@@Hdhdjdudh-fv5jk I respect anyone who believes in Jesus or God or any other deity (or deities), but for me, trying to wholeheartedly believe in any religion is like trying to believe in Santa Claus or Harry Potter. It's just so far detached from my experience of reality, and all attempts to believe in Jesus and find any form of mental support in religion in the past have resulted in just further hopelessness for me. A good example is when I was a child, I desperately prayed for my parents to not get a divorce, and then it happened anyways. As an adult, I know now that it was inevitable, but that didn't help me then. The idea that I could pray to a deity and somehow either prevent something bad or cause something good to happen was something that was really engrained in me, but that experience, along with several others, convinced me that trying to rely on a deity to solve my problems or help in tough situations is a great way to end up depressed with suicidal ideation. If any deity does exist, they evidently either have favorites or just don't pay attention to what someone prays to them about. I do want to say that's just my experience, and I don't think less of anyone who believes in any given religion or uses religion as a coping mechanism. It's just not for me at my stage in life, and offering it as a solution to serious mental health problems can feel like a slap in the face. I can't pray autism, anxiety, depression, or gender dysphoria away, I can't pray generational trauma away, and I can't pray for my parents to accept and love me unconditionally. Or, more accurately, I could pray for all of those things, only to be disappointed, betrayed, and heartbroken when nothing improves, and I've wasted time and effort trying to ask for favors from someone who may not even exist. I wish it was as simple as "stick by Jesus", though. That seems like a lot better of a world to live in.

In my opinion: The progression of the special itself was life ruining. How the world works was near the beginning, so I thought of it as a comedy song voicing what's happening in the world. But as it goes on, you see more of his struggles until it all comes together in Goodbye, which incorporated elements of all the other songs, to make an ending that was truly life ruining for me. I walked away having a mental breakdown that lasted weeks

The thing that really works with “Welcome to the Internet” is the constant contrast. “Here’s a tip for straining pasta, here’s a 9 year old who died.” It highlights just how easy it is to go from something totally inoffensive and practical to ‘hey, you want to be sad right now?’ And the way the verses speed up too, almost giving you no time to actually process what he just said before something else pops up.

“Derealization” is the phenomenon of viewing yourself almost from the outside, like a third party. It’s a common symptom of anxiety and panic disorder, which Bo is diagnosed with and what caused him to leave performing live at the end of the Make Happy tour. I think the feeling he’s describing is his anxiety as a whole and feeling helpless to improve during the pandemic. As a clinician and also someone who struggles with anxiety, he broke my heart with how beautifully he described it and I tear up every time. Life ruining 100%

“Look Who’s Inside Again” would absolutely be life ruining for me. It reminds of how many years I spent playing alone, in my room, because I didn’t have anyone to play with, and how I would make up friendships in my head. Hearing it for the first time was like looking at that little girl, all alone in her room, as a separate person and realizing how sad it was. Actively cried about it more than once. Still haunts me even months after the special came out.

The "I promise to never go outside again" when inside is meant to be his depression, and the callbacks to other songs with "all I ever wanted was a little bit of everything" and the end where he's suddenly naked and vulnerable in the spotlight while the disembodied voice repeats the "well, well, look who's inside again" ughh that literally ruined my life

In White Woman's Instagram there's this really cool thing he does with the ratio where most of song is in a square, like Instagram posts, but on the verse about the mom, the ratio widens out to fill the screen, like it's becoming more human/less fabricated. Just something I noticed He does it in FaceTime, too, makes the screen look like what you see on a phone. I thought it was a really clever use of the medium

  • @adricrowell7508

    @adricrowell7508

I noticed that, and I thought it was really interesting. Like this momentary widening of the screen seemed to point to a momentary realness, but then before the verse is even done, it's narrowing again, and to me, that meant that like entertainment and art and love and even racism and advocacy have been squeezed into little palatable internet squares, so has grief. That our selves and lives and feelings and passions are all packaged up for public consumption on the internet, and that made what on the surface felt like a fun little teasing song Life Ruining to me.

I think it's supposed to remind us that there is a real person behind the screen with real problems and feelings, so if she wants to post about latte foam art for the aesthetic - let her be. It's fun and it isn't hurting anybody. If he really wanted to make fun of the types of photos, he could have made his recreations look weird or funny but he didn't. At the same time, he is obviously not letting her get away with everything and points out white privilege by including lines like "her favorite quote from lord of the rings, incorrectly attributed to martin luther king" and "a dreamcatcher bought from urban outfitters"

@@user-es7ui5mc1m Yeah, I disagree a bit with the harmlessness point bc I think a large part of this persona of “the white woman” online is that we are harmless and innocent, and that this image of harmless allows us to get away with doing harm (if you look at a lot of the supposedly innocent images, the text on the t-shirt or the mug or a feather in the hair points to a casual racial ignorance that white women get away with), but I do think the song is meant to be humanizing as it is critical. That we fall into the same trap as everyone else, and sometimes more so, of our whole lives, grief included, needing to be polished and packaged for consumption on the internet. That while white women are harming others with our internet persona, we are also harmed by it as we become people of the internet instead of just people.

There is another theory going around about how well he actually made the photos out to be, women often get critized for anything they like ever by men. It doesn't matter if it's an app, a game, a store, they find something to mock us with. Yet, mocking women is the only time they can actually be feminine without being shamed. I don't think this was the main focus of the song, but I did think it was an interesting perspective.

“Welcome to the internet” made me uncomfortable of how accurate is was. As a gen z, I can definitely say the amount of media we consume is so much all the time. After that song finished It definitely was life ruining. I came to realize how desensitized to big events I was, I’ll go from admiring art to watching a video of someone being killed and not bat an eye. It’s terrifying how ours brains can just do that- I think Bo captures that feeling of choking on the sheer amount of media we consume perfectly. The fact that we can’t even escape it, that it’s already cemented itself to our society and daily life’s was earth shattering. Basically- that song is both a bop and life ruining. I’d put it in it’s own tier of “life ruining bop” lol. But that’s just my opinion on it 🤷‍♀️

I feel like "Goodbye" was much higher on the list for me. He basically takes all the emotional bits from each song and puts them all together. "Im slowly losing power, has it only been an hour?" My social anxiety relates to this. "I wanna hear you tell a joke when no ones laughing in the background" The feeling of judgment finally making you snap. That feeling of "well if you think its so easy, lets see *you* do it!" "Am i going crazy? Would i even know? Am I right back where i started 14 years ago" The worry of backsliding, all that progress on his mental health wasted. "Im finished playing and im staying inside." When the world gets to be too much and you just dont wanna go out into it again. "If i wake up in a house thats full of smoke I'll panic, so call me up and tell me a joke" The way this line changes from the original. First time around its saying "im here for you" second time around its saying "i need someone to be be here for *me* im not doing well" "Well well look whos inside again, went out to find a new reason to hide again." This line feels so much more judgemental to me the second time round. Maybe because it only comes *after* all the lines that show hes not doing well. Edit: also "That Funny Feeling" was top of the list for me as well. The lines "full agoraphobic, losing focus, cover blown" and "the quiet comprehending of the ending of it all" both had me tearing up.

“Welcome to the Internet” “Funny Feeling” and “30” were life ruining for me. Having a 13 year old daughter I see how much of her life is consumed by media, and it saddens me. Funny feeling just lays it all out about how the world is ending but we gladly ignore it. 30 for me is personal, I had a lot of depression that caused me to dread turning 30, including 2020 being a terrible year.

OK I've noticed alot of people not seeing the GENIUS that is white women's Instagram, in the special/video of the song there is a sequence where he is next to a wall with 27 written on it, a few seconds later he drops the line about how this person has lost her mum a decade ago, in a single line he makes a quirky song making light fun of people into a full blown heartbreaking story about how a young girl loses her mum and how she grew up and managed to survive the world. LIKE HOLY FUCK HE'S A GENIUS

Maybe even more so actually.

@@northpaal6125 Based on the lyrics it strongly implies that the Mum has passed (possibly the Mum and Dad). Specifically the ‘since you’ve been gone’. ‘Her favorite photo of her mom The caption says, "I can't believe it It's been a decade since you've been gone Mama, I miss you, I miss sitting with you in the front yard Still figuring out how to keep living without ya It's got a little better but it's still hard’ Additionally as other people have mentioned during this part of the song the aspect ratio of the shot expands from a 4:3 shot to widescreen to represent something genuinely revealing being shared. I understand that you could read the ‘give a hug and kiss to Dad’ line as something that’s in the present tense but it’s also common for people who have suffered a bereavement to talk to people who’ve passed in the present tense as using a different tense or phrasing changes it from being conversational to something more like a monologue highlighting (to the speaker) that the person isn’t there.

He didn't do those things because they were fun, it's almost like an example of his mental state. The scene in the show right beforehand shows him barely holding on, trying to get through a small scripted monologue but he just genuinely can't do it. He gets frustrated and knocks over his gear in a really rough way. That anger resonated with me so deeply because I understand that it wasn't that anything was wrong with the scenario around him. You know what's really sad? Im so desensitized to shit I heard welcome to the interned and wasn't even fazed, like "yup, I have a disfunctional and unhealthy relationship with the internet, what of it?"

Goodbye for me is literally always going to be on life ruining. It feels so vulnerable. Everything is coming to an end and you have absolutely nowhere to go. So you’re stripped bare like Bo is you’ve recapped every song and then comes the other life ruining song look who’s inside again but pitched down and slightly eerie and it just makes me want to fall down lifeless and look at a ceiling for at least 10 minutes. Followed by it’ll stop anyday now and you’ve got what my depression feels like 😂

2:57 The way your index finger drops along with the "Insiiiiide" shows just how hard that part hits 😁

Goodbye and Welcome to the Internet killed me. In goodbye when it says “Am I going crazy would I even know” got me like it is so true. Ugh I’m dead now.

My favorite part about Any Day Now is that it repeats. Forever. There’s no variation. At all.
