with Senator Saunders!!! All people, especially young people, need quality educational opportunities. I love that Vermont is including prison inmates and prison guards in educational classes. It's another kind of crime in the US that so many people are doing nothing that will prepare them for a useful future when they're released after serving a prison sentence. Thanks, Bernie, for all that you to make a better world!!💙

In 1976, I worked my senior year from 4am - noon six days a week as a breakfast cook, went to school half day till 3:30 pm then had band, theatre, show choir and gymnastics practices throughout the year. I was happy. I had money, I got away from an abusive household and I learned at a very young age, nothing is easy but if you really want something…work for it. When I started my first company, I hired high school kids to give them a chance to learn work ethic and set a good example as their boss and mentor.

Yes, even in Nevada way back in time, I had the opportunity to "work" outside of school but had to prove my parents were below a certain income level to justify me being allowed to work while still in school. That was an embarrassment for my father who did not make much money and was a labourer. While my fellow students had parents who were planning to send them to college, I worked to learn how to become an employee. A very good and helpful approach to sending graduate students out into the real world. Thank you, Bernie.

Every single high school student should finish high school with the skills he needs to survive, like bricklayer, welding, plumber, electrician, truck, heavy equipment or tractor driver, etc. The same applies for inmates. College should be optional but the bottom line is that by 18 years old, every young person should be able to help his/her family and support himself/herself. That will help to make the american dream a reality and America a better place to live.

"The schools we go to are reflections of the society that created them. Nobody is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them. Nobody is going to teach you your true history, teach you your true heroes, if they know that that knowledge will help set you free. Schools in amerika are interested in brainwashing people with amerikanism, giving them a little bit of education, and training them in skills needed to fill the position the capitalist system requires. As long as we expect amerika's schools to educate us, we will remain ignorant." -- Assata Shakur

Educate America! While we desperately need a skilled workforce, we also need a more technologically educated society. Raise the taxes on the deadbeats (billionaires) and cut corporate welfare to pay for expanding education and paying teachers a true wage that will bring more capable people back into education! Here many of the kids use the school time jobs as a means of getting out of school. Future Business Leaders of America could put more influence into the selection of those jobs to build actual skill sets and expand great training for our kids! Our vocational-technical departments need a serious overhaul. The instructors here don't bother giving the kids a decent vocabulary, much less a skill. Expanding vocational departments with up to date technologies and properly paying instructors will help jump start many careers! The training you speak of in the corrections system draws closer to the idea of rehabilitation. What we have in general is psychologically destructive and financially abusive to families. For profit colleges should have to supply qualified instructors for such programs. That would be an adequate use of their lavish profits. Hope to meet you someday Senator!

I am an educator, higher ed. What we need most is government funding restored so that the business model can be appropriately limited. That way we stop catering to enrollments by pleasing the buyer (students). Remove the use of student evaluations from any faculty evaluation for promotion process. That has always served to blackmail faculty against course difficulty and grading structure... ultimately weakening the educational process. Universities need cash and that means enrollments and that means making students happier. Secondly, restoring government funding will allow students to go to college without taking on 2 jobs while in school (limited their study time) only to have debt for life. Fund education not at the top, but at the bottom. Then regulate university practices forced to adopt capitalistic business models which are really not suitable for an educational system.

Not people whom don't have a child the school system. We don't receive any benefits from their parents or gaudian. During COVID-19, the teachers was being paid full time for one hour computer time/ teaching the children at home, sorry Sentor, I don't see any benefits, giving hand outs all the time. I am not claiming professional knowledge and experience, but I have looked over some of these things. The pregnant mother and children need adequate care and nutrition every day. Many children probably need tutoring and homeschooling to help them to come up to standard with academics. Children may be attracted to a nice apprenticeship program rather than apprenticeship seeming like punishment. For different reasons children can turn to intoxication problems, sex problems, and possibly criminal activity. It is not unusual for a child or young person to get wild ideas. There have been reports or rumors of unreasonable conditions in prison and sometimes serious crimes committed against inmates. Prevention and Preparedness What are the guidelines and proper standards?
