PS22 Chorus "Jóga" by Björk

Coming to you live from PS22, here's yet another amazing accomplishment from a first rehearsal. Yes, I am VERY proud to say that the kids learned this song in one sitting, and it is one of my favorite things I've ever heard on them. I really planned on working on the bounty of new material we've bitten off, but during rehearsal I could tell the kids were fiending for still another new song. So I looked over my iPod and came up with this song by Bjork called "Joga" off the album Homogenic.
This is one of my 3 or 4 favorite Bjork songs and man oh man, the kids on this!! Just brilliant. I can't believe how polished this sounds after learning it only today. I'm so happy about this one.

this is why i always say we need to stop dumbing kids down and start treating and acknowledging them as fellow humans. seeing these kids sing such a mature and mystical song and be able to portray it in such a beautiful way means that they are capable of emotionally comprehending what the song's nature is. beautiful.

Love seeing brown kids exposed to Bjork. I was 12 when I discovered Bjork in the 90s. An urban skaterboard chick and loved rap rock metal and so many genres of music that none around me listened to at the time. Hope this gave them the same spark I had to seek out music I had never heard before. ❤

When I was younger I struggled a lot in school. I had to transfer to a different, very shitty school where fights and bullying were daily occurances. I had no friends but in my class there was a black girl who also had no friends. She was smartly dressed, I was more alternative. During classes or homework hours we used to listen to eachothers music whilst sharing earbuds. She introduced me to a whole new world of african (ethiopian, which she was) and rnb music and I introduced her to rock and 60’s/70’s music. Im still so grateful for her. She told me about the meanings of the songs and what they meant to her personally, it was such a wonderful human connection to make. I wonder how she’s doing now.

I was a brown kid listening to Bjork in the 90s . We were listening in the 90s... I'm glad that brown kids nowadays are listening too... Because there has been a massive drop off and musical diversity for kids of color tbh. Back then we had the Wu-Tang clan shouting out Bjork in music...Sinead O'Connor shouting out Public Enemy and 2 live Crew... Diverse music and people really connected while respecting each other's differences then. It wasn't a homogenized thing where one really takes over and pretends to represent all. Thanks capitalism
