PS4 HDMI Repair Drop Damage - Can we fix it?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video shows the repair of a PS4 console with damage to its HDMI Header on the motherboard after suffering a drop whilst plugged in. The forces from the resulting impact destroyed the port and much of the header which it connects to.
Here we replace the port and repair the circuits which became damaged during the fall to restore output and get this PlayStation back up and running once more.

    Good afternoon Andrew Paul I have seen many tutorial videos and yours are amazing because you have a way to explain and above all verify all your work I like how you do your repairs on PS4 consoles, but I would also like to know if you have tutorials on repairs of PS3 in I specify the RSX GPU chip because in my console I was suddenly set to a resolution of 1080p and now I only get one of 1080i I would like to know what is the reason why I can not visualize at 1080p resolution and tried everything to change cables, format, reset configuration to the factory of the PS3 change TV change the inputs in which I connect and watched tutorials that changing the thermal paste of the RSX or making a Reflow can be fixed but what I need to know is because if I was working well my PS3 I can not I can see 1080p the image and only 1080i that maybe the HDMI port I do not think because it does not have any false contact besides that I take care of my device never let it get dirty with dust, forgive this letter but I would like to know your opinion about it and what would be the possible cause and repair, greetings from Mexico and continue with those tutorial videos so good that you do in quality and especially in technical information.

    Hi Andrew. I was wondering if it's not too much trouble if you could help. I have a board with the diode you did a link wire to in this video and the resistor underneath it missing. I need to know which way round the diode goes and what the value of the resistor is. I don't have another board to look at and I can't find a close up pic anywhere. Any help would be much appreciated thank-you

    Hello mate is there a possibility that I could get some help? I'm having some problems with my ps4, I basically stripped it down to the mother board to take a look at the HDMI and I've put it back together and it won't turn back on? I'm guessing I've fried the motherboard but I just thought I'd get your opinion?

    Check the ribbon from the PSU is plugged into the motherboard socket and the two +12v pins are straight beneath the supply. If they're in place then It's possible that the power button tab has gotten lodged in the lid. Remove the upper lid and press the brass metal plate behind where the power button would normally be with power applied. Does it turn on?

    Many thanks. Scope is an Amscope SM-4TPZFRL. It comes with a 3MP USB camera however I have since upgraded to a HDMI camera as an aftermarket upgrade which can be seen in this video - the capture device it's plugged into and KZread encoding doesn't do the image quality justice sadly. Price to the UK by the time shipping and customs charges are accounted for were just over £850 and would probably be pushing past that now to approx £1k with the GBP to USD exchange rate being as weak as it is.

    Final question.On a day to day basis doing multiple HDMI port replacements, do you make use of the AmScope when soldering all the smaller pins to the mainboard? This is another frustration at work for me because we do not have any bench scope and instead have the magnifiers in the link below. They're fixed magnification (I think a measly 1.75x), and do not leave enough work space between the magnifier and the item you're trying to solder. Would you say the pin pitch of those HDMI pins warrants a decent scope when doing up to 4 HDMI jobs a day? goo.gl/NlvIUH

    How much do you spend on consumables, Andy? Do you think going down the retro repair and restoration is worth it too? I mean retro seems much easier to repair with the right equipment. There's a lot of collectors out there and it's nice to restore something to its former glory, but is there much money in it, we all have bills to pay. Or should I go down Apple laptops or phones in general to make the cash. I'm so undecided.

    Hi mate, thank god someone on here actually knows what they're doing! Someone's had a go at fixing my hdmi but although the soldering looks ok(ish) it still doesn't work. Looks like the resistor to the right (2k I think, next to the pin 18 diode) is either bathed in solder or missing, and there's a scratch across all the traces coming from the hdmi socket, do you reckon I'll need to wire every pin to alternate points on the board or is there an easier way. Also, how vital is said resistor?

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    7 жыл бұрын

    Correct mate it's a 2k-ohm resistor and it is indeed needed so if it's missing it'll need replacing. Check continuity of the traces which have been scored across from the pin on the port to the given location on the pin-out videos I have listed on the channel to ensure they aren't broken. If they are then you'll need to run a link wire to restore the connections, or if it's a small knick then you may be able to fill the trace with a conductive pen. If they read continuity OK then you should be fine to leave them as they are. You'd also be well advised to check each of those scored pins for continuity to ground as well as to their neighbouring pins to ensure all is good and you don't have any grounded lines or cross-interference.

I will have however a question and what use the electronic components that are between the IC and the port hdmi I speak of the small black rectangles to the numbers of 4? They are connected to the hdmi port and the ic. Can you tell me how it's called and where to find it on the net. I hope you will read my message and answer me. Thank you and continues the videos is cool.

    Hi Pascal, These are EMI Filters and their purpose is to filter any noise or interference to the video signal. I'm not sure on a part number currently (I'm working on it) but they can be had from scrap PS4 or PS3 motherboards. You can wire straight across them but ideally they need replacing. I'll hopefully be sourcing and stocking these shortly in my online store which will be coming very soon!

    Those ground plates and the heatsink effect you mention are a problem for me at work, slowing me down and making the task a bit frustrating when you have 12 jobs a day to hit. The Soldering irons at work are Tenma stations from Farnell and they're 60 watts. I think they're just rebranded Atten models. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the wattage of a soldering station what determines the response time for power (and thereby heat) to be transferred from soldering iron tip to the surfaces being soldered. As such I'm finding 75 watts is likely the minimum for a soldering iron to provide good response times when working in areas that have somewhat large 'heat sink' effects. What do you think?

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    7 жыл бұрын

    Tenma? Ouch you have my sympathy. Yep, they're pretty much a re-branded cheap generic station along the lines of Aoyue, WEP, WIP etc. I think the type of iron is probably a more important factor than wattage. For example, a Jovy iS40 is a 50W iron - but as it's a cartridge type iron the heating element and thermal regulation is an incredibly efficient and optimal design as it gets heat directly to the tip and is measured right at source where you want it. Compare this to a sleeved type iron where the temperature is measured in the handle where the heat is produced. This leads to heat draw losses as it takes time for the losses at the end of the tip to reach where the temp is measured back in the handle. You also have issues where the heat is transferred to the tip solely by the tightness of the fit of the tip sleeve over the element. Definitely not ideal - particularly if you're doing a lot of machines at any one time. I couldn't go back to a standard iron now after the Jovy. I'd love a JBC but they're a bit out of my price range ha ha! :)

    hey Andrew.. i'm wondering if you could clarify a couple of things for me.. i have a SAB-001 Motherboard. In this video you linked pin 18 to the diode, but in the other video, you showed that pin 18 should be linked to the resistor right below the diode. the other video that i'm referring to is the one where you overlay the pin locations at the end of the video.. Also, pin number 15 in the other video you pointed to the first diode to the right, but in this video, pin 15 is linked to the first resistor down.. Can you please help me with this one? Also, I noticed in this video, i noticed that you didn't link the ground pins. Is there a reason for that? thanks in advanced.

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi, Pin 18 can go to either the capacitor as per the pinout video, or the same side of the diode - whichever you prefer - I prefer the diode personally. Pin 15 - again as above those sides of the diode and resistor are common - those are simply my recommendations as to where each pin should go. As far as ground goes, there are 5 ground pins on the header - as long as at least one of the pins on the header is intact and can be soldered to then it should be fine to leave the others out if they are damaged. Hope that helps. :)

    +fixingthingz4u The difference is those are designed to have that there - The tolerance of the heat sinks call for it. These are not and will warp board and or die if left and should never be installed on a PS4.

    Actually I know of many PS4 repair technicians who will swear that the copper shim technique is over 70% more successful and long lasting than the reballing technique! Of course, all of the people who want to charge you £80 are the ones who swear by the reballing! What a coincidence!

    +Andrew Paul I am novice to soldering, and I did 2 ps4 hdmi replacement, one looked very good and worked perfectly after I changed the hdmi port,but the second was dropped in the floor and I think id damaged the board because there were 2 or 3 missing pads on the board and the hdmi connector was bent a lot, I tried to do just as you did in your video, but I don't skills anywhere near to yours, after I finished it and ran the link the wires to the board, the ps4 is turning on and shows image in the tv, but the image is not very clear, it shows some noise in the image, I dont know if the link wire I used was too thin or if I haven't done a good job in linking them, do you have a suggestion on what could be the problem? I used link wire of 0.10mm from this link www.ebay.com/itm/252962939163

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    It's likely to be that the wire isn't sufficiently soldered to the port - a dry joint or unsecure joint. Redo the connections to the rear of the port and give the wire a quick tug with a tweezer - if it stays in place you should be fine. Check the joint on the other end of the wire also.

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    7 жыл бұрын

    At the end during testing the case isn't installed on this PS4 - the mid-frame is visible at the end which is black even on the white consoles and this is what you can see. I can only presume you're a new viewer who hasn't seen much of my content - I never ever show you anything which doesn't work afterwards. As I always say, if I ever tell or show you how to do something and it doesn't work afterwards then you shouldn't listen to me. There are too many cowboys in our field to begin with without me adding to it by trying to bodge videos like that. I'm here to encourage transparency and good working practices - nothing more, nothing less. Cheers, Andy.

    I get what you mean however with fairly thick gauge wire running a bridge that short without upsetting the other end of the wire attached to the port could be a bit of a headache hence running it to the next component upstream.

    Andrew Paul I understand that. Why not just run a solder bridge? That's what I had in mind when I commented. Btw, I enjoy your videos and am glad to see someone else who knows what they are doing. There is no greater frustration seeing someone else destroy a console from inexperience. Much love from across the pond!

  • @AndrewPaul

    Yeah it's definitely a possibility, however with the 1mm dia. solder I was stuck with at the time it could have gotten a little messy with bridges to adjacent pins. Many thanks for your comment :)

    Why don't you just buy the v2 port rather than bending legs? :) I have a few horror HDMI jobs in at the moment missing pads, diodes and other small components, IC that are half soldered etc should be acceptable to charge more for previously opened consoles.

    v2 port lines up perfectly and only part of the pins that you solder are visible same as the port used in the newer revisions and the CUH-1200 Series console. Love the videos by the way.
