PS3 Super Slim - Full Disassembly & Service

Here, I unwittingly explore the weird construction that is the PS3 Super Slim.
From the hard-to-remove PSU, to the large heatsink/frame, this model has a good few design quirks that left me more confused than before picking up my screwdrivers.
Tools used -
Phillips screwdriver
Torx Security (T8) screwdriver
Prying tool (a guitar pick can be used as well)
Microfibre cloth
Brake cleaner (I recommend 100% isopropyl alcohol)
Tissues or something to remove thermal compound
Thermal compound (I used some Cooler Master stuff)
Disclaimer - This is not a definitive guide to disassembling a PS3. Please search for other sources to get a full understanding of this feat. I am not held responsible with any damage and/or injury caused if you wish to follow this video and other sources.

    I know this is a late comment, but when you apply thermal paste you don't want to spread it everywhere because it will automatically do that when you tighten down the heatsink over the cpu. If you spread it everywhere, you risk it squeezing out everywhere.

    Ahhh I'm never doing that again! It worked, but damn it was a massive pain in the butt. Getting the front plastic panel back on is a nightmare, I just have to accept that mine isn't going to be snapped in fully. Also the ps3 was very clean inside considering it's been running for nearly 10 years. The thermal paste was nearly all gone though. I hope I can get a few more years out of it. By then PS3 emulation should have advanced further. Great video though!

  • @TheBuddingEngineer

    @TheBuddingEngineer

    4 жыл бұрын

    This might be a bit hard to explain, but the left side of the front cover is latched across (like the rear cover), while the other side just clips directly in because of a tab for one of the Torx screws. So you need to slightly bend the cover and latch in the left side, then push down the rest. Admittedly, I've had a bit of trouble as well, but forgot to put it in the video. Hope this helps.

    The blue ribbons is what was the issue for me. That and the occasional dust infestation xp. I guess every time I slide my disc tray shut (I broke the automatic release a long time ago) the tiny blue ribbon on the back slides out? And when I disassemble it I unknowingly unlatch the big blue ribbon too, which may cause the clicking sounds but no disc reading. So, thanks for this video.

    @@XenoTronusWeePoo850There could be a few reasons I'd check if it's the right size - if the bit doesn't fit perfectly into the screw, you'll have to press harder than usual and risk rounding it off In the case that's happening, I'd get a small screwdriver set that'll cover most cases, and preferrably with a curved, grippy handle You use the wide part of these handles to get the torque to unscrew, something you can't do with screwdrivers that have narrow, metal knurled handles. I found them to be miserable Just remember to not over-tighten screws when putting things back together - I use the narrow part of the curved handle instead and screw wrist-tight
