PSB Imagine Mini Revisit (2020 a revisit, kind of a review).

Hey guys, today we're revisiting the PSB Imagine Mini and for good reason. I got a ton of feedback on them when i talked about them at the end of the PSB Alpha P3 video and felt like more people needed to know about this. No associated equipment listed below as this is a revisit, not a review, and i have listened to these with many different kinds of equipment at this point. Enjoy!!!!!!

    I will be eternally grateful to you for introducing me to these speakers. I would go as far as to say that it's a far better idea if you're on a tight budget to get a pair of these and a quality amp for movies than investing in cheaper speakers just to get a center channel with surrounds and a cheap subwoofer for 5.1 audio. I've lost count of how many times I switched to 2 channel audio testing the capability of the Imagine Mini speakers to do great imaging and then completely forgot that I had the center channel the surrounds and the subwoofer switched off. It's almost like it makes no huge difference having the 5.1 setup at times.

    Have a pair of these wall mounted for some years. Now with M10 + Dirac + PSB subseries 200 = all kinds of epic. We call it the Audio Tardis. Huge sound from everywhere. 90db is effortless and I have turned the NAD M10 volume down at the top end (so it cannot go all the way up) so it doesn't vaporize your ears. Just amazing. A very neat trick from a small speaker. Binding posts make perfect sense on the dedicated mounts.

    I plan to do a video on that, in a nut shell they sound better on cheap amps compared to most speakers do but they didn't seem to improve as much as some of my other speakers did and that's a good thing in many regards as it means the speaker isn't too fussy on what you use to power it.

    if these have 6.5inch woofer how would you think if compared to buchardt s400?

  • @NemoPropaganda

    @NemoPropaganda

    4 жыл бұрын

    since they are ported if they had a 6.5" woofer they would be much larger than the S400 but it's really hard to imagine how that would impact the sound, driver integration would be totally different and it would need a new crossover for sure that would impact the sound even more. The cost would also go up a lot and that affects their value a lot. Honestly i can't really even begin to imagine what that would sound like. Now if your asking how the Imaigne Mini paired with a $1000 subwoofer would compare to the S400 without a subwoofer then the answer is the S400 is better.

  • @yamafanboy
    @yamafanboy4 жыл бұрын

    Maybe you have MB42 miccas or B652 Daytons you want to upgrade from or you just want audiophile quality accurate speakers but your budget can't exceed $300. If the imagine mini isn't perfect for you I dunno what is. Here are a few things to note if you decide to get them: 1) They almost sound like full tower speakers. The tissue box size of these are very misleading they sound massive but accurate. 2) The bass is superb rich articulate and full but it rolls off around 60 Hz so depending on your music choice you NEED a sub 3) RESET YOUR EQ!!! This speaker needs almost no DSP whatsoever and any signal processing will ruin the sound. Set your AVR to "straight" and your eq to flat.Thank me later. 4) Break them in! When you leave for work turn on some weak signal radio station and just let sound go through them for a day or more. 5) as little as 6 inches further away from the wall may change the bass impact so play with the positioning for best results 6) use ONLY LOSSLESS AUDIO for critical listening as audio source makes a HUGEEEEEE DIFFERENCE on these speakers. It can be night and day different where they sound like crap with bad source audio or like heaven with a quality source. 7) They need power. I use a yamaha AVR outputting 100W per channel and they sound amazing when a dB meter at the listening position reads between 84dB to about 86dB. They can get way louder but I wouldn't call it perfection outside of that sweet spot. That's all you really need to know but if you're not bored yet and you're new to this stuff my final point below may be worth considering. This is going to be the most difficult one to convince people cause it goes against conventional wisdom but I PROMISE you if you're just starting out with audio equipment, it will be VASTLY more rewarding to purchase a quality AVR and just a pair of these speakers EVEN IF all you do is watch movies instead of spending money on a cheap "home theater in a box" system with tiny satellite speakers and a sub of low pedigree. If you trust nothing I said so far at least take me seriously on this one. The micca "Covo-S" satellite speaker is a highly rated "home theater in a box grade" of speaker and it isn't even in the same universe as the PSB imagine mini. It's like comparing a wheelbarrow to a formula 1 car. The imagine mini is just stupidly ridiculously higher quality and better sounding in every imaginable way. I also recently purchased the SVS PB1000 and although properly calibrated the sub just ever so slightly makes up for the lacking low end in music and more significantly so in movies but the thing is honestly I could EASILY live without a sub with music while using these speakers and in some ways I regret rushing to get the SVS sub because it is outclassed by these speakers and I would sell it in a heartbeat to get something that is really in the same class as these speakers and bear in mind that the SVS PB1000 Sub probably will out perform and outclass EVERY budget sub that exists right now or comes with a "home theater in a box" system.

    Man if only those speaker terminals were normal. With my setup I pretty much move my speakers every time I listen to them (they're too much in the way if I don't). So not being able to use banana plugs is a bummer. I use Micca speaker cables. They seem like a great deal and I think they actually look quite nice with the grills off. You say you like small speakers, you should check out the NHT SuperZero 2.1 - very cheap @ $65 USD each on Amazon (MSRP $150 each). 1" silk dome - 4.5" woofer - sealed enclosure. I've heard some very good things about them. Apparently they just vanish when listening to them (there's a guy who talks about them in a KZread vid "NHT SuperZero | Owner’s Review", but there are hardly any other reviews). Certainly they need a sub. They are somewhat legendary at this point I guess, first released in the 90's and have had some revisions since. Thanks for the great vid man, keep it up.

I have run exhaustive tests and am certain that the symptoms follow the one speaker. I can still play the damaged speaker loudly with no distortion but it muffled sounding. Hi Jason I don't know what your budget is but the Imagine Mini sold for $759 back in its time which is over $1k in todays money. There is no scenario where a $349 speaker is going to beat the PSB Imagine Mini. If you love the Imagine Mini then the sound you want is mostly neutral with treble that is refined & balanced but has some snap to it, a midrange that is neutral & natural sounding with bass that is confident but not over done. Around $1000 the best option is the Heco Celan Revolution 3 and it is that same PSB Imagine Mini sound but in a larger speaker.
