In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Serú Girán.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Pedro Aznar is the Bass player, if you get to react to Seru Giran's Eiti Leda, the cinema-something version, you'll see him at 17 years old. He played with Pat Metheny and with so many other artists.

You should investigate the history of Charly Garcia, singer, pianist and composer of Seru Giran, La Maquina de hacer pájaros, and Sui Generis (and the most famous argentinian rock musician) He was a child prodigy who played classical music in theaters and had a perfect pitch. At the age of twelve, he graduated as a piano, theory and solfeggio teacher. He put his life at risk and sang songs against the government during a dictatorship. Kidnapped a corpse from a morgue to be to be discharged from military service. Charly is a mad genius admired for people like The Rolling Stones or Marilyn Manson.

This is an Argentinian Supergroup, like Asia for example, where all the members were renowned top notch musicians. They were led by Charly García arguably one of the two greatest rock geniuses from Argentina ( Luis Alberto Spinneta is the other one, more proggy and jazzy) And the bassist is a multitalented prodigy named Pedro Aznar who was 19 at that time. Later on he would be invited to play in The Pat Metheny Group. Amazingly he was not asked to play bass but other instruments. He is also an amazing singer and lyricist.

. Argentinan Prog Rock is a Binary Star system, with amazing musicians revolving around Charly Garcia and Luis Alberto Spinetta. Everybody played and collaborated with everyone's bands and projects. This is a fun rabbit hole, look up and keep track of the members of all these bands. Pedro Aznar, the frettless you hear has an amazing career for example

Seru Giran was starting to turn to a more pop sound (as you did - nearing the 80s🙃) Still several of the numbers in this, in their previous and their following albums had a strong prog/rock component - like in "Los sobrevivientes": kzread.info/dash/bejne/oXl616lspsKtY7Q.html or another one that has been recommended: "A los jovenes de ayer": kzread.info/dash/bejne/n62C2I-inZjffco.html, or many numbers on their first album - still Seru Giran - a super band - had a mixture of styles, brought by each of their four musicians, already famous on their own styles (except the bassist Pedro Aznar which was an unknown 17 or 18 year old then)

In Argentina Al Di Meola was very well known in the late 70s. Same with Pat Metheny trio. Besides, post punk stuff arrived later, in the eighties.

One thing that I listened from other "reactiion" guy is that progressive rock was hugely popular in Argentina. Seru Giran was probably the most popular band in the early 80s. Also, you have to understand that we had a bloody dictatorship (1976-1983) that killed many thousans of people and they have an strict censorship. However this guys produced songs that talked about all the things that were happening during this sad time. It was symbolic, but you have to be an idiot to not understand the meaning of the lyrics. For some kind of miracle they were never censored or prosecuted. For this reason and all the music that Charly produced for more than 50 years He is for many our rock hero. And he jump from a 9th floor to a swimming pool and survived!

Please, reacto to more songs from them!. "Seminare" from the same album. Pedro Aznar is the bassist. He's a musical genius. His fretless was a regular Faim bass (a low budget local brand) but he took all the frets out by himself. When he was in his teenage years recorded a demo playing and singing Beatles covers... that demo somehow ended up in Pat Metheny's hands... some time later Pedro received a call from Pat (or his manager, can't remember) and was asked to be a member of Pat Metheny's band.... Pedro said: I would love to... but you already have a bassist. And they answered: ok, can you play percussion? And they auditioned him playing percussion over a phone call from the US to Argentina.... that way he became a member of Pat Metheny's group between 1983-1985 and 1989-1992 (singing and playing percussion, bass, guitar and sax)

Charly Garcia is the mind behind Serú Giran and La Máquina De Hacer Pájaros two of the best progressive bands from Argentina. He's responsible for all those musical arrangements and interesting chords progressions. For example the keyboard section in this song is all his, he has a classical music background and started playing piano at the age of 4. We should include 'Instituciones' from Sui Generis (his first band) as a semi-progressive kind of album.
