[PSO: Blue Burst] Beginner's Guide to Phantasy Star Online

Ойындар

In this extended video, I wanted to take a look back at the original Phantasy Star Online and make a beginner's guide for anyone who never got chance to experience the game. With PSOGC celebrating its 20th anniversary (which is also my 20th anniversary with the series), I thought I would show newer entrants to the series how to access the game in 2023 and a complete run down of all the basics.

    Thanks for all the support on this video! Just a few updates / errors I want to cover: - HUmar isn't much of a beginner class, and is actually one of the harder Hunters to use later on! - On Ephinea now, if someone makes a party for you and then leaves, the game will revert to your ID. So if you want to play on another ID, the game maker needs to stay. - Level requirement for Ultimate on Ephinea is 80 across the board. 90/100/110 was on Sega servers.

    Hi! I'm making a new force char, but I can't figure out how the TP regeneration mechanic works. Do I need any of the TP regen items for it first? or should it be native to the character as a passive skill? Because my force chars (albeit new chars) won't recover TP yet.

  • @SectionSkyly

    @SectionSkyly

    8 ай бұрын

    TP regen is only native to FOnewm and FOnewearl (the newman forces). FOmar and FOmarl don't regen TP at all. At lower levels the TP regen for newmans is very slow too. Generally it's not something you'll rely on, it's just a nice bonus to have. There are items that regen TP (usually units, but certain rare frames do it too). TP regen also only works while you're standing still.

    I played base PSO2 for like half a year or so with some online friends when it came to Steam and stopped playing a while after NGS released, bloating the game size forcing me to download a game I couldn't care less for (and in my disgustingly honest opinion, have worse aesthetics aside from the character faces). And so I started looking for alternatives such as playing the Portable games on PPSSPP, but then I found out about this and it's seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Didn't think it was possible to feel nostalgic for a game I played just a few years ago, but it feels really nice recognizing the same old familiar sound effects that I used to hear all the time in PSO2 as I was watching your video. Will definitely give this a try.

    In the original Dreamcast version I suppose it wasn't as bad having a poorly matched Section ID. There were only the four Ep. I stages, very hard difficulty cap and level 100 cap. The "end game" was much easier than ver.2. Still, if one only played offline it would have sucked being a Pinkal hunter.

    Thanks for watching! ☺️ BB is very similar to GameCube/Xbox, and I'm fairly confident that the ep1&2 gear is the same stats. Blue burst is basically v3 with an extra episode, new gear etc. It does have some quality of life changes too, such as the palette you can bind to your keyboard number keys. Not sure about boss HP but as someone who played a ton of Gamecube PSO, BB feels very similar. Dropcharts are very similar to v3 as well, there's just a few changes to accommodate the new items.

  • @HiSodiumContent

    Yeah, it is a bit clunky and unrefined, but the reason I came back to it is I had an itch for a game where I can progress steadily, the gameplay loop is fun/interesting (to me), I can play online and I can put as little or as much time in as I want and still have a satisfying experience. If I had known there were PSO private servers I probably wouldn't have put so much time into PSO2 and NGS! Not that I regret the time in those games, I absolutely love the hunter gameplay in PSO2, endgame fights are a blast with the right gear. However, the original is beautiful in its simplicity and the progression feels great.

  • @SectionSkyly

    I recently heard about this for Steam Deck and made my nostalgia flare up. One thing tho, and you kinda addressed it, but HOW does one actually put items/spells on the number bar? I have been trying to see someone explain it on a PC so I can use whatever keys correlate to it for use on Steam Deck, but haven't seen anyone explain it.

  • @SectionSkyly

    @SectionSkyly

    Don't worry, the game doesn't explain how to do it! If you open your main menu and go to Customise, select any slot and it'll show you everything you can assign. What you do then is find whatever it is you want to assign to the bar, highlight it and then press the number key you want to assign it to. So if I wanted Shifta on key number 1, I would find Shifta in the list, hover over the icon for Shifta and press 1 on the keyboard. If it works, you'll see a number appear next to the icon which correlates to the number key you pressed. If it still doesn't work, check your input options (you can switch between controller and keyboard options, sometimes this can interfere with using the number key pallette). Hope that helps!

    @@SectionSkyly Really appreciate the reply, worked like a charm. Although I did first try it using control slots which put it on different number bar that i could see while holding control, but was easy to fix by redoing it using the first slots. Now my force can really pop off lol

    I need advice: I've got two other friends that are willing to play the GC version with me. We're all noobs to PSO, but way back in the day we dreamt about having broadband adapters on the 'cube and playing this. We intend to be three party only and never, ever play with randos. What would be a good party that could last through the end-game?

  • @SectionSkyly

    @SectionSkyly

    You honestly should be fine with most classes; if you want to make things easier though I'd recommend one person be a Ranger (Spread Needle/Frozen Shooter crowd control), possibly an android to make use of traps. Obviously having a Force is going to help because of the Lv30 buffs and debuffs. Third slot is flexible, you could go with a Hunter for big damage or roll another RA/FO if you wanted. Honestly though, for most areas any 3 classes will work fine if you have the right gear and know how to play them! Edit: Probably worth deciding on your Section IDs if you're not playing with randoms. You want complementary IDs that will find good gear for all 3 of you!

  • @SectionSkyly

    @SectionSkyly

    4 ай бұрын

    Unfortunately there's no way of increasing your inventory. 30 slots is the maximum for a character. If you're running out of bank space you can use other characters' storage, but as far as inventory goes you're stuck at 30 slots. Later in the game you can afford to drop some items from your inventory anyway (Monomates, Monofluids are pretty useless in later difficulties for example).

It was the first psobb server to come up on a Google search years ago, so I just went with it. I'm not that familiar with Ultima honestly, so I can only give my opinion on Ephinea. Ephinea is very close to how PSOBB was on the official servers. There are extra quality of life adjustments and some custom content but overall the game is very similar to the Sega servers. It also has a very healthy population, so well worth checking out!
