You absolutely need to sit down and watch the whole special, not even for the channel, but the experience. Bo locked himself in that one room from the beginning of this project until it was finished, and I cannot overstate how profound and powerful the final product is, on every level, from music, to mood, to meaning. Well not really. If you look at the end of the make happy special outside of that room is his house. I suppose him being "locked" in that room was more of a metaphor for being stuck at home, but he doesn't actually live in that room, and he does live with his girlfriend. It's just his studio that he added a bed to lol Doesn't take away from how amazing and moving this special was though.

This song hits so hard when you watch the special. The special starts out like typical Bo comedy, and you can just slowly see him become more unhinged as the special progresses. Then this one comes up at the end, and you're left feeling equally as empty. It's a wild ride, and Bo is a virtuoso for being able to display the jaded cynical dissociation that so many people are feeling today.

To me the part where he says "it's almost over, it's just begun" and "Don't be scared, don't be shy, come on in the water's fine" resprisents how shitty it feels when you make a lot of progress on your mental health and then regress for a few days then tou think 'here we go again' and then how it's so easy to just give into past thought cycles and bad habits.

I just commented something similar. I suffer from severe anxiety,panic attacks and depression. And BO has states he suffers from the same things. So this song imo is about anxiety and panic attacks.

I think it is about the comedian / audience relationship, he is inviting you to his world, that you enter without overthinking that the water is fine...Bo already sang this song in his previous one-man show, but in Inside he reinforced its meaning

"All Eyes On Me" is from his special "Inside", which he performed, filmed, edited and produced by himself inside his home completely isolated during covid. Musical comedy is Bo's strong suit and there are many great songs in "Inside", but the thing that intruiged me the most was, you can see him living through different mental states throughout the 90 minutes and in between songs. Right before this song he sat in front of the camera trying to say, "So, I've been working on this special for a year now, which is a lot longer than I anticipated, when I started..." He couldn't build that sentence and had to abort his attempts infuriated. That scene alone broke my heart and gave me shivers down my spine, because it felt real. Bo Burnham has a deep impact on me. By the way, "Welcome to the Internet" is from that same special and shows the emotional range. I hope to see more Bo soon.

"That Funny Feeling" wrecks me EVERY TIME 😭

The fact that he locked himself in his own house to work on this special is absolutely a monument to the mental strength he has. He took a break for 5 years because of panic attacks, and after finally being ready to get back into the mix and not hide from the world, the world stops. Covid hits. And he is forced right back into isolation again. I can’t even imagine how hard that must’ve been

I'd love to see a reaction "Can't Handle This" aswell, as the one on KZread is his very last performance specifically as he's talking about in this song. Honestly, after learning how Bo Burnham has struggled so much with Anxiety and stuff even while on stage, it made me look at his Netflix special "Inside" with even more pain, love and everything. It's an hour and a half with different songs, but I'd LOVE to see your reaction from start to end on Inside especially. After learning so much about Bo, I hold him up with the legends. He's an amazing artist, and his songs hits hard, wether it be a comedic song, it always breaks down into some very real stuff, and there's always so many thoughts to be juggling behind each of his song.

it’s not like he his in his house - he IS in his house. This was from his 2021 special called Inside which was recorded throughout 2020. For context, Bo Burnham was a KZread star (early youtube) turned to a standup comedian. He made 2 popular standup specials, what. and Make Happy, but he stopped performing in 2016 because of severe anxiety and panic attacks - which he mentions in this song. INSIDE is basically about a man who spends 5 years bettering himself mentally, and he finally feels confident enough to go back outside and start performing again, and in a tragically ironic twist of fate, the pandemic happens which forced him (and the rest of us) back inside. Right back to square one. INSIDE is touching, depressing, hilarious, cute, raw, and downright beautiful. You owe yourself the experience of watching it. Plus, when you’re finished, Bo just released over an hour of extra footage, songs, and outtakes from INSIDE. I hope you’re well. Keep it up, this was a great reaction.

Great synopsis. It's such an odd choice as the first Bo Burnham song.

This song is kinda a sequel to the last song he did before his hiatus called "Cant handle this". You can kinda tell his breaking up a bit and by the end of the song he gets really deep about how bad he feels and the last words he says are "I hope you're happy." It's something you should watch if you want to understand his journey a little better.

Bo won a Grammy for this and it was well deserved. This is amazing & I hope everyday hes living happier and happier. Keep on keepin on BO!

I absolutely love how he crafted the "stages" of this song, more then anything else. He starts with the sound of a crowd and then starts speaking as if it's at them, "all eyes on me" and "put your hands up" and all those lines that gives the listener the idea that he's addressing the "crowd," whether you realize they're real or not lol You then get a hint of something being more off when we switches from "get your hands up" to "heads down, praying for me." Right after that first switch up he then gives you his very real story, of his struggles, and explains where he's been for so long, only to finish it off with the realization that he was forced back INSIDE once again. He then repeats those same lines that were originally made to look like they were directed at the crowd, but this time with the story you just heard it re-frames everything, now realizing that it's to him, it's his anxiety and panic, he's basically describing what they feel like. Then ofc going into describing further the feelings created from his depression and mental state. Finally leading into him grabbing the camera just to break the illusion for good at the end, with it no longer looking like a "music video" but just a guy with a camcorder in his room during the pandemic. It's a fucking journey through his entire psyche and just goes to show how much of a lyrical and musical genius that man is. This song is a masterclass on every facet of production lol

I often wonder how he feels about being called a genius in so many aspects of his profession. It makes me sad to think that it's probably overwhelming. Being so good at something feels like you're working double time to avoid disappointing people. I hope he realizes that the community that follows him could neve the disappointed in him. But depression is a bitch and reality doesn't matter to a diseased brain.

Wow. I’ve listened to this song over 100 times and you just now made me make the connection of the “you say the oceans rising like I give a shit” part. I always heard it as him saying it’s too late to change anything but I never considered the fact that it’s his anxiety that’s the problem for him caring about bigger issues. “Why would I care about climate change ending the world when I feel like I’m dying every day because of my mental health.” So interesting

This entire special helped me a lot with understanding my mental illnesses, and this song specifically resonated a lot with being sewer slidal for me. Like "you say the ocean's rising, like I give a shit, you say the whole world's ending, honey it already did" was so powerful. The entire special was so powerful. I really recommend people watch this

I feel this. I absolutely feel this. Same boat my dude. It was strange and emotional watching this special because it was like watching myself in my own breakdowns. And it made me not feel so alone. But at the same time, it was terrifying to realize this is what it looks like from the outside. It was so timely. Like I started streaming on twitch just to try and connect with people and raise money. A year later and we where still stuck inside, And I felt like a dancing monkey begging for pennies because i didn't get my covid benifits on time to pay rent. Then I quit because hitting the "go live" button gave me anxiety. Just sitting in my room, talking to myself, hoping some text will show up in the chat to prove im not crazy. Took a long break, and then came back. Then this special dropped, and I cried. Someone gets me. This song gives me chills everytime. And made me really recognize how many creatives where stuck inside, trying to make it work. "How about I sit on the couch and watch you next time" in the next song. LMAO.

Totally relate to the line you mentioned as well. 30 was another one that resonated with me a lot because I’m also about to turn 30. When he said “it’s 2020 and I’m 30, I’ll do another 10, 2030 I’ll be 40 and k*** myself then” I cried, because I have had that exact same thought. I have never said it out loud and hearing someone else say it made me feel so many things.

Nonono. You NEED to watch his INSIDE Movie. Sit down for an hour. Watch it. Like people said before, he did the entire thing in his bedroom. Itll answer all the questions you have.

This songs feels like a real mental breakdown to me, having been through it myself this hits me hard every single time.

Bo actually made this comedy special during the Covid lockdown. He recorded every song in one room using a variety of different lighting techniques that he did entirely by himself.

He did his Netflix special this way because of Covid. It’s a commentary on multiple things. I absolutely love his art. I’ve been watching him on KZread since he started.

If you have any interest in mental health, it’s a 100% must watch. My interpretation of this song is Bo’s internal monologue as he talks himself through one of his panic attacks

I had a somewhat similar experience to Bo. I have what I call "crippling anti-social tendencies". Had told myself in March 2019 "I'm gonna make a real effort to see my friends and go out and do things" As Bo said "Then the funniest thing happened"

I have such a connection with this song. It always makes me flash back to the first time I started going out to public places (church, gatherings,etc.) after working through the first wave of covid in the ICU. I was so apprehensive, shaking, had palpitations because I felt I didn’t know how to be normal after all the things I saw/did. And then as soon as I felt it was getting better, I had to work through the second wave and right back into isolation. I’ve gotten better, but it was such a difficult time.

Watch the special. It's genuinely painful, but life changing. I sobbed through half of it as a person experiencing anxiety, depression, BPD, and Autism. It held a mirror up to my soul.

I actually had something very similar happen to me. For five years I lived with pretty severe agoraphobia. I basically designed a kind of exposure therapy for myself that my friends helped me work through and was able to get well enough to go back to school. I studied to become a medical assistant. My externship at a lab was going to be my first real big test for myself to see if I had actually gotten over it... and my first day was a week after the outbreak. After all that time I finally came outside and literally everyone else on the planet went in.

This is the first video of yours I've seen and not only the commentary, but the kind words after, the supportive nature of your channel overall, and especially stressing the importance of getting real help if you need it, is outstanding. I was lucky enough to see Make Happy live in St. Louis in 2016. It was an absolutely phenomenal show, and I was blown away by his massive talent. Mental health struggles are SO misunderstood, especially by people who don't experience them, but his songs really hit home for me.

Until Intermission when he wipes the other side of the screen and remeinds you that there is a barrier. And he is in fact alone. Then, he pulls you right back into the room with this song.

I think the line that best captures the feel of being in lockdown is "Got it? Good. Now get inside."

This song is a masterpiece. The lyrics have multiple meanings and brings me to tears during different parts each time I hit replay. That’s what brought me to this video, and I heard yet another meaning in his words. He’s so anxious, thought he got over it, and though he thought it was over, it’s just begun. You can see how many meanings are in the songs when you look at the verse “you’re not gonna slow it” -he’s talking about slowing the spread. It’s just. This song. I can’t articulate my feelings. I send to friends and recommend them to listen to it alone, in a quiet place, with headphones, when they need to *feel* something. Thank you for the review and thank you Bo for this song. I will continue to pray for you.

I actually interpreted this song as a positive outlook on life. That worrying and focusing on the little things or what other people make you feel is not a good way of living. “Don’t be scared, don’t be shy, come on in the water’s fine.” And the parts of the world ending or having already ended is a healthy outlook too. Memento Mori, we will all die, maybe tomorrow or maybe in 70 years, but we will and one has to enjoy and live life to the fullest today.

Being that I also suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I think this song is Cleary about anxiety and panic attacks. You tell yourself in your head that it's almost over but then you have the thought it's just started. Then the whole just do it with the water being fine. Then we get the go where every body knows everybody. And for people like us who suffer from the same type of anxiety and panic attacks? Thinks just like that. I would question who's going to be there when people would ask me to come to a dinner etc. And it helps when everyone that's going os someone you already know.

He is alone doing the performance from his room. The laughs are added by him to highlight how throughout his career he has said over and over again how miserable he is and we all took it as just jokes so now that theres no joking and it is blatantly obvious he is bearing his soul he adds the laugh tracks to show how the crouds laughter has made him feel this whole time. If you watch his entire artwork it shows a very happy carefree kid making videos in his room turn into a celebrity and get used so much that he turned cynical. His 3rd special is just about how he's a corporate puppet being jerked around for money. Bo is crazy self aware and if you've been a long time fan it's really nice to see him finally becoming happier. After "Make Happy" I really thought we would lose him.

Hey Tom! I actually recommended this one a little while ago so awesome to see you react to it! If you want to continue down the bo train, a good one for a mental health analysis is "cant handle this" which was actually what he performed just before taking his 5 year hiatus. Keep it up!

Bo is pretty amazing. If you want to understand him a little better, I'd suggest "Art is Dead", "Can't Handle This", and "Left Brain, Right Brain".

The ended song in "Make Happy" is a great one. And of course the Kanye rant.

Cant Handle This is the song he was having his panic attacks during, it's definitely worth watching, even if on your own time. And when you're finished reacting to him, I would definitely reccommend watching Make Happy and Inside in their entirety on your own time just so you have the context of it all. Bo has so many songs/comedy bits that focus on mental health. I've been watching Bo since his early years, and speaking as someone with severe anxiety/depression, he's such an inspiration.

I remember seeing Make Happy live during his college campus tour and I left afterwards feeling his mental struggles for years. When this special came out, I knew Make Happy was just a peak. Watching the progression from special to special is worth analysis on its own.

The first time I watched INSIDE, not only did I find it incredibly poetic and reflective of the state of the world but I felt like it was a deep reflection of his mental state at that time. I freaking loved every song and thought two things, 1. He is SO talented, 2. Is he actually okay because I felt 99% was unsettling (and relatable) and I genuinely worried for his mental health. LOVE him.

When he yells to “get tf up”, it feels like he’s yelling at himself. Both from others and from my own personal experience, sometimes when you get stuck in this weird stuck place where something has to give but nothing is and nothing is and nothing is, the only way to break out is to actually scream at yourself like that. I can’t, but I use this song and a couple others to vicariously create that experience when I need it. It can also be really cathartic. Like snapping back into yourself.

"Well, I'm right back where I started 5 years ago" -- there's a line in his final song that basically says that EXACT thing. But you definitely need to listen to all of Inside to get it!

Yeah I wanted to pay a compliment on this as well - having watched a few videos, it’s given me a fresh perspective on separating the art from the artist. I will often think, “okay that’s not a crazy guess or anything but no just... hold on, listen to the whole thing and maybe then look up this or that if you’re not sure what that was about when they said that, at that point I’m very curious to hear your thoughts.” This time, on the other hand, when his insight as a therapist suggested Bo was probably struggling with circumstance sending him back to where he began, I wished I could share with him the moment when Bo is caught naked in the spotlight with the lyrics “well, well, look who’s inside again” coming at him in haunting mockery. It really is the precise moment of horrifying self-reflection the entire special has been building to, one I identify with more than I could explain but anyway you couldn’t come to a more apt conclusion as a professional analyst of mental health and it really delivers the promise of the channel. Genuinely impressive.

if you listen to this song with the approach that he’s singing as his depression/anxiety, it’s even darker

I love that hes openly expressing this underlying anger that performers have to their audience. Its like “dance monkey! I dont care if youre dying inside. Be my clown cause thats why you’re here.” Obviously theres much more to a man than his career. I suffer from anxiety and I cant imagine experiencing it on the level that he has. Bo didnt owe me anything but I hope he knows im grateful for his transparency, I dont think any song has resonated this way for me. All eyes on me.

The thing that hit me about this special was that the entire descent into madness due to isolation was exactly what I feel with a chronic disability and extensive cycle of homelessness effectively making me feel completely cut off from everyone else's experiences with life. It was the first time I've felt seen, and it was both ecstatic to feel and also terrifying. Like, it ended for everyone else with Covid restrictions but for people like me, the isolation (social segregation, if you will) never ends. And that is a pretty rough conclusion to have come to.

not at a concert. he added the crowd noise. he knows when we are going to laugh and cheer. hes smarter than us. and have watched people do it to many times

Bo is the personification of "the quiet part out loud"

Yeah he *absolutely* has the ability to suck you in and make you feel like you’re right there in the room! The first time I saw his “all eyes” video, it was like 2am, my house was dark and peaceful, I had my headphones on…and I legitimately “jumped” when he barks the order “GET UP” and quickly moved towards the camera. My poor little chihuahua nearly got catapulted across the room!🤣🤦‍♀️

Theres so many layers to this song i like watching people slowly discover that blind o.o its so ominous when you realize the laugh track is edited in and the whole time youre left feeling something youve never felt from music before. The entire Inside project is an absolute masterpiece 🙏

I absolutely love this song. Before I hear your breakdown, to me it symbolizes his anxiety and fears around performing. Beautiful song. Intense video with it.

You honestly should react to his whole special. its perfect for your channel. he is very very open and thoughtful about his emotions and things like the harm of social media, etc. Just there is an abundance of things that would fit your channel perfectly. Edit: WHile there are many songs of his not on this album worth listening to, I would suggest "Kanye Rant" (cant handle this). that concert is the last he did before he took his 5 year hiatus, and that song was the last song of the concert and he said he had a panic attack while on stage in that video. So if you watch the video of that song you are seeing him have a panic attack. I wouldnt normally point this out so specifically, but you are a therapist, and I think its useful context for you if you watch it.

You need to watch the whole special for your own pleasure. 6 Emmy noms and won 3 .... It's really good and you need to watch it front to back because of the progression of the time and the monologues between segments. He wrote the entire special in that one room over a year or more and directed EVERYTHING you see. Dude is a straight up genius. He has also directed a full-length movie called Eighth Grade which scored really good on Rotten Tomatoes. He was planning on being done by a certain time and missed his deadline, so he actually wrote a song all about it. GO WATCH THE SPECIAL :D

So i just came across this video and I have to say this is one of my go to video when I talk about mental health. I think it very greatly explains how people with mental health issues felt during covid. You saw all the celebrities talking from their Hollywood mansion saying how it was difficult times and we'd all get through this together. We all had it rough through covid but I think the people who struggle with depression and anxiety were kinda ignored and pushed to the side. Everyone was saying to stay home whether it was justified concern or social grandstanding and I think he's just shows the turmoil that can go through your head isolated and alone. He's a performer. His one job is to make sure everyone else in the room is having fun and enjoying themselves. Bo is also an atheist as displayed in his other specials. In the song he wants everyone to get up and have a good time but reality comes crashing back and out of desperation he tells everyone "hey I need you to stop having a good time for a minute and pray for me" but in the end he puts his own feelings aside and resumes the party to the point of demanding "get the fuck up". I think the most haunting part of the song is the short chuckle at the end. It's not a happy laugh. It reminds me of Joaquin Phoenix's joker. He's the life of the party and wants everyone to laugh with him and have a good time even when he's broken and hurting inside.

watching this music video in context within the special completely changes the entire vibe and mood of it, really drives it home because you understand the head space hes coming from right from the get go. this whole special is gutting, and devastating and beautiful.

"Can't handle this" is the last song from "show" before this. The panic attacks he describes in this song he also speaks about in it. In this song it feels like he isn't ashamed to talk about how he feels. In "Can't handle this" it seems like he wants to tell his audience how bad everything is but also wants to make sure they will laugh the whole time because he can't bear to have anyone feel bad during one of his performances. "Cant handle this" feels like what a lot of people with anxiety disorders will do in the first place. Allude to what is going on, while being as accommodating as possible (if you have time, if it's not too much bother) . "All eyes on me" feels like an honest statement of this is where I am deal with it.

In "Can't Handle This" Bo explains that he both fears and needs his audience. He is a performer at heart, so not being able to do it is taxing for his mentality (although same could be said for doing it). This song kind of reflects that, where his desire to perform manifests as a phantom audience.

It's from his Netflix special INSIDE filmed during lockdown all on his own. Its a rollercoaster of emotion and he won an Oscar for it! I highly recommend watching it from start to finish

bo burnham to me is an example of being the change you want to see in the world. I dont know a whole lot about him tbh but the first time I heard of him was when art is dead came out. And now, to see him doing all these amazing things with music, it certainty inspires many artists

New follower here, please please watch the full film! It's basically a documentary painted in his "comedy" explaining many many MANY rollercoasters he not only personally faces but is relatable to others as well. His struggle to make the documentary itself and admitting alot of personal flaws and failures in it's production is just...something I have never seen before and highly respect. Dare I say borderline life-changing.

This song gives me absolute CHILLS everytime that overlapped voice hits it’s just such a powerful beautiful and crazy song

The line "It's almost over, It's just begun" has so much context after his monologe. Its Haunting.

8:25 idk if youve already seen the full special but when you said that it made me think of one of the lines from the finale song-- "Am i right back where i started 14 years ago?"

Love the outside perspective. He even said “his insides out” which is the name of the special, “inside”.

"It's like he's in his house man" yeah Bo is awesome like that, he propped the whole stage to look like his home. crazy.

The singing is a metaphor for his anxiety and panic attacks.

Speaking of irony, you should listen to bo's ironic song as well!

He was able to put his anxious feelings into lyrics and project them to the listener.

The part where he said "In January of 2020" was where I lost it when I watched the special. I had locked myself in my room for years because of anxiety and depression. In January 2020 I made a list of 12 things.... one to do each month along with exercising and trying to get myself out in the dating world after moving to LA in 2018. I went to the Natural History Museum and started working out 5x a week. Then the funniest thing happened...

Can't Handle This should be your next Bo song cuz its the last song he did live before he quit and it's kind of a companion song to this one.

"That Funny Feeling" from the same special. It's so heartfelt and disturbing at the same time. Absolutely wrecks me.

I've never been so pained watching someone else watch this. This is like reading one random chapter in one of the best novels ever written, one that could be studied for years to come, and being like "I get it."

This whole song is the way his brain reacts from coming back and having more stage anxiety. The anger when people dont react and hes not sure if its a good joke or not.

When I heard this the first time I pictured the actual depiction of death holding his hand out to get you in the back seat of his car. This the beginning of the end. Overpowering calm
