If the whole point of this exercise is to evaluate the competency of this bike then it must remain stock throughout the test.With that said,changing the plug and jetting the carb as necessary to put it in proper tune is understandable.

I'm extremely impressed with the detail of your log keeping and tip my hat for keeping it up. With that in mind , and as you've already said, keeping it factory for as long as possible is the only way to truly see what living with the thing is like.

Thanks G, one think that spreadsheet should tell you is that you should never take your scooter to a shop, shop maintenance is all ready half the price of the scooter. This is the reason why scooters are popular in 3rd world countries is because everyone can do their own maintenance. If you do not know how to do something there is something called the internet and you can learn lots of things.

I want to thank you for all the thought and effort you put into your videos. They have been extremely helpful. I put a 50mm bbk on mine and had compounding issues since the first test ride. This has got to be the most interesting series I've watched yet on youtube, these scooters have fascinated me since I was a kid keeping mine alive. Being an old school Carb guy, to me changing jets to get the correct fuel mixture based on your locations altitude is perfectly acceptable. Someone in Denver would definitely need a different main jet from someone riding this at the beach due to the drastic change in altitude. Thanks again for all this detailed data capture too! I'm on the fence of getting one myself!

I love the meticulous data points you're keeping track of. I keep oil change and service logs for my camaro but never thought to do a fuel economy study. Mostly because I have a fairly heavy foot.

fuel economy studies would take your heavy foot into account over the long run. I mean, you probably spend more time idling than you realize (I did) and that effects fuel economy more than the lead foot.

@5:53 If you want to know fuel economy in L/100km, what we use in Europe, you can count fuel amount in gallons divided with miles travelled on a tank, multiplied with 100, multiplied with 3.7854, divided with 1,6093. Or use this : =D3/F3*100*3,7854/1,6093

This experiment and videos are fantastic. Thank you. Very well done and scientific. It’s not just a video of some d bag saying their opinion. Your videos have substance and objectivity. Something not found these days. The suspension question is a great thing to track. Hardly anyone ever discusses suspension and/or small vs larger riders.

I really appreciate what you are doing here, this sort of consumer testing is invaluable and I really wish when I bought my first scoot as a teen your videos had been around. Kewp up the good work! Lastly as far as suggestions go I was wondering if you could put a sniffer on it to measure noncombusted gasses exiting the engine (how efficiently does it burn fuel over it's lifetime) also apart from the videos if we could get some high quality pictures of the bike and any defects that come up (seat seam starts to split or maybe a plastic part fatigues and you can sew stress cracks) because that is also important

leave it as it is.don't modify it.we like to see it standard. my bike here never had a valve adjustment. carburetor never adjusted. the only service it has is change oil. as engine is concern. it is my daily driver. the chain is never change. It run for 3yr 37000km. only thing i change brake pad and tire.it runs great!!👍👍👍.

depending on the bike; 37K km; it should be well on its way to its 3rd valve adjustment; at the absolute minimum; its second. if you think it runs great now; adjust the valves. you'll be happy with the results.

In my country labor cost it's around 70 dollar a hr, you make a fortune (lol), love your channel 👍😎

you need to take into account cost of living, cost of owning a shop and cost to become a certified mechanic including necessary tools :)

These video's are great, and I'm really tempted to get a cheap 50cc scooter for back and fore to work, (four miles each way across town and traffic), rather than use my 125cc scoot when I have to take stuff to work, also I'm lucky if I get to 20mph, so yes the more info you can give out the more useful your "experiment" will be, so many thanks for your hard work.

yay! thanks for the video ^.^ I agree with the decision to not do major mods until something breaks; someone who would be using this bike solely because they can't afford something better (my interpretation of your experiment goals from video 1) would also only be able to do modifications at those times. I also agree that opening up the airbox, especially during the break-in period, would compromise the data-gathering at this point; also the amount of tuning required once you do it would be difficult to keep track of. unsealing the carb (removing the Idle mixture screw cap; replacing the float bowl bolts) I wouldn't consider to be a modification, but I've never been a fan of sealed carbs myself.

from what I can tell, the stock sealed carb is a clone of the Keihin PD19J some of the stock carbs even have PD19J stenciled on the manifold side of the carb. Honda's method of measuring droop is to put a person on the seat, and press down on the suspension, then let it rest, measure from the external shock seal to the nearest mounting point. then once you have that measured, have the person stand up, then lift the bike, and let it rest back on the suspension, without pressing down. the difference of these two numbers is the 'official' droop measurement. I've always used the measurement between the mounting bolts on the rear shock. since my bike uses inverted shocks, I usually measure from the top of the shock seal, to the bottom of the tree.

Just bought the new Icebear vision scooter. I love it.

That's crazy a few years back these scooters were $400. At 1k km you already spent that in repairs.

I just bought a scooter also. I'm going to do the same as you hoping that mine will get the best chance it can as well. I got an Amigo F-10 150 but it still has the same GY6 motor I guess, so it should be relatively the same in most respects. This should be fun. The outfit that sold it to me suggests I change the oil 3 times before I get a thousand miles on it though. That must be a big thing in breaking them in.

The ultimate contribution to this experiment would be a reference group. You don´t happen to know a set of youtubers who would jump on the challenge to buy a new suzuki, honda or vespa scooter, copy the spreadsheet and adopt the concept, just to see the difference in costs, maintenance and problems occuring? :) Because I do think that's a question many of us have.. :) Awesome channel man!!

Not gonna lie I gun my tao Tao at full throttle everywhere I go. Thing seems to be losing a little bit of power at around 600 km. Once it’s warmed up it has almost full power. I also did not do a second oil change, the first being the PDI oil change, until around 550km.

Yes, I generally regard the throttle as an on/off button. Definitely binary.

I've got a small dealership that I've sold these that for years The biggest thing that I've ran into as of the last few years is the carburetors are no longer adjustable on the air fuel mixture screw having to replace every single one of those as well as one out of every 10 seems to be overcharging and I have to either replace both the stator and the rectifier or just the rectifier but half of the rectifiers that I get in won't drop the voltage enough so they will keep overcharging the battery and killing it. maybe you could go into more detail on the electrical because there's not a lot of information out there it seems on these half wave stator systems. Awesome videos and google doc keep it up.

the carb of the Tao Tao 50 is a clone of a Kihien PD19J, most parts interchange. you can also use a bolt remover to remove the bung over the idle-mixture screw. the screw is actually there, just under a thin brass bung. the PD19J adjustable needle was a direct replacement on mine, and unsealing the carb took me about 30 minutes, just had to replace the shear-bolts they used to seal it in the first place.

Excellent video series - what a great concept. Just a word on fuel economy. I think 112 mpg for a modern scooter is poor. Among my bike collection I have a 1985 Yamaha T80 Townmate. I have checked fuel consumption by brimming the tank at a motorway service area and refuelling at another service area over 100 miles further on. Once home check the distance between service areas on Google maps and look at the second receipt for amount of fuel used. Bearing mind I am riding the bike at max throttle, I am still achieving just about 140 mpg. Also, this was on the way back from camping in the Lake District so I had quite a lot of extra weight. I would expect a modern, low capacity, lightweight scooter to be giving at least 120 mpg. Look forward to following the updates. Oh, and please keep your Tao Tao absolutely stock so it is a real test of the bike as it left the factory - no mods other than fitting the best spark plug and oil. Just my view. Keep up the great work.

Is an American gallon not less than an Imperial /uk gallon ,can be confusing in MPG results

On a side note my mechanic suggested also to wait until 3000 miles to have him change roller weights but to leave carb and air filter stock and not to get muffler until mine breaks and falls off which it will

I think that upgrades after the break in period is a great idea as long as you consider the cost relative to the value of the scooter. I think anyone purchasing this scooter as a primary means of transportation would be willing to purchase jets or modify the air box, but I doubt they would want to spend the money for a carburetor.

they may not want to spend money on a carb, but knowing that its a clone of a carb they can easily get parts for would be important. even if the stock carb is a sealed variant.

So when are you doing the first modifications? Adding to the log like how it improved the top speed or ,decreased your fuel mileage. First mods tou should do: cold air intake, big bore kit, performance exhaust, and maybe play around with the CVT. Love the vidoes!!

I guess it falls under how you like the scooter - seat comfort? Also durability and comfort of the hand grips. You know whatever. Mirrors plastic trim etc. Great videos!

Modding performance parts can be fun but it will introduce variables that will really throw off your ability to maintain its reliability while comparing it to its own baseline. for example; I upgraded the bore and cylinder, and the compression was too high to rotate with the cold engine with the battery and starter, the piston wouldn't make the revolution and fire the plug .and the kickstarter gears literally shattered when i tried to kick it over almost broke my heel the engine kicking back at me. So i had to purchase a higgher CCA battery to produced enough power to turn it over, and even then these batteries only last 3 cold starts before it needs a hard charge or a jumper pack rated for a car. these days i just keep my litium jumper under the scooter seat because the battery doesn't like turning it over at all it was one of the 90 dollar MMG "high output" ones to.

That music gets me every time 😂. I hum it to keep myself sane while working on my scoot Suspension is interesting. On my Taotao 150, it's great. Its kinda stiff, but it actually travels and articulates decently. The rear shocks really dont do excellent, but they handle well. On my sisters 50.....i dont know if im not heavy enough to compress the rear shocks, or if im too heavy and they're bottoming out, but MAN it sucks. You feel every little bump, dip and divot. Theres maybe two inches of travel on the front and its way too linear. Either its too stiff, or youre bottoming it out. Im kinda wondering what some aftermarket shocks would do

I have a Yamaha Aerox 155cc scooter in Thailand - 15bhp, an easy 60mph, top speed about 75mph and I regularly achieve Imperial MPG 115 which I believe is about 96 of your US MPG. Sometimes a smaller engine just doesn't pay. It did cost about the equivalent of $2300 though.

My 2013 honda Megapro ( GL 150 cc ) with carbureted engine and 5 speed transmission still getting about 94 MPG ( 40 km/L ) running on 92 octane shell super ( indonesian spec shell gasoline ). Top speed at 116 kmh ( 72 mph ) at 9.000 rpm 5th gear full throttle

Thanks for the idea bro. I purchased a used Baotian boom still the same qmb139 engine before I only knew basic scooter maintence but this scooter was beat to hell the kid put a 100cc big bore kit before the 3000km mark I had to replace the whole variator the rollers were chewed up the starter motor was ground up on the tip that catches the bendex I had to put in a new carb cuz adjustments just weren't working now seems to run ok but thanks GARRETT SEEINGS cuz without u I'd be stuck with a giant paper weight as my wife liked to call it in the begining

I got a 2020 pony taotao an the belt is rubbing on something but can't figure out what I broke a belt an put new one on but still is rubbing for some strange reason an can't find out why have any ideas??

When it towards failure let's mod it to make it better, but you're making me want to get one to play with

hi i have a lexmoto scout 49 2011 i have asked a question about this before about it not wanting to start but just keeps turning over with spark fuel and every thing else but it wont run but if i use the kick start it starts first time but shortly after this it now only starts on the button whenever it is warm (been ridden for 20 mins or so) i think this might be choke but i have tried before putting my hand over the air intake and that didn't help any suggestions thank you

Hello, I have a 2016 Tao Tao I got for free and got it to run and seems fine except I to do service again but the big issue is I don’t have a title for it and in Florida I’m told I need one, what can or should I do with it?

Just hit 2,000 kilometers on Mr. Scoot Scoot (my Tao Tao) . I paid 700 for it and had to get new starter (70 bucks) with only 1500 kilometers. I am in 800 dollars total and have had it 3 months. It is my Only transportation as I am poor.

Keep track of the 1st time you hear the Front and back breaks squeak(Miles).

50cc scooters are good for having some fun riding around town or basic transportation to and from work. The Tao Tao scooters are cheap because they are basic operating systems (air/fuel/spark). You need at least some mechanical knowledge to keep these bikes running tip top. If you spend more money, you get fuel injection, water cooled, etc. But for the money, it’s a decent bike. I have 2 of them.

1267 miles muffler manifold nuts came off again gotta buy them again....I'm on taotao 150cc power max belt replacement at 1153 miles cost me 53 for belt $40 for install but I already had transmission open for them was going to self install realised I dont have impact gun

Most metric guys use l/100km, nice project tho

What gas are you using? Regular ethanol free, or premium with ethanol?

@Garret Seesing De-restricting it down the road sounds great after broken in. IF (big IF) it is legal. Here in KS that makes it no longer a "Moped" and then becomes a "Motorcycle" Taxes, Tag, Registration, License, and Insurance issues change. Best to show the cost and struggle of staying Legal because it is relevant to the over all cost of ownership. Also, could you highlight your daily logs where you had an issue with the scooter?

I'm thinking the compression gain has a little more to do with the break-in of the engine. Possibly the piston rings weren't seated yet. Belt longevity is directly linked to how a person rides. I really like Gates Power-link belts personally. I don't carry a belt with me because it would be a drag to carry all the tools you need to change a belt with you all the time. I'm currently working back in the automotive industry. What can I say? they made me an offer I couldn't refuse!

Garret Seesing Thank u for answering. The channel is going to really grow. The fuel line on the Toyota, I noticed u used a tool to put like a round bubble on the end of the tube so the rubber hose won’t slip off. I don’t think I have one in my flaring kit. But super handy. And safe especially for fuel lines.

What is the longest lasting scooter?So from what i am seeing so far..Owning any scooter seems to be a roll of the dice. If i am going to half to do this type of upkeep on a 50cc anything i feel i would be better served by a motorised bicycle. Why fiddle with a carb? Ecotrans fuel injection? Oil cooler?

Amazing to see just how much you are recording. Did you do something to fix the compression, or did it break in and fix itself? Also have you considered adding a calculation in for gas cost savings compared to an alternative mode of transportation? Maybe just your average mpg of your pinto?

I think it just might be "breaking in" although personally i've never seen a jump in compression that dramatic. Tracking consumption compared to another video is an interesting idea. Maybe i should choose a super average vehicle to compare it to. Nissan Sentra?

@@Scooter_911 as far as comparative milage, yeah you could go for an average scenario, but then again this series is about YOUR experience living with a taotao, so I wouldn't it make more sense to measure your own alternative mode of transportation? I mean, nothing stops you from doing both, but hopefully you get my point.

11:15 the top speed probably will be between 40 and 43 mph when completely unrestricted. about 65 to 70 kmh. here in germany, where i live, those scooters do have a restricted speed limit of 45 kmh / 28 mph. Several people like to modify them, take those restrictions away (wether for fuel economy or it gets faster) and then, the topspeed is around 65 kmh / 40 mph, maybe a lil' higher. but - it's fordbidden ;) AND if it is NOT forbidden where you are.....it would also be better break it in unrestricted and keep the speed that low. because then, when continously driving along with 20 to 25 mph, the transmission can switch into the highest gear and the engine doesn't need to rev that high :)

I this question is off topic of the video. I need one answer to a question before I leave my scooter on the side of the road after 1 year and a half use. I need to replace the stator. It's a 12 coil direct current. It as 3 yellow wires and a loose blue/white wire. I found one similar for $150. That's too much. Others I'm finding doesn't match. If it does it has more wires than needed. Like a 5th green(ground) wire. Can I connect it and use it without the extra green wire since my scooter doesn't require one?

You can give it a try. The stator could technically ground through the bolts on the engine but i'm not 100% on that. What kind of scooter is it?

Great experiment... Just for curiosity as an extra metric, maybe get it a cheap ebay/amazon /wish tacho... But othwise it maybe better not to mod, as mods then make it pretty hard to work out what the tao tao is really like as it sort of is no longer a stock out of the box product and ads a lot of extra variables... Great to see keeping track of what it would cost a non mechanical owner who just wanted cheap basic transportation and had to pay a shop for most / all service, maintenance and repairs

That labor cost is why I could NEVER work in a shop. I couldn't justify charging such a ridiculous rate for something that anyone could learn how to do with a day of youtube videos.

Hey..... 3000 km break in. Uh my. Most of my scooters says 500 km break in... I had a baotian 50cc, thats det same motor..... That only went 3000 km befor the motor eat it self, total engien breakdown. An i kept service, an break in was done by the book. Be Nice to it.. Very

Only place in engine "break in" is piston and cylinter. It takes about 50 km. Best way to doing it is normal variable driving. Ball bearings not need any special. Bigger main jet is good for lowering heat.

That looks like a scooter to avoid overall for the average buyer. Thanks for showing all it short coming and repairs

I would agree, the average scooter buyer should probably place this in their 'do not consider' list. however there is a market for these things; and it's not uncommon to see dealerships that only sell these Chinese knockoff variant scooters, and make their living off of the scooter sales of these alone.

@@ultraflightamerica9019 There is a market, especially in areas where cheap used scooters, motorbikes, or cars just aren't that common. You do have to know what you're getting into, but if your handy, 750-800 bucks can get you a vehicle that isn't sold by a country loan-shark like JD Byrider. If that gets you a job and an income, it's worth it.

with the Federal minimum wage going up, and some states being close to or above $10 an hour, shops are having to charge more and more to keep up with the maintenance of their equipment, as well as their utility bills. I live in one of the poorest areas of the greater 48, the cheapest automotive shop's labor rate here is $86 an hour. the cheapest motorcycle shop's labor rate is $95 an hour. Small engine repair shops in this area mostly work on commercial lawn equipment, and they charge between $100 to $130 an hour

110$/h for a motorcycle mechanic? Surgeon tarif? 12x minimum wage?

Unfortunately that's what it costs to get your motorcycle serviced here in the US. I'll assure you the technician only gets a small fraction of that. A large portion of it goes to very expensive garage insurance shops are required to have here.

@@Scooter_911 That's about what it costs here in Switzerland -and Switzerland is by far the most expensive country in the world! So it surprised me a lot! In neighbouring France for example, prices are much lower, for example. And back in the day, I remember the prices is the US being much cheaper than in Switzerland! Well, the scooter itself is quite cheap, being "Made in PRC".

I don't have any problems with my tao tao

I applaud you on the detail that you are taking in the maintenance -- I love the spreadsheets, but you named this series "Living with a Tau Tau" and you have yet to show any video of you actually riding it. Without any frame of reference for your riding style, how can any of those following compare your experience to theirs? I can't believe that you didn't do a live first ride to document the experience and initial impressions of the various systems that you are tracking the performance of in this series. If all you are going to do is present dry data over and over again without any examples of you "Living with a Tao Tao" in the real world, I think that the experiment falls short of the mark. Having video evidence of a shortfall or breakdown could also help the viewer diagnose problems that they have experienced first hand -- after all, most of us watching haven't worked in the industry as you have, and we could benefit from your experience in a breakdown scenario. By all means, keep up the great work, but please consider the points that I bring up as i really think that it would take this to another level -- Can you handle a breakdown with the stock tool kit or should you upgrade it? (Gorilla tape, zip ties, misc. nut & bolt bag, spare plugs, etc.)

That is an excellent point and be assured I have plans to do some "ride with me" monolog style videos. I'm just currently working out the technical bugs of recording audio and video while on the scoot that can make a high quality video. I plan on doing some videos of the everyday cary as far as tools go, but I've just got to get these videos out ahead of time. Thanks for the suggestions!
