I’ve just taken on a 10yr old male HH as my first bird and thanks to your video Dave I went outside and was persistent and finally got the hood on him for the first time. (Now applied it on and off about 10 times tonight ) Thanks 🙏🏻

I am training a F/ HH at the minute also Dave, the weather at this time of the year i feel does make it a little more difficult (weight wise and all that entails). I have her flying free now for about two weeks but because of two very bad storms here in the last two weeks it is hard to get some continuity. As regard head flicking i have seen some of my old Birds do it from time to time but as you said not as often as young Birds. Love the videos Dave, keep them coming. Cheers and thank you.

A whole week it’s been like that ! Only noticed coz I watched it on big telly!!

I've managed this week to hood my kestrel after trying for a year! He got a new hood and I've persevered. Conventional methods mean he grabs it and throws it at me, so I have to bring it up till his beak is straight up and hoopla it on (slowly) . But he's worn it every day this week so it must be how he thinks it's done. We will keep practising.

Really good to watch some detail, those little tweet are very different to the screems my hawk gave, mine was 19 weeks, he thought I wanted to eat him. Brilliant Dave very enjoyable watching.,

Yes Nigel was more like that! I think it’s because this one had seen the breeder in the aviary several times

I haven't trained a bird for 20 years. The last one was a parent reared female ferruginous, she bit me on the nose on the first day of manning (still have the scar), so I started hooding her. That little Harris you have is a cracking looking bird. Looking forward to see how he goes. Great vid 👍

​@falconry.davesharpenatureboy Yes it hurt but I had a spar before that, and she footed me once on the hand, that was agony. Lost the spar in the 3rd season, she hit a tree flying a magpie. It was a cracking bird though. When I get some more time in the future, I will get back into it. I will probably get a red tail rather than a Harris. It's nice that he is easy, but i can understand it would be more helpful to the viewers if he wasnt.. So you can teach them more, when they get stuck. Great job either way! Would you spudarisation a shortwing?

Nice Dave Thanks for all this great content. One day I will have a bird from 16 weeks and train it for hunting rather than pest control. I will need to get it past the wife first.😊 Thanks again Dave that little boy looks great.

Hehe; you can hear the sea in them hehe. I do yes so the hawk Doesn’t freak out in the morning when o pick it up from the mews . Once it’s relaxed as I approach it on the weathering perch then I leave hood off at night

I’ve been wanting to get a bird for a while now , I’ve read many books studied falconry for the past 3 years and I still get anxious about the thought of buying one. Purchased field Marshall telemetry 2 years ago, build the mews, bought all the equipment , even secured a permission for 29 fields so far and I still feel like I need to do more! There’s so much to falconry people don’t even realise ! At least there’s more support down country, I live in Cumbria and the help around here is next to non. I’m forever great full for your videos 🙂

Fabulous video! This would have been so so helpful before we got our female Harris. We've actually not screwed much up and she's a great hunter who trusts us. We were told not to worry about the hood in the beginning as it was too early, and then when it was a struggle the same person told me I should have started with the hood earlier. Sigh... We're nearing the end of her 2nd hunting season. Would you recommend we re-start the hood training during the molt or at the start of the next season? Thanks so much!

Well done you’ve got this far so doing well! Try next season soon as you take her up again. It may still seem impossible but by then I may have a video out to go over hooding already hood shy birds …

Hi Dave, have you ever done the test of putting chickens not far from a Harris (by which I mean a Harris well accustomed to humans and animals), if you have already experienced how it is Does she behave? Want to chase them or indifferent to poultry? Thanks a lot.

No as when I had chucks my birds weren’t at home but it will help , maybe not hundred percent….

Hi Dave how thick is that leash the leash that I have bought is so thick it’s hard to tie in a knot it’s too stuffed but that was the one I was told to get for a fhh

Same thickness as on my bald eagle … unless you’ve got a bird that’s a chewer thick leashes are horrid . It’s a paracord leash , maybe 5mm thick
