There’s also the Dot of Death error. In the menu the light orbs won’t move but turn into one single dot and stay that way without move. This happens when the CMOS internal battery is dead.

@@Isafell2001 Its actually bc the CMOS battery is dead, and thats where the date and time data is stored on the BIOS, you can actually get an new one and replace it and its gonna be back once again

I think I have an explanation for the "DVD Player is not set up" message. In very early PS2 consoles (like the first ones released in Japan, SCPH-10000 and I believe the SCPH-15000 also had this problem), the DVD playback capability didn't come from the factory, on the consoles themselves, given the PS2's rushed release. What Sony did instead was providing a disc in the box, that would allow to install said capability onto a Memory Card, taking advantage of the PS2's ability to read updates from MCs (the same ability that would be exploited by FMCB years later, and no, not having a MC wouldn't be an issue in this case, since the first Japanese models came with one), thus allowing for DVDs to be played. Knowing this, we can safely assume the error message shows up when the user inserts a DVD without having that installed. Later Japanese models and ofc, the ones released in other regions came with DVD playback built-in, so this error message was rendered obsolete. As to why it showed up to this user with FMCB, that I don't know, but I'm not aware of any similar issues for other people.

Fun fact, very early production run PS2s had slightly unreliable disc drives. I had an early production PS2. So yeah it wasn't uncommon for me to see the RSOD even on brand new games and DVDs.

The error sounds were really scary but man, They really made you feel closer to the console. The really gotta bring the back.

This red screen actually felt pretty chill to me as a kid. It didn’t have any sudden sounds, the colors weren’t harsh, and it even said “please” in a very polite tone. But I *did* scream whenever the Wii did that little “blppp bong” sound when there was no disc inserted

Some kids that were born years after us think that the Xbox 360 red ring of death is scary. Sure, it represents the fact that your beloved Xbox is dead and you can't use it. But the scare comes from the possible loss beforehand, not from the ring itself. The PS2 screen, on the other hand, it's a different story. You're not looking at some tiny red ring of death. You're staring at a big fucking gaping hole of red. It may not be as meaningful as the red ring of death, but it does give you nightmares.

Ok, so let me set the scene... It’s 2007. Little 4-year-old me is sitting in my room at 10pm with the lights off playing the PS2. I decide to change the disc and put Crazy Taxi (epic game) into the console. I reset it, climb up my bunk bed and sit down to play. Then the RSOD fades in. My parents come bursting through the door and scream “What’s wrong, Sam?!!!” I burst into tears, run into my mums arms and say something about the PS2 wanting to kill me as my dad sorts out the disc. I didn’t sleep in my room for about a week afterwards. The sound still gives me chills to this day... but the very same PS2 is still set up in my room and has been in the same place for around 12 years. I still love it though, even if it did scare me shitless 😂

I remember I was a kid when I wanted to play God Of War (in my room), then that RSOD appeared I slept in my parents' room or hall for a year LMAO

This brings back so many memories, specially the RSOD, I always found the ps2 menu sounds relaxing, they make me sleepy (except the RSOD of course, it produces deep anxiety)

They were all pretty, and the RSOD brings back so much good memories because my fav disc was so scratched it was normal for me.

R.S.O.D. is called Red Screen Of Death. But in my own version. It is: Really Scared Of Dreams So. You're Really Scared of Dreams because of the RSOD

my playstation 2 have black screen of death. It stucks black screen and nothing

I remember when I was 5 or 6, I skuck out of bed to play the ps2 in our living room. And I remember being curious and wanting to play a PC game on the ps2. When I popped it in, and booted it up, I nearly shat myself seeing the red screen of death, aswell as the volume being loud from when it was used before. It was terrifying as all hell

I did that too when I didn't had a PC. I remember when my mom buy me my cinnamon toast crunch and came with a football game for PC and I decided to play it on my PS2 and that was the first time I saw the Red screen of death.

I still have my PlayStation 2 and it still works.

One thing I noticed that the Cube on the RSOD screen moves differently depending on what console you have. You can also tell on the PS2 startup screen when the middle cube moves in a certain direction.

What adapter/configuration did you use to set up the PS2 like this? Wanted to play my old PS2 for a while but not sure what adaptors/connectors to use.

It sure is just hearing the PS2 sound go from hello gamer to why have you done that? In an angry voice

I know of at least three more errors the PS2 has: 1. "Disc read error." - Appears on the browser screen when the system cannot read the disc. Usually due to a faulty laser and possibly accompanied with loud clicking noises from the disc drive. 2. "Disc cannot be played due to regional restrictions." - Happens when you insert an out-of-region DVD video disc into the console, for example a Region 1 disc in a European Region 2 console. 3. Blinking red light - The console shuts off and this appears when the console has overheated. Usually due to a faulty or blocked fan.

@@YuvrajK.Official You have to try pretty hard for a PS2 to overheat - usually only a failed fan does this, even then it will run for upwards of 20mins before it shuts off. Heard of blocked Slim fans causing this too.

My GTA San Andreas disc got scratched two times. After the first one that got scratched, I bought another one but after a while, it got scratched again because one of my little siblings knocked my PS2 over which caused it to open. Now, I have my third one, I hope it doesn't get ruined.

I remember I used to have this scratched up copy of the game and it would occasionally give me a message saying the game was scratched and I thought if I put my hand neat the reset button it would work again, usually did.

The red screen of death can also happen to heavily scratched ps2 discs even if it's the right region, it happened to me when I tried to play my old copy of Finding Nemo on the ps2 recently

This shot my heart. The nostalgia is real.

I always had nightmares of this screens and sounds when I had my PS2. I used to call it “the cubes.” I remember one dream where Lego Star Wars froze and just kept looping the same sound from the cantina over and over as my PS2 started smoking, and I’m at my doorway and my mom stands up from my bed and starts walking towards me groaning like a zombie or like she’s in pain and I can’t move. One of the earliest nightmares I remember

0:46 - Something similar happens on my modded SCPH-9002 system when I put a Blue disc CD-based PS2 game in the console, although this time it would sound like it’s running a PS1 disc but will show that screen instead of the actual one.

I love error series! Make it more please! :D

RSOD can actually also appear by inserting badly scratched disc too ( i had this problem oftenly, man, i was always just thinking to just launch the game without RSOD )

Yeah, many people got RSOD by inserting badly scratched disc, many people knew about that but in video it wasn't mentioned so i just needed to writte it here. I personally had it too, and well, i saw it pretty much. For example, an really badly Gran Turismo 4 Disc, it had some big scratch that looked like infinity symbol. I don't remember when i get that screen for the first time, because i saw it pretty much.

I think it's because the scratches are so bad that the console simply doesn't recognize it as a proper format disc, I don't believe it's explicitly due to scratched discs inherently, and I don't think Sony really considered that this would be a problem, as the screen is clearly meant specifically for discs that are recognizable as improper format, in which case creating such an eerie error screen like this would make a lot more sense for the purpose of something like burned discs instead of just simply a disc that was unreadable, which has an error message of its own, much more simple and harmless. Personally though, I can say that this definitely was a problem that I myself have experienced, and Sony didn't seem to have really put much thought into this message before releasing the PS2, and never got to fixing it since I'm pretty sure this is a problem on all models, either way the PS2 wasn't too great at differentiating simple, scratched discs from improper format, which definitely led to the scarring of many children (myself included,) but what are you gonna do?

Yep, i need to admit, i had also nightmares because of RSOD, lol. You actually sayed it right, it seems that it looks like it, PS2 just thinks it's different disc and gives RSOD. RSOD actually would be great at making pirates scared when trying to pirate a game. Also, by saying burned discs you mean 'arrrr'?

The version of RSOD where the console can boot the disc then shows the screen, actually happened to me and my friend with his Slim PS2.

I'm in the USA, many times have I seen "Disc read error" (instead of "The disc could not be read") thanks to scratched discs, and when the old thing eventually kicked the bucket and wouldn't read anything. I only saw the red screen once ever, because I put in a disc that was literally dirty. I washed the disc with water (probably a stupid idea) and that fixed it.

I used to scare watching rsod when i kids, thanks to this channel im not scared anymore and watch this as amusing entertainment

Am I the only one who owned a PS2 as a kid and felt like the start up was just pressing random stuff until the game started? I remember seeing every single screen here, but not understanding anything until now.

Imagine the boxes on the RSOD are corrupted save data, like if only one game's save data was corrupted, you would only see one square.
