    Woah, you listed all the symptoms I've been feeling daily - chest pain, nausea, hot flashes, etc. I had no idea all these were anxiety. When I was younger, I had depression. But that has progressed to anxiety, due to repressed anger from the feeling of helplessness after multiple traumatic situations stacking throughout my life.

    Im here because ive learned my anxiety has gotten so bad its causing cronic health issues and i needed this video to show to a family member who doesnt understand it and what it is so they can help me get better rather than telling me to "get over it" wish me luck

    Hey Karl, thanks for watching! You are correct. Originally, I had a lot more content, including stuff about self-medication with substances. However, it became really long and shifted the focus. So I cut it and put it in it's own script all about self-medication. It's such an important topic and highly comorbid with many mental health disorders, so it will be its own video!     Neuro Transmissions Kati Morton hello I have a question I'm a 16 year old and I was wondering when people look at me I close my eyes and make them people horney with my lips but I can't control it and I also can't control the way I look at people and I can't control my emotions like sometimes my friends say I look mad sad or even dangerous lookin I was wondering why do I make people horny and why can't I control my emotions and the way I look at people like sometimes I can't even control th things I say and I say things that were in my head and they know what I'm saying without me saying just by me thinking it pls respond back but I use to look at people ugly but now I look at people horny and its driving me nuts because I can't control my vision and now people take advantage over me pls text back

    I am definitely suffering from excessive stress from work, and this seriously exacerbates my worries about the future to a level that could be called anxiety, especially because no matter how much I work I simply can't rake in enough money to not make more debt every month

    @@neurotransmissions luckily I live in Europe where I don't have to pay for a therapist out of my own wallet. So that might be an option. But the only thing I really can do about the financial situation itself is to get a better paying job and practice more discipline in spending...

    lol. psychology 101. it's totally the wrong green for relaxing, it's too bright, you want a dull green for that, like they paint hospitals. jesus, no wonder people are having mental health issues when they are relaxing by looking at jazzy colours.

    A number of close of friends of mine have clinical anxiety (grad school has a habit of cranking up people's preexisting anxiety or uncovering their predilections to be anxious) and one of my friends undergoes CBT and swears by it. It honestly frustrates me the stigma surrounding these and other mental conditions. Thank you for the really informative/supportive video

    Yeah, there's actually some research that points to higher rates of anxiety disorders in grad students. So interesting. The stigma is frustrating because it's just another hurdle. People may already be hesitant, but an off-hand comment from a friend or family member could be the thing that keeps someone from getting care. In any case, thanks for watching!     Hey guys, I've been resisting resorting to medication to treat my anxiety for a long time. I'm afraid I will get too comfortable with them and become dependent, not able to function without them. Any thoughts? I'm looking for a long term sustainable solution and not to "sweep the dust under the rug". Really appreciate the help

    My anxiety is about P.E. class. Its weird, but i get anxiety whenever i have it. I dont know why, and I’ve been trying to figure it out for months. I think anxiety is a big word, but I’ve been so scared and anxious of doing something wrong or embarrassing myself that I’ve pretended to be sick multiple times to get out of it. My mom or friends dont know. I’ve been trying to figure out if i have some kind of anxiety disorder. I feel like therapy would help but i dont want anyone to know about this.

    can you please explain a traumatic event would lead to increased chance of anxiety. In my own personal experience that is the opposite way around. but anxiety is wide ranging and I'm mainly talking about social anxiety but idk what do you think?

    Remember that anxiety disorders include PTSD, which has traumatic in its name. Essentially, you can think of life events as "stressors". The more stressors, the higher likelihood of developing mental health problems. Each stressor has different severity and longevity. Trauma is very high on the severity scale, so it's no surprise that it is often a precursor to developing an anxiety disorder. There are links between PTSD and social anxiety disorder, as well as early trauma resulting in social anxiety disorder. I can recommend some reading material if you message me directly.     I get symptoms of anxiety when I know I have to speak in public (in class, to a large group or oral presentations) I frequently force myself to speak in front of people and over time it seems to only make my anxiety worse. Any tips?

    Thanks a lot! I understand, that the Disorder is not too well understood and a lot of the Issues form to a big part because of the symptomatic disorders, that go hand in hand with DID... It is rather hard to grasp and even harder to explain, which is why I think some work towardss public understanding would be amazing! Thanks for your answer!

    I think there's a stigma because everyone experiences anxiety at some point in their lives, but not everyone experiences an anxiety disorder. Others might think, "I was able to overcome my anxiety, and so should you. What's wrong with you?" So I think a lot of it is borne out of the fact that others can't empathize or understand that person's experience.

    There might be a misleading argument, pls give feedback. I couldnt find the reference for the statement "a combination treatment of medication and therapy is most effective". The Swedish national guidelines mentions no combination treatments (I understand the NCBI/NIMH might reason differently). I believe the reasoning in Sweden is the combination treatment offers no additional effect compared to solo treatment. The side-effects of medication will also lower the risk/benefit ratio. Regards

    As a scientist who has looked at meta-analyses for a few years (still a grad student), I can confirm that this point is controversial. There are consensuses in science, when evidence and studies converge and agree, and then there are complexities that haven't yet been explained by our scientific findings (at least on a level of consensus). For this claim that combination treatment of medication and therapy is most effective, the evidence is mixed. You can find reports where recommendations differ (such as you have referenced) because research aimed at replicating or confirming this one claim find opposite outcomes. The reason I introduced the word consensus is due to the nature of how the human brain likes simplicity. Concepts that can be simplified enough for people to wrap their minds around, tend to get circulated as these people (including scientists, and the general population) repeat And continue to simplify these concepts. Conceptually, it is a lot easier to propagate knowledge when the explanation doesn't dribble off into "it's complicated." So you may find mixed information, or less information on something that has controversial scientific findings around it. In the end, all of us are different - and science is not yet able to afford to understand All Of Us; rather, science tends to start with populations - like those with anxiety - before moving forward onto individuals and what makes us different from other folks with anxiety. The dichotomy in who benefits from available treatments (positive findings, which tend to get published, while negative findings tend not to get published nearly as often) versus those who don't - is still not well understood. What we know so far is that small subsets of people within the umbrella anxiety can either benefit best from single therapy (psychotherapy or drug), or combination, or even neither of these. The strongest finding out of these is agreed to be combination treatment - though the percent of people that this works for is still uncertain. This is where you can see widely different numbers on what percent of people benefit from these treatments, as in the end it is not a simple matter! Look for what works for you - even beyond the options of medication and therapy, as we are all different - and scientific knowledge and treatment options are ever evolving.

    I almost wish I lived in the fifties from what I understand people hung together in groups and questioned the world without being thought of as crazy. I think pre 80s the world was a better place for open dialogue across cultures and economic classes etc. I find the way the world is now too many interesting people are silenced by modern psychology so we have more of a mindless worker rat public that consumes is subservient and doesn't think.

    I'm not sure where you heard that, but open dialogue & freethinkers were always shunned/outcasted throughout history. E.g. People fighting racism or women not allowed education. There were groups then & there are groups now that can exchange ideas with eachother. Barely now, though, thanks to KZread connecting different cultures & perspectives, are people becoming more empathic & understanding

    Anxiety and excitement are very similar in how they are expressed. You might have an increased heartbeat or feel restless. Both emotions trigger arousal in the body. The difference between the two is how they are perceived. Obviously, we associate excitement as a positive emotion and anxiety as a negative one. Additionally, anxiety would result in very different behavior in a situation when compared to excitement, but the difference is not so clear-cut. There is ongoing research into how they may differ in the brain. Some work in therapy actually focuses on "reframing" anxiety. Essentially, taking that negative and turning it into a positive. So, in a way, you could take anxiety and turn it into excitement with enough work! Thanks for the great question!

    I suggest you try meditation or simply relaxing music. It's a simple way to reduce stress and anxiety. Meditation provides a soothing of the mind and helps to connect with oneself. Obviously, this does not prevent being followed by a health professional. However, I believe it's a good way to take care of yourself and make you feel better. I sincerely hope that you will find your means to fight your anxiety.
