How to work in Switzerland as a foreign medical doctor

There is something I would like to add regarding the "registration of non recognizable medical diplomas: I am at the moment working with resident colleagues who recognized their medical diplomas and have been working in several different cantons for years without a single problem, while studying in preparation for the federal exam. Dont feel discouraged about the idea of not being accepted, remember that you can work for some years until you are ready to take on the federal exam!

Here are all the promised links:
I. Diploma recognition:
Federal law (Medical Professions Act, MedBG) conclusively regulates the conditions under which a foreign diploma can be formally recognized in Switzerland;
- If you have completed your diploma in an EU/EFTA state and are a citizen of an EU/EFTA state in accordance with the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons (or are married to an EU/EFTA citizen), you can find the information and the application form for direct diploma recognition at the following link: www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home/...)
- If your diploma was obtained outside the EU/EFTA but has already been formally recognised in an EU/EFTA state (and the other requirements are also met), you will find the link for indirect diploma recognition below: www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home/...
Please note that all three requirements must be fulfilled cumulatively at the time of application submission and must be proven accordingly.
II. Registration of non-recognisable diplomas:
If neither the requirements for direct nor for indirect diploma recognition are met (see country of issue of the diploma and nationality), you have the option of registering your diploma with us. All information about the registration of non-recognisable diplomas can be found at: www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home/....
III. Obtain the federal diploma:
If a diploma’s recognition is not possible, you can obtain the Federal Diploma (see: www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home/...)
For the form of demand see: www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home/...
Information to the federal exam you can find under: www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home/...

We really appreciate it =) i've been interested in Switzerland for a while and since i don't fit in the first 2 categories i'll have to follow the last option..so i was wondering wether they'd accept a specialist who completed the training in their home country or do they need some sort of evaluation/more training ? Im an EU - non-eu diploma holder, currently learning German to start my specialization in germany. medium term plan would be to move to Switzerland. Is there any other way of entering Switzerland, perhaps through some research, masters that then allows me to go into certain specializations? Would love to chat sometime.

Hello there :D Switzerland is very competitive depending on the specialty, and anything you do to become a more attractive doctor in your employer´s eyes will be welcomed. It wont, however guarantee anything. So Answering your question, I dont think that a masters or research can guarantee a position as a resident.

I haven’t applied for the residency (Weiterbildung) yet because I’m currently improving my language skills. My question is that for doctors it’s a necessary to work as Assistenzarzt first and after training we should give the federal exam? How can I good prepare for the exam I mean the book which I’ll read should also be in German? Thanks

Hi there, thanks for your comment I don't think that working as Assistenzarzt is a requirement to do the exam, although most people that do the exam are already Assistenzärzte. Honestly I believe that the everyday experience from working will provide you already with a lot of the knowledge needed for the exam.

thank you for this update im glad you seem much more relaxed in this video! I found the cantons that accepted people were: - geneva and bern (they were the most accepting) - then some other smaller cantons also did - Zurich wasnt accepting probably because of higher dr supply Although its worth mentioning i've yet to hear a success story of someone with non-eu ties making it in switzerland because: 1. mebeko will not recognize your diploma (which hospital wants to hire sm like that) 2. hospitals will not take the risky move of making a visum for a non-eu dr. The swiss have stringent (ie. impossible) non-eu immigration laws. how do you find it in ch? i look forward to your next video!

I am a non-Eu citizen from Canada with a EU medical diploma (recently finished my medical studies in Romania). I am curently in France studying French and I wish to work in Switzerland. From my knowledge in order for me to work in Switzerland with my diploma I must get a Apostile de Haga stamp. The experience worked in germany can be recognized in Switzerland. When it comes to "where" you can work, you can work anywhere, just keep in mind that in order to become a specialist in Switzerland you need to spend some time in an A hospital. Normally as you transition from germany to Switzerland you go first o a C or B hospital because it´s easier and as you get used to the new country eventually you apply to an A in order to finish the specialty

How long does this process usually take? 2. After getting my diplom registered, I can work in private sector right? So how easy is it to get a job in the private clinics? And is the salary good? 3.
