Psychiatry resident in Switzerland: Meet Richard

Richard and I go way back before our Switzerland days. We studied Medicine together in University and we were even in the same group.
It is a pleasure talking to him every time we meet and I am thankful to him for agreeing doing it in front of a camera.
Having him teeling his experience in the french side of Switzerland and from such a different specialty from mine as Psychiatry is a breath of fresh air for the channel.
Sadly the microphone you see on camera didnt have the same opinion of this converstion and decided it wouldnt record on this day. As a result you are forced to listen to the built-in microphone from the camera which catches a lot of noise... so sorry about that. If you can put up with the noise I am sure you will find a lot of value in this video.
If you do indeed find Richard great and would like to ask him something or would like him to come back for another talk (This time with the audio fixed) please let me know in the comments.

Thank you so much for this very informative video, I really loved the perspective we got from Richard! I am interested in starting my residency in psychiatry in Germany or Switzerland so if that would be possible, I would love to hear more how can you get/finish your residency in psychiatry. Is it possible to do your 6 years as an outpatient doctor, or do you need to spend some time/years as an inpatient - and if so what's the ratio? Salary is another important part of the equation. How much does it vary in the beginning, as an inpatient and outpatient (since you don't have do to nights) etc. Lastly, I would like to say that I have been watching your youtube channel for quite some time now and I truly appreciate your videos and sharing your journey and knowledge with us! Have a great day!

No friends in Germany either. It's really difficult to have a social life with the natives

    1. Are interhips being paid and how much? 2. Richard was fluent in French but still didn’t manage to get a position in any French part as a surgeon? Is it so hard to be in the French part and begin your residency Even in the rural areas? 3. How can someone learn swiss German(having B2 or C1 already in German) without living there? Or is it necessary? How can someone afford living there and learn the language? 4. You are amazing thanks for this video, it’s so much helpful, I wish you the best!

    1. Depends on the institution. Somewhere between 700 and 1000 CHF. 2. Richard didn't try surgery because he was fed up with it in the end :) 3. You learn swiss German on the go, you are not required to speak it as you come to the country.

Hello, Doc! Ty for this video:)Please tell me which is the best and most possible of these two options: admission with a diploma from a country that is not part of the EU at all or a diploma from Germany? Will there be any difference at all if I definitely don’t have EU citizenship? There was also a question, can I Is it possible to start a residency in Germany and continue it in Switzerland? And the last point - my ultimate goal is neurosurgery, is it realistic for a foreigner to get a job in this specialty in Switzerland or is it like in the USA - on the verge of the impossible? What is the chance of applying with German citizenship, a German residency in neurosurgery and a German diploma? Thank you!

Hi- quick question what is the difference between an Oberärztin mbF and Oberärztin only? Is it important to become a Oberärztin mbF? Do these doctors make more money?

Oberarzt mbF are superior OA. I Do assume they win more money but that doesn't mean you have to become one :)

@@EutopianDoctor @EutopianDoctor , thank you for your reply. I do enjoy your videos on youtube. Really well put together with great content too. Do you know the benefits of becoming one? I am trying to understand the benefits. As you said maybe it is not worthy becoming one. It looks like that's the pathway to become a Leitender. What are your views on this? Also, does it make more sense to become a mbF if working part-time in the hospital? Many thanks and keep up being an inspiration to all of us
