Here's How Sony Made The PS3 Smaller

Ойындар

The PS3 went through several revisions since it released back in 2006, but the most drastic change came when Sony announced the PS3 Slim. This revision changed everything about the system inside moving to an entirely new layout and fabrication for the Cell Processor. Today we'll take a look inside the first generation Slim to see what they did to make it happen.

The 3000 slim model have some differences (based on my model, 3000A NTSC-J): - Disc (Blu-ray) drive now use ribbon cables - Most components are changed (not the same model), though layout still the same - RSX and Cell are smaller in size (as far as I remember its between 40 and 30 something nanometers) - Any type of CFW is not compatible, only PS3HEN - Reduced power consumption and reduced PSU wattage (around 200 instead of 250ish) - Heatsink (and cooling solutions) are slightly different, although works the same

Earlier this year my friend gave away his overheating PS3 slim. The overheating was pretty bad, 30 minutes of playing and it turns off. I took it apart, changed the thermal paste between the heat spreader and the heat sink. It helped slightly, I could play as long as I need, but the fan was roaring, driving everyone mad. I took it apart again, the new thermal paste was already dry after a few months of work! Checked the KZread, learned that you need to remove the heat spreaders and changed the thermal paste underneath. So I did, but instead of using thermal paste, I’ve applied gallium. Unfortunately you can only use it between the chips and the heat spreaders, because the heat sink is made of aluminum and gallium will corrode it. Now it works so silent, I can hardly hear the fan under the full load.

PS3 Slim 2001 is the very best because you can install full Rebug. My baby was just sitting gathering dust until PS3Xploit came out a few years ago and luckily I did not update it for a long time. So now it has a 500 GB SSD filled with titles and I cleaned the insides and applied new paste. Interestingly enough my PS3 Slim is 11 years old but the paste underneath the IHS is fine. I only applied paste on top of the heat spreader and I used MX4 compound. My temps are 55 Celsius on both CPU and GPU. I wonder if my Slim is a unicorn? I hear a lot of people say they get bad temps without delidding. I only cleaned it and applied new paste once in 11 years because the fan was slightly louder and now it is almost completely silent.

I've been reading up on all models, and I'm probably gonna end up getting the super slim despite its dull loader. Turns out all super slims (and some specific normal slims, hard to differentiate those on used market tho) got rid of the NEC Tokin capacitors. Used to own a fatty and it YLOD'ed most likely due to those capacitors

Bought my slim in june of 2010. Its been shipped to alaska and back, dropped on a hardwood floor twice, and has hundreds of thousands of hours of playtime on it and its still running strong today. Ive even gone through 2 controllers since ive had it. Played it so much the joysticks wore out. A beast of a system.

I guess, based only on rumours of how it's constructed, they went for a very unusual approach on cooling and, because of that, it had to be SO BIG. A PS5 Slim will most probably have a different cooling solution. How about being discless only? The disc drive version was clearly an afterthought, considering the design.

That's a DYN-001 motherboard, they have a 45nm Cell and 65nm RSX, after that revision they had 4 more board revisions for the ps3 slim, i have the JSD-001 board, sony shrinked the wifi module, moved the 5v rail connector to the PSU (rendering any previews PSU incompatible with the latest ps3 slim revisions), changed the cpu and gpu vcore caps from tantalum to aluminium polymer and the RSX was moved to a 40nm die and (as a dick move lol) they moved the BD connector to be undernead of the unit, it is really difficult to re attach but at the same time stopped the use of a popular BD emulator board that was been used to play BD iso files, then on the next board they changed the hdmi port to a cheaper one with the same pinout and arrangement but less support/ground pins, i noticed because i have to change my hdmi controller ic and port, component level repairs are possible on the ps3 but getting the exact parts is kind of difficult sometimes.

Modelnumber is the CECHP04 wich is the last revision of the Phat before the move to the Slim so both the Cell Cpu and the RSX are on 65nm and it has the coolest and least Wattage Powersupply with plastic instead of metal housing from al of the phats wattage config: 140/252/256 Also I have put in the 19 Blade fan and extended the metal fan bracket holes for more airflow, also I have put in the better heatsink for the RSX from the older models instead of the less finned Aluminium one and I have replaced ALL of the NEC/TOKIN Caps with new high quality ones and I have both the CELL and RSX Delidded and using Noctua NT-H1 Thermal compound under and above the IHS and it runs CFW with the fan defaulted on the higher RPM payload and have made some holes with a dustfilter below the fan and have slightly raised the feet so it sits higher and I clean it out once a year it will probably one of the longest surviving Phats out there! (P.S No it doesn’t have Ps2 hardware but with its CFW can run most ps2 games decent)
