This is the composition reworded by Shailendra as Ketaki Gulab Juhi and the film was named Basant Bahar for this rag. Bhimsenji taught Manna Dey how to defeat him in the jugalbandi. What humility and simplicity. विद्या विनयेंन शोभते।

Thanks so much for sharing this towering performance. It is at once exhilirating, uplifting and soulful. A performance that makes his name = Bhimsen - prescient :-) I have had the pleasure of listening to Bhimsen-ji several times but always in the 80s and 90s (since I was 14). This was the first clip I ever listened to of a young Bhimsen. What a treat this is - he is a sheer force of nature. He was always forceful like a Niagara but this performance is like coming down with the energy of a 1000 suns. Once again thanks - this is a treat!!

This sounds like the fifties. Many Bahar variants heard here including Bageshree Bahar, Shuddh Bahar and Bahar. The drut has the same intensity as his Bahar - Kaliyan Sang Karata Rangaraliyan. Later the style was more relaxed. We are fortunate that we can hear such gems thanks to the grace of music lovers who preserved them and now share them selflessly!!

Sounds like a much later period to me. Also tabla player is quite clearly Nana Mulye, who, I believe started accompanying Bhimanna in the 70s. Harmonium player may well be Purushottam Walawalkar. Also, in the 50s-60s, Bhimsenji sang from D#-E, while this is closer to D (which also may be due to a technical defect; in the 80s, Bhimanna mostly sang from C#)

Overwhelming! This is not the later Bhimsen Joshi one hears;I remember a concert I heard in 1961 where his performance was more sophisticated- but the sheer raw energy he projects here- always combined with technical virtuosity- makes this quite oustanding. Thanks for uploading!

This is a lovely recording. It's interesting how Panditji has retooled the traditional Jaipur-Atrauli vilambit 'Barajo na maane' into a drut bandish. He has done something similar with 'Dhana dhana bhaag' in Gorakh Kalyan.

This is beautiful! I can tell by his voice that he was pretty young at that time, but I was just blown away from his rendition. The way he intensified himself throughout the performance is what touched me again and I have so much respect for him amongst other vocalists. Well done!

This is the most beautiful abandoned singing with purest of swaras in place that can only be imagined as at the pinacle of music achievement. Panditji holds all the time to perfect faithfulness to every single matra while the everyone would be pushiing him to the climax at each taal. He would be in his 55 ish here since the matching performer on Tabla is Ustad Zakir Hussain, who would be in his 20+ish in late 1970s. I have heard Panditji from his 1950 Multani, Miya Malhar and Yaman. But this performance 25+ years later is the best rendition. Zakir matched it but was pushed to his full potential of pure classical tabla. Lovely. Thank you crore times for posting this Bharat Ratna at his best. Salutes to the greatest Hindustani vocalist yet in the 20th and 21st centuries. This is heavenly performance of music. Zakir too is so good and may be in classical definition of pure tabla, this would be his best too. Walawalkarji too geared up to follow beautifully. Wholesome!

A small correction I would like to do. Here Pandit Shashikant Mulye (Nana Mulye ) is accompanied on Tabla not Zakir.

Maybe Yamini should indicate when was this recorded, instead of making folks speculate (unless that is the intention...but that is not helpful). This is important because Pandit Joshi sang over multiple decades and like most great artists he evolved in style and excelled in each of those styles. Doing that, he has become the essential part of what is Hindustani Gayaki today. So from the Historical perspective, it is important to know the 'context' and dates of his performances. What do I say about his performance? 'Razor sharp' that is one thing which comes to my mind; in all probability early in his career. Because when I listened to him so many time in Pune in the 80s and 90s; he had already graduated to very elaborate, dedicated Vilambit where one would enjoy most beauty of the raga in that phase. In those late years, his voice was of course in lower scales and staying there for a longer time. This rendition is different. It reminds me his Malkauns from early days (kzread.info/dash/bejne/mplllJh-da3WmcY.html) where he is shown to be so young and the music is also so different, of so fine quality. This singing is similar in that style but possibly of later age. As few other more knowledgeable folks have commented, multiple raagas of Bahar variant are invoked here. My personal preference is more for sticking with one single elaboration.

kaafi baad tak basant bahar pt ji aisa hi gayan mein laate rahe. Lekin yeh thora behtar hai . Ecclectic. Sahi baat hai 1956 ke multani jo aapne hariballabh ke mele men pesh kiya kafi mel lagta hai, halanki raag aalag hai.baad ki ek maestros choice ki ek recording is perhaps more melliflous and seamLESS. THANKS FOR THE UPLOADING.the entire audience is engaged it appears.

The speed of the taans and ambience is much like the 1956 Multani also available on KZread at kzread.info/dash/bejne/mpt5treLkrandJs.html (Nainan me aan-baan). Lot of people murmuring and at least 2 accompanying Panditji. The same composition of 1992 is also there where the pace is calm. Both are gems in their own right and very very profound. Therefore this Basant Bahar seems to be more or less contemporary with the 1956 Multani.

I doubt that. The voice texture and mannerisms make me think this from the 1980s. Also, the typical accompaniment of Purushottam Walawalkar on the harmonium is evident, pointing, again, to the 80s. It is most likely Nana Mulye on the tabla. Also, Madhav Gudi is certainly on the tanpura, giving vocal support.
