PS5 VRR System Update Tested and Discussed - Is It a Game-Changer?

Ойындар

Last week, Sony enabled VRR (variable refresh rate) support on the PS5. After testing 20+ titles, John and Alex meet to compare notes, discuss the benefits of the new feature and define some of its limitations in its current form.
Note: We briefly discuss Returnal's VRR mode, but this appears to have been disabled after a recent patch - hopefully to return.

The convergence of gaming, specifically console gaming, PC monitor technology and TV technology (such as HDR) is both interesting and hilariously chaotic. I'm an enthusiast in all 3 areas but seriously it's getting ridiculous and I hope the chaos leads to more and much better Standards. This is why DF is becoming a must in the tech community. They mix it all up in the best way.

As far as TV technology goes, I’m surprised with the lack of cover on black frame insertion (BFI). The LG CX that John has/had, even has the best implementation of BFI of all of LG oled’s. Plasma tv’s have perceptibly superior motion handling compared to led and oled, and BFI tries to mimic this. 60 fps on a plasma is so clean there is literally no blur when panning left and right. For those who accept the loss in brightness, I argue using BFI can result in even smoother gameplay than VRR, if the game is already running at a stable frame rate.

It is crazy how Insomniac quickly became PS5 tech wizards after they have been acquired by Sony. Here are some of the next-gen features they have utilized: - Ray-traced reflections at 60 fps. - Instantly loading levels through the best implemention of PS5's I/O block and fast SSD we have seen so far. - Stable 40 Hz fps target for 120 Hz displays - Muscle deformation through machine learning in Spider-man Miles Morales - Closest to Pixar animation level graphics we have gotten so far with Ratchet & Clank on PS5 - Best implementation of temporal injection/supersampling on console that looks close to native resolutions - Good DualSense and 3D audio support in R&C - And now the VRR and LFC modes I think no other developer have utilized next-gen consoles THIS effectively as of now.

Well some channels on KZread actually have explained why insomniac has had trouble in the past. Typically they were heavily time crunched for each of their games in the past which is why they couldn’t do everything they wanted. I believe golden bolt and tactical bacon productions have gone over it in more detail. Basically the first game they were able to produce without heavy time limitations was R&C 2016

This isn't a coincidence . Mark Cerny, creator of the PS4 and PS5, worked at Insomniac for years and used the studio as a test case for the Playstation 5's development. If you watched the Road to PS5 event before the PS5's launch, they used Spiderman to demonstrate the PS5 load times.

The Insomniac updates are spectacular and show just how much headroom Spidey and R&C had on PS5. Up to 30fps extra in Performance RT mode. Insane given how visually impressive they are. Real coding wizardry. Now if Guerrilla could just follow suit and update Forbidden West. VRR in the insomniac games is simply transformative. I don’t think the DF content truly convey the difference, you play in Fidelity mode and is feels very close to performance. So much so I had to double check. The difference between 30 and 40-60 with VRR basically means that a new TV can transform your experience. It is also noteworthy how much performance overhead is needed for a locked frame rate.

Setting up a camera to record the screen at 240fps or higher is the closest I can think for trying to capture VRR performance metrics. It’s still easily possible, even with that setup, for the camera recording and the display being out of phase with each other, meaning having to do multiple takes or getting some seriously high end equipment to timecode sync the display and the camera. Also, until you get that far, try to always set your shutter speed or shutter angle to the quickest possible setting you can manage while still getting a good exposure. That should eliminate nearly all of the ghosting effect of recording a TV screen.

It’s nice we got some specific patches from Devs but for the rest of the titles already out on the system, we’ll see this inconsistent implementation but moving forward I’m certain every new release will have specific VRR implementation at the game level rather than relying on the system wide support.

I was looking forward to this VRR update but unfortunately it doesn’t work right with most of the games I’ve tried including games that have been patched such as Dirt 5 and Astros Playroom.. the screen either turns a yellow tint color or flickers on and off constantly. This tv is capable of freesync so I’m not sure what the problem is . It isn’t a hdmi 2.1 display. Maybe that’s the issue but like I said there’s VRR freesync in the TVs video options menu. Some TVs you have to go into the settings and change the HDMI settings for “standard” to either “Dolby vision” “VRR” or “advanced”. Its because they are using HDMI 2.1 VRR standard and not AMD Freesync. Something like a LG C9 can only do 40-120hz with gsync as it does not have freesync support. So it would be 48-120 on ps5 regardless but the newer LG's would get the benefit. The LG CX/C1 supports AMD freesync and has a VRR range of 20-120hz for both freesync/gsync thus it supports all 3 VRR standards. So that would do 20-120hz if sony did offer freesync support

Unless it’s devs like Insomniac that make great use out of VRR implementation, all devs should strive to make theirs games a rock solid 30/60fps without and drops. VRR can be great, but there is always a trade off be it large or small.

One reason why VRR is so good with Insomniac games is because they know how to make their framerate targets. Insomniac continues to lead by example and many studios need to learn to follow

I’ve noticed on Ragnarok with VRR on there is a lot of screen flickering. I imagine this is the LFC issue when the frames dip below 48? I’m on a VIZIO OLED. Not concerned about brightness issues etc, the flickering is a concern and it crazy how Sony hasn’t addressed this.
