Idiotic "Professional" Ruins PS4 HDMI Port Repair. Can We Fix It?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video shows the repair of a badly performed HDMI Port repair on a PS4. This was amazingly sent in for a second opinion (rather worryingly!) - all that was needed here was a bit of basic inspection to see things were obviously amiss.
Anyhow we replace the port, protection diode, 2k resistor, 2x EMI filters and an Encoder IC to get this console back working again.
This was filmed a little while ago but took some editing to stitch it all together - this week was the first chance I've had to do that so it's been sat waiting for completion for a good while.

    I can't believe that someone looked at that after they finished soldering it and said "yep, that's good." Every one of those pins looks like they didn't have enough heat. The plastic damage on the ethernet port....ehhhh, shit happens. I know I've burned my fair share of plastic from collateral damage but it's always been cosmetic (that one there looks pretty fucked up though). As an amateur in training, it really upsets me when people who do work like this pass it off as professional, and even charge people for it. Ridiculous.

    Do people not know what kapton tape is? That’s it’s entire purpose, to localize your heating and prevent from damaging or accidentally melting or desoldering nearby components, and from the looks of it they didn’t know what flux is either, all of the solder joints look oxidized, kinda like they weren’t heated enough and didn’t bond to the pads

    Another day, another surgery. Great work as always. 3 of the 5 I did last week were either "I had a go at it" or "I took it to the other repair store". But....it is kinda nice, sometimes, to have to do more than just change the port. I like the hunt...unless I am backed up on repairs :) Keep at it Andrew!

    In fact people see the top level of modern electronics being repaired in front of their eyes and the most of them thinking how easy are these kind of repairs that can be done by everyone.But no one can do these except a few well skilled with proper equipment,much experience and even in some cases quite luck if all things go well and nothing bad is happened.

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    6 жыл бұрын

    It definitely looks easier than it is - that said much of the time though if decent equipment is invested in then it can make even the most ham-fisted amongst us look capable in this field. The problem comes when you only want to repair your own machine which makes that investment a waste of money and people try and use cheap equipment which is what then gets them into trouble. Even then though it's still cost them more than it would to simply get it repaired for them - but as this channel shows even that isn't a safe bet sometimes. I think it's about time the consumer electronics repair profession required some accreditation so that the public could be sure that the people repairing their machines are in-fact competent professionals which might cut down the number of badly repaired or damaged machines out in the wild and stop this 'race to the bottom' mentality amongst the cowboys out there who devalue our profession, work and levels of skills involved. Sadly won't happen though.

    Great video man, love your videos very educational and entertaining. I always have said two is better than one, two hdmi ports in case one breaks. Also if they could do a design of hdmi ports that could attach would be easy replace, but that is just an idea only.

    Andrew Paul how about USB port? Is that cheaper, could they make a video output from a USB similar design, would that be cheaper, also USB seem to be more durable, and they could possibly do two

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    7 жыл бұрын

    USB 3.0 is quick enough (after all you can buy USB 3.0 docking stations for laptops with multi-DVI / HDMI output support) - the only issue is needing to implement the chipset to give that functionality would be very expensive and complex from a design / manufacture point of view compared to a dedicated HDMI circuit.

  • @frankynakamoto2308

    @frankynakamoto2308

    Andrew Paul very interesting. Yes I understand because the chipset is made for HDMI the chipset wouldn't work for this. Is there a way to update the chipset? I mean through softmod or updating the console? The only think I can think of, is if they would need to make the chipset to be smarter and also have updates to recognize if the video is working on tv, but then it would be on a newer console eventually.

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    7 жыл бұрын

    Sadly not - it's a physical design issue within the Silicon so you'd need a whole new chipset and custom implementation on the board (basically a complete revision of the mainboard) to implement.

    Do you happen to have any information on the components under side of the board of the HDMI connector on a SAC-001 board? As I'm learning as I go, I have noticed a few boards I have replaced ports on I have also lost a few small components down there, rendering video output non-existent and I'm hoping to revive these boards.

    15:12 - I'm curious as to why you fit the port that way, rather than clearing out the holes, then fitting and soldering in with an iron. Is there any advantage doing it one way or another?

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    6 жыл бұрын

    V2 ports line up with the header perfectly so by using the solder in the locating holes you can stick the port directly in, get it flat to the board and you have something there to instantly anchor the port into place while you go about getting the I/O pins installed. It's a time saver and makes your life easier IMO. I used to clear the holes but as above it's much easier to leave them filled for me at least but different people will have differing preferences.

    Flux is a paste or liquid which aids tinning and wetting of solder joints - in other words it helps it to flow easier and helps create a better quality solder joint. It's essential for an easier repair experience and a better quality job.

    Please reply Andrew Paul, I have a Xbox one black version that soda got spilled in it from the side which the fan is on. it played for about 20 mins then went off. i let it dryed a day then it worked for 10 mins then it went back off. i took it apart 3 times so far. the first time i took it apart without removing the heat sync with the fan on it. i cleaned it with water i acutally ran water over it to remove the liquid soda. i let it completely dry. put it together then the light came on then completely went off the brick when to white orange white then orange. i took it to my friends house to hook it up to his. brick it did the same thing his xbox came on. so i ruled out the brick. took it apart again but this time i did a complete break down remove everything even the heat sync. below it was the ACU with thermal compound paste still on it. i clean around it with alcohol and q tips were the soda spilled on it i , also check to make sure nothing was burnt or USB proms was bent touching. everything looked normal. almost looked brand new i kept the thermal paste on it cause i have none to use. i put it together and it now beeps but wont turn on it will make a eject sound but nothing happens. what should i do. i have no warranty to send it i would like to try and fix it my self. should i remove thermal paste and reheated it with a heat gun then has some new one. idk what to do at this point the 3rd time time i just took it apart just to double check everything still same thing

    Small 2-pin closest the port on left side with port facing you? That's a protection diode - stripe needs to face left - if orientation is wrong you'll likely get no video. Check each pin for continuity to its neighbour with a multi-meter for shorts. Remove any found with some braid and flux. Finally give each pin a nudge test with a tweezer blade and look for movement - this is much, much easier with some magnification if you have some. Any loose pins need re-soldering. Otherwise you may well have a dead Encoder IC - was the original port damaged at all in any way before replacement?

    As long as the stripe is left when the port is closest to you then you're good to go (Pin 15 diode). If so then it's likely a failed Encoder IC - particularly if the old port was free of damage.

    and 71.5 ohms... i dont know what kind of meter... but to jump without a physical short... if EMI filter was shorted between coils... should be near 0 ohms, or a few ohms... just like before... id guess some solder inbetween the pads... because to cause a spark gap of 71ohms still doesnt make sense for solder ... to me itd be the hdmi chip is bad... maybe was the flux? gunk thats on there... possibly water from the isopropyl alcohol ... otherwise itd be the chip or gunk... shorted filter should be zero left to right... or maybe 0-6 ohms for both coils.... but eh... id blame the gunk... wet resistance... 71 doesnt make sense for a shorted coil... itd make more sense... that being cooked they go open ... but idk... just what i know... may have broken the As you stated previous flux they used, could be cheap crap with petroleum in it... causing wet shorts...

    @noth606

    Dorian Golej that would be one helluva unusable kind of flux if it gave 70ohm, that's damn near a short. Nah, I suspect that the show started with encoder ic going pear shaped, monkey comes in and changes working hdmi port and shorts several pins, shorted pins FUBAR the coils via the encoder that's done for anyway when they plug it in to some shitty monitor/TV and that's where it landed on this video. I've used a ton of different flux and tested a lot sometimes even with it still damp, and it's never shorted anything, not saying it's impossible but it's extremely improbable in my experience.

  • @Antassium

    He uses 490°c but mine maxes out at 480°c and works fine as well. It's more important that you get leaded solder in there to lower melting temperatures.

    Sounds like a hand-shaking issue. I'd test it using a different HDMI lead and failing that on another TV and see if you can replicate the issue before doing anything too drastic.

    That would suggest a HDMI port issue - the pins like to separate and push out which will cause things like intermittent picture / handshaking issues etc. Once it starts it will get worse to the point the connection on one or more pins breaks completely and you'll be left with no image. Might be worth getting it checked out if it's not something you fancy tackling yourself.

    I wonder if those filters can be attached with magnets, so they can just be place there with magnets sticking.

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    Not really - the magnets would introduce interference in the signal.

    Andrew Paul I think that is a myth, you should try it to verify if this would be legit, most of what humans think is actually wrong, just like how nuclear and atomic bombs are a lie because not scientifically possible

    Andrew Paul they once told me that cell phones were affected by magnetic interference, so I gave it a try, I had several big magnets the size of my hand at home, so I made a few calls with the magnets attached to the cell phone, I had no problem whatsoever, none, the phone still working and it didn't hurt or damage it in anyway, I was skeptical about the screen being damage, but no damage occur to it, because on older CRT screens were affected if you put a magnet there, but then once you took the magnet out the tv screen will slowly recover from the magnetized, as it reestablished, somehow the screens in cell phone work differently so magnets doNOT affect cell phones in any way, not even on signals is just a myth a fake idea humans have, just like cell phones would interfere airplanes is also a myth not true.

    The air plane / cell phone thing is mainly due to potential *theoretical* interference with the Avionics but those are incredibly well shielded anyway and on modern jet liners you can even use your cell phone in-flight as everything has been designed to provide that as an extra convenience for business passengers etc. Digital signals like HDMI / USB etc are very susceptible to interference due to their nature. Any interference to the signal however slight (certainly with USB) will result in the data packets becoming corrupt and rejected by the host controller. That's why when the EMI filters go slightly out of spec you can lose functionality via USB or HDMI as on the PS4. It's particularly an issue with things like laptops where they can get water ingress etc due to spills / outdoor usage etc as the liquid will come through the port and into the localised area behind where these filters reside.

    I don't think a pro did this. Whoever did this did not have proper tools/knowledge , and as most of the jobs these shops do is replacing charging connectors, failing on this simple task means they will close shop before they open it. Probably the owner of PS4 tried to do it himself.

    Andrew Paul hey, would I be able to replace my HDMI port without a heat gun and just an iron and flux?

  • @AndrewPaul

    @AndrewPaul

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Aaron, No I wouldn't think so - you need to heat-soak the board in order to get the ground pins out whilst at the same time reflowing the 19 pins soldered to the header to get the port to safely drop out without damage. You won't get enough heat into the board with an iron or be able to reflow all the joints together to get it to come free. Hot air definitely a requirement in this instance.

    Andrew Paul thanks for your help, I was just trying to find the fastest, most effective replacement even if there is damages after the fact, as long as it works. I do see what you’re saying about how you need to heat both the pins and the mounting port at the same time for it to fall out, you just won’t be able to heat enough surface area with just an iron.

    100% If the hdmi port pin (s) break USE SOLDER WIRE. cut a pin sized piece and place it in the port. YOU MIGHT HAVE TO WIGGLE HDMI CABLE TO SET PIN IN RIGHT. WORKS 100%
