Pt. 7 HOW TO TRAIN A HARRIS HAWK: getting ready to fly free

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Ok now we are finishing up our creance line work , ironing out the nerves a little more and a few last minute behavioural checks before the hawk is flown free. I’ve fitted a bell and transmiter mount . Almost there

This series is addictive. I can't wait for ep 8. I wish I had the time to dedicate to this hobby. If I was lucky enough to be training a Harris hawk, I wouldn't have to look any further than your videos

The white tail kite is incapable of attacking a face, he would bite me in the nose if I stuck it in his face but never footed my face, the glove yeah, but I would test to see if he would bite me in the eye all the time. he always nipped me in the nose. He'd peck everything out of curiosity. Still have a lot of questions about training in general, like what lure you can you use across the buzzard and true hawk range. I want to get my education permit and do displays for a while ngl.

Hi Dave, I just want to ask you a question about females Harris hawks? How are they different from males? My friend's got one, she's imprinted on him and she's never flown to different people. When I first started training her, she was (and still is) aggressive towards me. We've known each other for a half a year (with the bird) so I thought she could be calmer now. I'm helping him with her because he doesn't have much time for her. When flying (always in the garden) she is aggressive and she doesn't let me control her (grab the jesses). That's why I am still flying her on a creance. I once tried flying her on a creance in a meadow but she was very distracted by difference of the environment. She flew with my friend free a few times but that was long time ago. I'm afraid to fly her free because of controlling the bird and her aggression towards me. Then I got a new glove but she got even more aggressive towards me and the glove. Whenever I try to put her on my fist (new glove) from the perch, she just grab my glove hardly with her talons and then try to put them into my another hand or my face. We switched the gloves and she's more calm again. Should I let her use onto the new glove and just 'survive' her aggression? Why is she behaving like that? I'm sorry if there are mistakes or you cannot understand what I want to say because English is my second language. Thank you. Your fan from the Czech Republic.

Hiya; the worst place you could possibly work with that bird is the garden where it is kept and weathered ; it’s going to be worse there with you than anywhere else . Females once mature can be vary aggresive to anyone who isn’t the person they normally work with , sometimes even flying a across a whole field to attack a stranger and drive them away. You need to be very confident in your abilities to not get talons in your face with this bird and only work with her in a new place where she is unfamiliar ; here go back to basics of manning her on the glove as you walk around this new field etc , then go back to basic creance work but be careful ! Regular hunting and catching game would be your best option with her by far

Great reply Dave, I have a rescue female which was nearly dead when I got her. She was way under weight and super aggressive. No she is wellon the road to recovery and getting used to the fact that no matter what she does to me I will still work with her. I think Harris's are smart enough to know that they can intimidate you. If you need to do something with her, go for it and don't go in half hearted.

Again a great Video (as this whole series is) on the next steps plus repetition of previous steps and stages. Maybe you should do something with animals and people for a living.. 😉😅😂 No, honestly well done again! Makes me looking forward to picking up my Harris Hawk even more! Just a question for you, out of your experience, would you say a female HH is in general not suitable for demo-work, "Hawk walks" or "Falconry experience days" or what ever people call it? Are they tending to become aggressive/dangerous with others? I know my female golden Eagle can be quite jealous, especially around this time of the year.. Regards Andy
